Online Ambassador
Hello! After sitting around for a while, your application to be an Online Ambassador has been accepted. Please read the welcome message and any of the linked pages you are unfamiliar with, and complete the tasks listed there. There is a list of classes needing OAs here, which you should look at once you're done with the introductory material. Let me know if you have any questions, and welcome! Nikkimaria (talk) 02:04, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Hey, I'm mostly on the Canadian side of the program too. Most of the Canadian courses seem set in terms of ambassador support - this one and this one might need help. The second of those ran last semester also, and needed much more support than it had, unfortunately. The US classes on the list linked above have been identified as needing support, or you could browse through Wikipedia:United_States_Education_Program/Courses/Present to see if any catch your eye. You sign the MOU once you find a class to support. The process and timeline will depend very much on the course(s) that you get involved with. Nikkimaria (talk) 23:33, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
- You're responsible for registering yourself for the classes you'd like to support. The U of T psych course is a good choice. Carleton and Mount Royal look like they're set (and Western will be shortly - we're currently talking to the prof about that one). Of the other possibilities you mentioned, "Cognition - George Fox", "The Social Web - Carnegie Mellon", and "Introduction to Mass Communication - Southern Indiana" are in most need of help, although not really in your preferred areas. Nikkimaria (talk) 23:49, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
Hiya, I just was wondering if you would be available to support another class as an online ambassador. I am the campus ambassador for an arts and ethics course at Georgetown University in DC. There are 4 grad students who will be working on individual articles for the Wikipedia US Education Project. Most have little to no experience with Wikipedia. I'm in the process of setting up the course page and can link you to it when I'm done. Let me know! Cdl32 (talk) 18:00, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
Hi there! Thanks for getting back to me. It's a small class (4 people) and ages vary. Even if you're younger, I know they will definitely appreciate your help! I think most will need a bit of help refining their topics so if you could offer guidance on that, that would be fantastic. I'll send you a follow up email tomorrow with more info on the class so you have some context. If you don't mind, I'll also contact the professor and instruct any students to post to your talk wall if they have any questions. Let me know if there is any information or help that you need from me. Thanks again! Cdl32 (talk) 05:06, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
Hi there again! Apologies on the delay in response. You have been added as the online ambassador for the Arts and Ethics course taught at Georgetown. I'm sending an email to students to post on your wall regarding topics and any questions they might have for you. Cdl32 (talk) 18:19, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
Hi, I received your message. Which space would you prefer the students and myself to post questions and comments to you? Just let me know what space would be the best for you and I'll let them know as soon as possible so that you can archive your current talk page. Thanks again! Cdl32 (talk) 05:43, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
Arts & Ethics
Hey, Christina Lee just sent us your contact info as our Online Ambassador for this class, so I wanted to start the conversation about my topic. I'm looking to expand the article for Online exhibition. You can check out my sandbox for my initial research/ideas (all very preliminary thoughts and just keeping track of potential sources). I'm planning on building out the article with the following topics: What It Is (how it works, different approaches, early adopters, etc), Advantages of Online Exhibitions (including expanded audience/access to exhibits, and an overview of how archiving objects in this format can be useful for insurance purposes), Emerging Issues Related to Online Exhibits (including things like IPR/distribution/licensing, foreign export, funding issues, the open nature of the internet and the potential for misuse of available exhibits, etc).
I'm afraid this approach might be difficult with the need for a neutral point of view. I'm hoping that perhaps by framing it as "benefits incentivizing museums/archives/libraries to use online exhibitions" and "potential problems which are preventing the ubiquitous adoption of online exhibitions" will be ok? What do you think? Thanks! --Azmcsbl (talk) 20:33, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
Hi! I'm in the same class as Azmcsbl above. Can you take a look at my draft article for a new topic on the Budapest Museum Quarter. I'd appreciate your feedback! Thanks. Rskovach (talk) 15:27, 6 March 2012 (UTC) Thanks so much for the suggestions, they all make sense! I'll make the changes and try to add a bit more before finalizing. Online Ambassador, Spring 2012
Hi, AstroHurricane001! As you may know, the Wikipedia Education Program has instilled a new set of standards that courses must meet to officially join the program for the semester. As you can see, one of the requirements is that at least one ambassador or professor is a Wikipedian, as this should give students more access to helpful information about contributing to Wikipedia and creating good content. You are listed on the Online Ambassador page; are you still interested in remaining active this semester? Some of these classes will have to remove themselves from the program should they fail to meet these standards, but we would like to ensure that new students are receiving proper support during the editing process. Please let me know if you are still interested in mentoring these students this semester and/or visit the Online Ambassador talk page to select a course that still needs an Online Ambassador. Thank you! JMathewson (WMF) (talk) 19:20, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
- AH1, I've added you to the Southern Indiana course you expressed interest in (the other course is actually not participating this semester--I haven't moved the course page yet). It looks like GuillaumeTell has also signed up to be an OA for Professor Tew's course. Please do post on the professor's talk page, and I will also make sure the Regional Ambassador contacts you about the course. Thanks for signing up!
- If you are still interested in supporting another class, the list of courses that need an OA are right here. As for the Cairo pilot, I'm not sure what kind of OA support is still needed, but you can post on Annie Lin's talk page if you're interested in getting more information. A kitten for you!
Thank you for signing on to my Introduction to Mass Communication course as our Online Ambassador! We're involved in documenting the importance of journalists who have died while reporting or as a result of their reporting. We want to make this information available to raise public awareness about news safety and educate an international audience in support of world press freedom. The students have all been assigned journalists who meet these requirements for the most part. My hope is that we all do great things together! I'll tell the students you're on board.

Re:WikiCup
Hi- there are a few things that the judges need to smooth out before it's judged who is through to the next round, so all hope is not yet lost. As I'm sure you realise, the GA review would not typically count, but I would be willing to take a look at it and see if an exception could be made. If you link me to the article, I'll take a look.
- If an ITN is nominated, and then pulled for article quality reasons, can a user score 10 points for bringing the article back up to par, leading the entry to be re-posted on ITN? Interesting question. I'd say, in principle, yes. If you did significant work on the article and it was thanks to that work that the hook was featurable, then you are probably eligible for points. I'll check the specific instance if you like.
- Can a participant score 2 points for a GAN review when another user decided to ask for a second opinion, or while another user is either reviewing or has put the article on hold... No. Only reviews for which you are the primary reviewer count. Providing a second opinion is, of course, highly valuable and can be very time-consuming, but it does not count for points.
- ...- and does the GAN have to pass in order to score points? Nope, it just has to be closed. A GAN that ultimately results in the article being failed, as long as it is sufficiently detailed (as in, not just something like "This article is completely unsourced, and the lead needs to be expanded. See WP:RS and WP:LEAD. As such, the article is being quick-failed."), is still perfectly eligible.
- Will future scoring opportunities be available for submitting an entry to the Spoken Wikipedia to include the article in that program? That's not ever been discussed. It's something that you could raise later in the year when we enter our "Do the rules work?" period; perhaps sometime around September-October. Keep and eye on the newsletter.
There have been attempts at creating a kind of sub-WikiCup for those eliminated to continue participation, but they have sadly fallen through. In earlier years, the judges also had their own scores, just for the sake of comparison. I'm not at all adverse to the idea in principle, but it's a little late to start something central now. Thanks! Do contact me if you add anything else to your submission page for this round, as I believe the bot may dormant in the interim. J Milburn (talk) 13:51, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry to rush you, but please get in contact with me ASAP if you're feeling that there's something else you are going to claim. J Milburn (talk) 20:11, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
WikiCup round 2
Hi- this is a message to let you know that you are one of six people tied for 64th place in the WikiCup, and so have a chance to make it to round 2- see Wikipedia talk:WikiCup#Tiebreaker for details. Please reply there. Thanks! J Milburn (talk) 22:32, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
WikiCup 2012 February newsletter
Round 1 is already over! The 64 highest scorers have progressed to round 2. Our highest scorer was
Grapple X (submissions), again thanks mostly to a swathe of good articles on The X-Files. In second place was
Tigerboy1966 (submissions), thanks an impressive list of did you knows about racehorses. Both scored over 400 points. Following behind with over 300 points were
Ruby2010 (submissions),
Cwmhiraeth (submissions),
Miyagawa (submissions) and
Casliber (submissions). February also saw the competition's first featured list: List of colleges and universities in North Dakota, from
Ruby2010 (submissions). At the other end of the scale, 11 points was enough to secure a place in this round, and some contestants with 10 points made it into the round on a tiebreaker. This is higher than the 8 points that were needed last year, but lower than the 20 points required the year before. The number of points required to progress to round 3 will be significantly higher.
The remaining contestants have been split into 8 pools of 8, named A through H. Round two will finish in two months time on 28 April, when the two highest scorers in each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers, will progress to round 3. The pools were entirely random, so while some pools may end up being more competitive than others, this is by chance rather than design.
The judges would like to point out two quick rules reminders. First, any content promoted during the interim period (that is, on or after 27 February) is eligible for points in round 2. Second, any content worked on significantly this year is eligible for points if promoted in this round. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which would otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! You may have noticed over the past few days that the MOTD that you link to on your user page has simply displayed a red link. Adopt a journalist project
AH1, My students are back from spring break and will be starting their sandbox page and drafting this week. I'm giving them the go ahead if they've done their research and listed their citatations on their user page. I'm instructing them to go to our course page, click on the red link for their person, and choose "special:mypage..." to create their page. You'll be listed as one of their contacts if they should need help. In a week or so, the students will be getting to the point where they should be able to submit. Could you review some of these to tell students if they are ready to submit to AFC? Thank you, Crtew (talk) 17:41, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for the note! I definitely want my students to submit their own entry to an editor who will accept or kick it back. Will the process as designed above lead to that review? I had my students go through the wizard last time, but honestly I had several students who couldn't follow the steps (with one who tried to edit the front page of Wikipedia until getting kicked off). I thought the approach that I described may be easier, but I think you're suggesting that it may not give me what I want. It won't have the content wizard's default template at the top. I would appreciate your advice. Crtew (talk) 21:57, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Help
Mvwold created an entry "Death of Jamal Al-Sharaabi" and directly published it instead of saving it to her sandbox. One person was on the case very quickly and wants to merge it with another article. I'm sure she did this by accident, but is it too late for her to move it back? One time, I created something and moved it immediately back but nobody had contributed anything. Last year, a student published her story directly and had all kinds of people getting involved in the entry. It was a disaster for the student although it was a blessing from a Wikipedian mindset. Students, who are not yet attuned to Wikipedia, are not used to this kind of interactive writing experience. What to do? Thanks, Crtew (talk) 02:33, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 March newsletter
We are over half way through the second round of this year's WikiCup and things are going well!
Grapple X (submissions), of Pool B, is our highest overall scorer thanks to his prolific writings on television and film. In second place is Pool H's
Cwmhiraeth (submissions), thanks primarily to work on biological articles, especially in marine biology and herpetology. Third place goes to Pool E's
Casliber (submissions), who also writes primarily on biology (including ornithology and botany) and has already submitted two featured articles this round. Of the 63 contestants remaining, 15 (just under a quarter) have over 100 points this round. However, 25 are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly. 32 contestants, the top two from each pool and the 16 next-highest scorers, will advance to round 3.
Congratulations to
Matthewedwards (submissions), whose impressive File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg became the competition's first featured picture. Also, congratulations to
12george1 (submissions), who claimed good topic points, our first contestant this year to do so, for his work on Wikipedia:Featured topics/1982 Atlantic hurricane season. This leaves featured topics and featured portals as the only sources of points not yet utilised. However, as recent statistics from
Miyagawa (submissions) show, no source has yet been utilised this competition to the same extent it has been previously!
It has been observed that the backlogs at good article candidates are building up again. While the points for good article reviews will be remaining constant, any help that can be offered keeping the backlog down would be appreciated. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. WikiCup 2012 April newsletter
Round 2 of this year's WikiCup is over, and so we are down to our final 32, in what could be called our quarter-finals. The two highest scorers from each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers overall, have entered round 3, while 30 participants have been eliminated. Pool B's
Grapple X (submissions) remains our top scorer with over 700 points; he continues to gain high numbers of points for his good articles on The X-Files, but also Millennium and other subjects. He has also gained points for a good topic, a featured list, multiple good article reviews and several did you knows. Pool E's
Casliber (submissions) was second, thanks primarily to his biology articles, with Pool H's
Muboshgu (submissions) coming in third, with an impressive 46 did you knows, mostly on the subject of baseball. Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both scored over 600 points. Pools E and H proved our most successful, with each seeing 5 members qualify for round 3, while Pools C and D were the least, with each seeing only 3 reach round 3. However, it was Pool G which saw the lowest scoring, with a little under 400 points combined; Pool H, the highest scoring group, saw over triple that score.
65 points was the lowest qualifying score for round 3; significantly higher than the 11 required to enter round 2, and also higher than the 41 required to reach round 3 last year. However, in 2010, 100 points were needed to secure a place in round 3. 16 will progress to round 4. In round 3, 150 points was the 16th highest score, though, statistically, people tend to up their game a little in later rounds. Last year, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 points were needed. Guessing how many points will be required is not easy. We still have not seen any featured portals or topics this year, but, on the subject of less common content types, a small correction needs to be made to the previous newsletter: File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg, our first featured picture, was the work of both
Matthewedwards (submissions) and
Grandiose (submissions), the latter of whom has also gone on to score with File:Map of the Battle of Guam, 1944.svg. Bonus points also continue to roll in; this round,
Ealdgyth (submissions) earned triple points for her good articles on William the Conqueror and the Middle Ages, Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both earned triple points for their work on Western Jackdaw, now a good article,
Dana Boomer (submissions) earned triple points for her work on lettuce and work by
Stone (submissions) to ready antimony for good article status earned him triple points.
Jarry1250 (submissions) managed to expand Vitus Bering far enough for a did you know, which was also worth triple points. All of these highly important topics featured on 50 or more Wikipedias at the start of the year.
An article on the WikiCup in the Wikimedia Blog, "Improving Wikipedia with friendly competition", was posted at the end of April. This may be of interest to those who are signed up to this newsletter, as well as serving as another way to draw attention to our project. Also, we would again like to thank
Jarry1250 (submissions) and
Stone (submissions), for continued help behind the scenes. Can you help me with this
The articles are going through review and one student recieved a WP:Victim and WP:1E. My student was basing her notability on WP:SIGCOV. I explained the reasoning here on the reviewer's talk page. But I'm really interested in how to shift the weight in these decisions to WP:SIGCOV. Your thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks, Crtew (talk) 21:14, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
