Washington Gladden Social Justice Park

Hi Abductive,

Can you let me know what you mean by "Five digit decimal coordinates cannot resolve on Wikidata, online mapping services"? I haven't had problems, and don't know how this changes anything - can you let me know more about why you altered this? Thanks, ɱ (talk) 00:57, 20 January 2021 (UTC)

@: It's not going to cause problems for you, it's just that Wikidata uses D°M'S" and can't correctly round things that are in decimal format, unless it is one those rare instances where D.dddd° or D.dddddd° happen to exactly work out. For example, 48.9375° N is exactly 48° 56′ 15″ N. In the future, there is a plan to draw coordinates from Wikidata to display in Wikipedia articles. So if the 5 digit coordinates are put into Wikidata, they get converted to D°M'S" but with many extra digits at the end of the arcseconds (D°M'S.ssss...."). If brought back to Wikipedia, they will look inelegant and be overprecise. If you click random articles, you will note that most articles are in D°M'S", quite a few are in D.dddddd° (which is too precise), and some are in D.dddd°. D°M'S" and D.dddd° are roughly congruent in a couple of ways; first, they contain the same number of digits, and second, they are roughly at the same level of precision–about where the mapping services are. The mapping services do not agree down to D°M'S.s", take for example York City War Memorial. If you look at the Google and Bing satellite views, one or the other misses the memorial given the same coords. So it is best practice to use D°M'S" or D.dddd° whenever possible. Abductive (reasoning) 04:24, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
I don't fully understand all that you're saying, like the conversions, and why Wikidata needs different standards/conversions than Wikipedia. Nevertheless, I have found five to six digits necessary to adequately pinpoint places, especially when using {{mapframe}} maps in the articles. Using your "underprecise" coords could mean the pinpoint is far off center for a large shape, or totally missing the target for a smaller one, like a monument or statue. I will continue to use "overprecise" coords as needed to make mapframe maps accurately pinpoint the objects in the articles about them. ɱ (talk) 04:48, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
As an aside, it's odd that both Geohack and Google Maps present "D.dddddd°" as an option, but I need to edit each of these, slowing down article creation and making it needlessly complicated for beginners. Any technically accepted format should be acceptable. ɱ (talk) 04:48, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
@: If you find that you must use 5 and 6 digits, you can force a D°M'S" display by adding |format=dms in the Coord template, which sends the 5 and 6 digit coords to the maps when readers click on them. Abductive (reasoning) 04:54, 20 January 2021 (UTC)

Allium iranicum moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Allium iranicum, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. Single source is not for this species.(?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Prunus subhirtella

KEEP IT CIVIL. I was only editing this article because one of your edits broke a reference; which I have now restored. Prunus crassifolium

Hi. Could you take a look at this please? The comments made by the IP appear to bear out that this should not be redirected as is. I went to create the article, then realized that it should be a redirect, just not to Prunus africana, as it is not listed as a synonym under that species. It appears that Pygeum crassifolium, not "Prunus" is a synonym for Prunus crassifolia. So not sure this redirect should stand. I've marked the page "reviewed" for now, so that you could see the comments by the other editor. But as you know, taxonomy is something you're much more familiar with. Not sure how to fix it, or even if I'm correct in assuming that it should be fixed. Is there another source which shows that this is indeed a synonym for africana? Thanks. Onel5969 TT me 13:34, 22 February 2021 (UTC)

I put a band-aid on it. Btw, Pygeum is a synonym for Prunus. Abductive (reasoning) 14:32, 22 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. Figured you'd know what to do. Onel5969 TT me 15:36, 22 February 2021 (UTC)

WikiCup 2021 March newsletter

Round 1 of the competition has finished; it was a high-scoring round with 21 contestants scoring more than 100 points. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 55 contestants qualifying. You will need to finish among the top thirty-two contestants in Round 2 if you are to qualify for Round 3. Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  •   Epicgenius led the field with a featured article, nine good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 945 points.
  •   Bloom6132 was close behind with 896 points, largely gained from 71 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  •   ImaginesTigers, who has been editing Wikipedia for less than a year, was in third place with 711 points, much helped by bringing League of Legends to featured article status, exemplifying how bonus points can boost a contestant's score.
  •   Amakuru came next with 708 points, Kigali being another featured article that scored maximum bonus points.
  •   Ktin, new to the WikiCup, was in fifth place with 523 points, garnered from 15 DYKs and 34 "In the news" items.
  •   The Rambling Man scored 511 points, many from featured article candidate reviews and from football related DYKs.
  •   Gog the Mild, last year's runner-up, came next with 498 points, from a featured article and numerous featured article candidate reviews.
  •   Hog Farm, at 452, scored for a featured article, four good articles and a number of reviews.
  •   Le Panini, another newcomer to the WikiCup, scored 438 for a featured article and three good articles.
  •   Lee Vilenski, last year's champion, scored 332 points, from a featured article and various other sport-related topics.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. In Round 1, contestants achieved eight featured articles, three featured lists and one featured picture, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. They completed 97 good article reviews, nearly double the 52 good articles they claimed. Contestants also claimed for 135 featured article and featured list candidate reviews. There is no longer a requirement to mention your WikiCup participation when undertaking these reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or something else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 (talk) and Cwmhiraeth (talk). Coordinates

Hi — I noticed your comment on Villa Tammekann, saying "Five-digit decimal coordinates cannot resolve on Wikidata (or anywhere else), and missed the building." I'm really curious to know more, can you explain what you meant (or point me to where I can read about this)? I often wonder how many digits is the 'right' number, and as I don't know, I just take a guess... clearly didn't get it right this time. Thanks, --DoubleGrazing (talk) 07:07, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

  •   The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
  •   Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  •   Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  •   Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
  •   Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
  •   Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.
  •   Sammi Brie, with 485 points from four good articles, eight good article reviews and 27 DYKs, on US radio and television stations.
  •   Ktin, with 436 points from four good articles, seven DYKs and 11 "In the news" items.

Please remember that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of Round 2 but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in Round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (except for at the end of each round, when you must claim them before the cut-off date/time). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Smell training

You asked WT:MED to investigate this article, and they have. We did not find the therapy to be a "joke" as you put it, and it very much looks like Doty is a lone critic. Please stop adding your own views or the views of a single doctor into this article as though they have any weight vs entire learned societies comprising dozens of experts. -- Colin°Talk 14:43, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

Btw, you can't "double blind" smell training. There are quite a few therapies for which double blind studies cannot be performed. There are aspects of the study that could be blinded, and improved in various ways, but complaining that the studies aren't "double blinded" is just silly. There are no double-blind trials of wearing spectacles for myopia, for example. -- Colin°Talk 14:46, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

Can't WP:V the change to Xanthium strumarium

This addition, apparently copy+pasted from some definitive text, includes what appear to be inline citations but there's nothing in the article to indicate which definitive text that was or what those inline references might be. Familiar to a botanist, perhaps, but I'm not a botanist and can't WP:VERIFY the sourcing. Can you add the supporting references? Yappy2bhere (talk) 19:08, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

@Yappy2bhere: The synonym_ref = field was above the cited material, sorry. It is the ref for the whole list of synonyms.Abductive (reasoning) 20:04, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

revised Parasyrphus nigritarsus page

Greetings,

I noticed that you rated the Parasyrphus nigritarsus page a year ago. I made lots of changes and added reference to that page. I think it is ready for a re evaluation. Not sure that this is the right way to suggest this, but if you are interested in reading about this interesting fly, I would be happy that you had a second look. — Preceding unsigned comment added by NCalBeetleGuy (talkcontribs) 16:59, 2 July 2021 (UTC)

Edit desc on Fort Concho

I thought I'd let you know that I found your edit description here insulting. It is not a "supposed" FA. It has been recognized by the community as a Featured Article and got support from that same community to appear on the main page as an example of our finest work. The coordinates pointing to the elementary school is an honest mistake and I should have checked that, but you should have been civil in your edit summary. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 07:47, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

Bare URLs

Hi Abductive

It was good to see you feeding Citation bot with the categories of articles with bare urls. Those from May and June 2021 arose from a mass-tagging exercise by me, and I had meant to get around to feeding some of them to the bot. Thanks for doing that.

However, all of those I tagged in June, and some of those I tagged in May, use the inline tag. I was asked to use it for cosmetic reasons, so I did, but unfortunately neither reFill 2 nor Citation bot will fix bare URLs tagged with {{Bare URL inline}}.

So there is no point feeding that set to Citation bot until I have done a bot job to convert the tags, which will require a BRFA. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 11:34, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

I don't want to get into having a meatpuppet, so thanks, but no: it's best if editors run their own jobs. Having a meatpuppet would amount to me gaming the bot's limits on jobs per user.
And while I am sure that your offer was well-intended, it reaffirms my view that your goal is to be an editor who feeds big jobs to the bot, rather than someone trying to resolve actual problems.
Anyway, if you won't revert your chopping up of my post, I will revert. But I would prefer that you do it. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:36, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
@BrownHairedGirl: Purge the page... Those limits exist for only one reason; to prevent people from experiencing 50x errors. A joint effort to clear bare urls would not be meatpuppetry, but a worthwhile collaboration. Post a list of 2200 to my sandbox. Abductive (reasoning) 23:41, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
Not sure what the "purge" comment is referring to.
And sorry, but I do regard your proposal as meatpuppetry, for the reasons set out above. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs)
@BrownHairedGirl: Purge the Citation bot talk page, and you will see that I removed my interpolating. You could tell me your method for detecting bare urls. Abductive (reasoning) 23:47, 31 July 2021 (UTC)

Category:CS1 errors: bare URL

Hi Abductive

As a followup to my post[2] at User talk:Citation_bot#Job_requests, I thought I would try to offer some practical assistance on testing the bot's effectiveness in cleaning up Category:CS1 errors: bare URL, so here it is.

I chose a sample size of 200 pages, because it is big enough to be statistically meaningful, but also small enough to not be a significant burden on the bot. I made the sample using a few tools, with the pages picked at random using shuf.

I have taken the liberty of creating in your user space a sample of 200 randomly-selected pages from Category:CS1 errors: bare URL, at User:Abductive/CS1 errors: bare URL. (If that is an unacceptable intrusion, please accept my apologies. Just let me know and I will immediately tag it for speedy deletion per WP:G7).

I have also created two Petscan queries:

  1. https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=19792358 checks which of those pages remains in Category:CS1 errors: bare URL.
  2. https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=19792372 checks which of those pages is NOT in Category:CS1 errors: bare URL.

If you are already familiar with Petscan, then again, sorry for the intrusion.

I would test this by running that sample through the bot 2 or 3 times, using Petscan before and after each run to monitor progress.

I hope this helps you to assess the significance of what may turn out to be a productive use of the bot in cleaning up the big set of citation errors which you identified. If it's not helpful, then I am sorry for intruding. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 03:32, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

Interesting. So there is a possibility that the bot takes more than 2 passes to fix everything? Abductive (reasoning) 14:47, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
Yes. AFAICS, the bot nearly always has some issues with database lookups etc, so in my experience it keeps on finding stuff after multiple passes as each pass may have access to different databases. However, the returns get lower each time, because the set with remaining problems will include some pages which the bot can never fix (e.g. refs with dead links or links to PDFs), so as the fixable issues are resolved, the list becomes more and more concentrated on the never-fixable issues and those which need the least-available databases.
With the difft set of bare URLs that I am working on, I usually get a 30% success rate on the first pass. I have done a few second passes, which get about 10% success, and one of these days I will try a third pass. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:43, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

Please do not run Citation bot in Template space

Please see this erroneous edit, which has been reverted. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:15, 16 August 2021 (UTC)
