2. The highways comprising the State Highway System as set forth in 1 above are more specifically designated and set forth as follows, to-wit:

  • 1. Mississippi 1 — Begins at Onward thence in a westerly direction to Fitler, thence in a northerly direction to Mayersville, thence continues from Mississippi 14 approximately mid-way between Mayersville and Rolling Fork to or near Greenville, Rosedale and Sherard, and ends at or near Clarksdale. This route includes the business route north of Greenville [MS 814], a spur at Glen Allen [MS 436?], and a spur south of Fitler to the Warren-Issaquena county line; thence in a southerly direction by way of Brunswick and Eagle Lake to Highway 61 at a point approximately 6 miles north of Vicksburg [MS 465], and a link of road beginning at or near Lula in Coahoma County on U. S. Highway 61 and running thence in a southwesterly direction to connect with Mississippi Highway No. 1 at or near Sherard [MS 323]. [amended 1960]
  • 2. U. S. 61 — Begins at the Mississippi-Louisiana state line south of Woodville and extends in a northerly direction to or near Woodville, Natchez, Fayette, Port Gibson, Vicksburg, Rolling Fork, Leland, Cleveland, Clarksdale and Tunica and ends at the Mississippi-Tennesee[sic] state line north of Lake View. This route includes connections to Anguilla [MS 824], Duncan [MS 444?] and Alligator [MS 802] with a business route connecting U. S. 82 and U. S. 61 in Leland [MS ?].
  • 3. U. S. 49W — Begins at or near Yazoo City and extends in a northerly direction to or near Belzoni, Indianola and Ruleville and ends at or near Tutwiler. This route includes connections to Drew [MS 820], Ruleville [MS 812], Doddsville [MS 832], Sunflower [MS 810] and Inverness [MS 816].
  • 4. Mississippi [301] — Begins at or near Savage and extends in a northeasterly direction to or near Arkabutla, thence north to Cub Lake, Eudora and Lynchburg and ends at the Mississippi-Tennessee state line. [amended 1962?, 1964??]
  • 5. U. S. 49 — Begins at or near Clarksdale and extends in a southeasterly direction to or near Tutwiler, thence continues from or near Yazoo City to or near Jackson, Mendenhall, Collins, Hattiesburg and Wiggins and ends at or near Gulfport. This route includes a business loop through Bentonia [MS 830] and a connecting section of old U. S. 49 north of and in North Hattiesburg [MS 967] and a spur of old U. S. 49 south of Hattiesburg [MS 969].
  • 6. U. S. 49E — Begins at or near Yazoo City and extends in a northerly direction to or near Tchula and Greenwood and ends at or near Tutwiler. This route includes a connection to Sumner [MS 728].
  • 7. U. S. 51 — Begins at the Mississippi-Louisiana state line at or near Osyka and extends in a northerly direction to or near Magnolia, McComb, Summit, Brookhaven, Hazlehurst, Crystal Springs, Jackson, Canton, Durant, Winona, Grenada, Batesville, Senatobia and Hernando and ends at the Mississippi-Tennessee state line north of Horn Lake. This route includes a business loop through Crystal Springs [MS 844].
  • 8. Mississippi 35 — Begins at the Mississippi-Louisiana state line south of Sandy Hook and extends in a northerly direction to a point on Miss. 24 at or near Foxworth, thence continues from or near Columbia to or near Bassfield, Lone Star, Mount Olive, Mize, Raleigh, Forest, Carthage, Kosciusko, Vaiden, Carrollton, Holcomb, Charleston and Batesville and ends at or near the Sardis Dam northeast of Batesville. This route includes connections at Homewood [MS 892], Harpersville [MS 882] and Walnut Grove [MS 878] and a loop through Burns [MS 902]. This route also includes a section of road beginning at a point on U. S. 84 south of Hot Coffee and extending in a northerly direction to or near Taylorsville, Center Ridge and ending at a point on Highway 35 south of Raleigh [MS 37]. [amended 1956]
  • 9. Mississippi 13 — Begins at a point on Highway 16 west of Carthage at or near Pine Tree and extends in a southerly direction to or near Lena, Morton, Polkville, Daniel, Puckett, Mendenhall, Prentiss and Columbia, thence continues in a southeasterly direction to or near Lumberton and ends at a point on U. S. 49 at or near Maxie. This route includes a spur to Roosevelt State Park [MS 888], and a spur from Forkville to Ludlow [MS 483].
  • 10. Mississippi 15 — Begins at the Mississippi-Tennessee State line north of Walnut and extends in a southerly direction to or near Ripley, New Albany, Pontotoc, Houston, Mathiston, Ackerman, Louisville, Philadelphia, Newton, Bay Springs, Laurel, Beaumont and Lucedale and ends at the Mississippi-Alabama state line southeast of Lucedale. This route includes a connection with Mississippi 12 in Ackerman [MS ?], a loop in Mantee [MS 782] and spurs to Algoma [MS 344] and Ingomar [MS 762], and a spur beginning on Highway 15 just south of the Jasper-Jones county line and running northeast about one and one-half miles to Mossville [MS 537].
  • 11. U. S. 45 — Begins at the Mississippi-Tennessee state line north of Corinth and extends in a southerly direction to or near Corinth, Booneville, Tupelo, Shannon, Nettleton, Aberdeen, Columbus, Brooksville, Macon, Scooba, Meridian, Quitman, Waynesboro and ends at the Mississippi-Alabama State line at or near the town of State Line. This route includes connections at Wheeler [MS ?], Guntown [MS 348], Nettleton [MS 774], State Line [MS 42?] and Porterville [MS 498].
  • 12. Mississippi 39 — Begins at or near Meridian and extends in a northerly direction to or near DeKalb and ends on U. S. 45 at or near Shuqualak.
  • 13. Mississippi 45W — Begins at a point on U. S. 45 at or near Shannon and extends in a southerly direction to or near Okolona, West Point, and ends at a point on U. S. 45 at or near Brooksville. This road includes connections at Artesia [MS 788] and Brooksville [MS 852].
  • 14. Mississippi 7 — Begins on U. S. 49W at or near Belzoni and extends in a northeasterly direction to or near Swiftown to U. S. 82 north of Itta Bena, thence continues from or near Greenwood to or near Holcomb, Grenada, Coffeeville, Water Valley, Oxford and Holly Springs to the Mississippi-Tennessee state line northeast of Michigan City. This route includes a connection to the University of Mississippi [MS ?] and a spur to Hudsonville [MS 313].
  • 15. Mississippi 3 — Begins at a point on U. S. 61 at or near Redwood and extends in a northeasterly direction to or near Satartia and Yazoo City, thence follows U. S. 49W to or near Inverness, thence in a northeasterly direction to Moorhead, thence north to Sunflower, thence continues along U. S. 49W to Tutwiler, thence in a northeasterly direction to Lambert, Marks, Sledge, Crenshaw, Sarah and Savage to intersect U. S. 61 at or near Lake Cormorant.
  • 16. Mississippi 17 — Begins on U. S. 82 at or near Carrollton, thence in a southerly direction to Lexington, Pickens, thence in a southeasterly direction to a point on Mississippi 16 at or near Farmhaven.
  • 17. Mississippi 2 — Begins at or near Hickory Flat and extends in a northeasterly direction to or near Blue Mountain, thence continues from or near Ripley to or near Kossuth and Corinth and ends at the Mississippi-Tennessee state line northeast of Corinth en route to Shiloh National Military Park.
  • 18. Mississippi 19 — Begins on U. S. 51 at or near West and extends in a southeasterly direction to or near Kosciusko, Zama, Arlington High School, Yates Crossing, Philadelphia and Meridian, and ends at the Mississippi-Alabama state line southeast of Meridian.
  • 19. U. S. 72 — Begins at the Mississippi-Tennessee state line northwest of Mt. Pleasant in Marshall County and extends in a southeasterly direction to or near Walnut, Corinth and Iuka and ends at the Mississippi-Alabama state line southeast of Iuka. This route includes a spur connection to Corinth to commence immediately east of the GM&O overhead bridge south of Corinth and connects with South Fillmore Street [MS 785]. This route also includes a spur connction to Glen [MS 779].
  • 20. Mississippi 6 — Begins at a point on the Mississippi-Alabama state line east of Gattman, thence runs west to Amory, Bigbee, Nettleton, to or near Plantersville, to or near East Tupelo, thence in a northwesterly direction to Tupelo, Pontotoc, Oxford, Batesville, Marks, to or near Clarksdale, thence in a northwesterly direction to or near Friars Point, or the proposed location of the Arkansas-Mississippi River Bridge.
  • 21. Mississippi 8 — Begins at or near Rosedale and extends in an easterly direction to or near Cleveland, Ruleville, Minter City, Philipp and Holcomb, thence continues from or near Grenada to or near Calhoun City, Houston and Aberdeen and ends on Mississippi 6 at or near Greenwood Springs. This route includes a spur from Mississippi 8 west of Grenada to Grenada [MS ?], and a connection to Pace [MS 817].
  • 22. U. S. 82 — Begins at the Mississippi River Bridge southwest to Greenville and extends in a northeasterly direction to or near Greenville, thence east to or near Leland, Indianola, Greenwood, Carrollton, Winona, Mathiston and Starkville to a point on U. S. 45 west of Columbus, thence continues from or near Columbus to the Mississippi-Alabama state line east of Columbus. This route includes a connection with Mississippi 15 at Maben [MS 763].
  • 23. U. S. 78 — Begins at the Mississippi-Tennessee state line northwest of Olive Branch and extends in a southeasterly direction to or near Holly Springs, New Albany, Tupelo and Fulton and ends at the Mississippi-Alabama state line east of Fulton. This route includes a business loop in Hickory Flat [MS 705].
  • 24. Mississippi 30 — Begins at or near Oxford and extends in a northeasterly direction to or near New Albany thence by Keownsville and Pleasant Ridge thence to a point at or near Wheeler to intersect U. S. 45 thence along U. S. 45 to or near Booneville, thence to Walden's Store, Hills Chapel, Burton, and ends at or near Tishomingo.
  • 25. Mississippi 12 — Beginning on Mississippi Highway 1 at or near Ferriday Store, thence continuing through LeRoy Percy State Park and extends in an easterly direction to or near Hollandale, Belzoni, Tchula, Lexington, Durant, Kosciusko and Ackerman to a point on U. S. 82 northeast of Mississippi State College, thence continues from or near Columbus and extends in a northeasterly direction to the Mississippi-Alabama state line. This route includes business loops through Kosciusko [MS 735], Ethel [MS 425? 739?], Weir [MS 407/413], Ackerman [MS 759] and a connection to McCool [MS 411?].
  • 26. Mississippi 14 — Begins at or near Mayersville and extends in an easterly direction to or near Rolling Fork, thence continues from U. S. 61 at or near Anguilla to U. S. 49W at or near Louise, thence continues from a point on the Benton-Lexington road north of Zeiglerville to or near Goodman, thence continues from or near Kosciusko to or near Louisville and Macon and ends at the Mississippi-Alabama state line east of Macon.
  • 27. Mississippi 16 — Begins on Mississippi Highway 1 at or near the Issaquena-Washington county line, thence in a southeasterly direction to Rolling Fork and extends in a southeasterly direction to or near Holly Bluff, thence continues in a northeasterly direction to U. S. 49-W at or near Craig, thence continues from or near Yazoo City to or near Benton to U. S. 51 at or near Canton, thence continues from or near Canton to or near Carthage, Philadelphia, DeKalb, and Scooba to the Mississippi-Alabama state line east of Scooba. [amended 1962?]
  • 28. U. S. 80 — Begins at or near Vicksburg and extends in an easterly direction to or near Jackson, Brandon, Forest, Newton and Meridian and ends at the Mississippi-Alabama state line east of Meridian.
  • 29. Mississippi 20 — Begins at or near Natchez and extends in a northerly direction to or near Pine Ridge, thence continues from or near Church Hill to or near Fayette. Hazlehurst, Pinola, Magee and Taylorsville and ends on U. S. 84 west of Laurel.
  • 30. U. S. 84 — Begins at the Mississippi River Bridge at or near Natchez and extends in an easterly direction to U. S. 61 in Natchez, thence continues jointly with U. S. 61 to or near Washington, thence continues from U. S. 61 at or near Washington, to or near Meadville, Brookhaven, Monticello, Prentiss, Collins, Laurel and Waynesboro to the Mississippi-Alabama state line east of Tokio.
  • 31. Mississippi 44 — Begins at or near Bude and extends in a southeasterly direction to or near Summit thence continues from or near McComb to or near Pricedale and Jayess to Mississippi 27 east of Jayess thence continues from or near Columbia to or near Sumrall and ends on U. S. 49 north of Hattiesburg. This route includes a spur to Meadville [MS 556].
  • 32. Mississippi 24 — Begins at or near Fort Adams and extends in an easterly direction to or near Woodville, Centerville, Gloster, Liberty, McComb, Tylertown, Columbia and Hattiesburg, thence continues from U. S. 49 south of Hattiesburg to or near New Augusta, Beaumont and Leakesville, thence follows Mississippi 63 approximately four miles in a southeasterly direction, thence continues in a southeasterly direction to the Mississippi-Alabama state line to connect with the Leakesville-Citronelle road. This road includes spurs in Centerville [MS 946], Gloster [MS 911] and Hattiesburg [MS ?].
  • 33. Mississippi 48 — Begins at or near Centerville and extends to Liberty, thence continues from Mississippi 24 west of McComb and extends in a southeasterly direction to or near Magnolia, Tylertown and Dexter, thence continuing in a southeasterly direction to intersect with Highway 13W at Sandy Hook.
  • 34. Mississippi 26 — Begins at the Mississippi-Louisiana state line east of Bogalusa and extends in an easterly direction to or near Poplarville and Wiggins and ends at or near Lucedale.
  • 35. U. S. 90 — Begins at the Mississippi-Louisiana state line southwest of Pearlington and extends in an easterly direction to or near Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, Pascagoula and Moss Point and ends at the Mississippi-Alabama state line enroute to Mobile, Alabama.
  • 36. Mississippi 63 — Begins at or near Moss Point and extends in a northerly direction to or near Lucedale and Leakesville and ends at or near Waynesboro. This includes a spur from Hataway's Store about 10 miles south of Lucedale running in an easterly direction to the Mississippi-Alabama state line [MS 612].
  • 37. Mississippi 43 — Begins at a point on U. S. 90 approximately fourteen miles west of Bay St. Louis and extends in a northerly direction to U. S. 11 south of Picayune, thence continues from or near Picayune to Mississippi 26 at or near Cross Roads, thence continues from or near Silver Creek and extends to or near New Hebron, Pinola, and Mendenhall, thence continues from or near Puckett, to Cross Roads, to Pelahatchie and extends to or near Pisgah, to Mississippi 16 at or near Canton, thence continues from or near Thomastown, and extends to or near Kosciusko to or near Shady Grove and Friendship and ends at or near Kilmichael. This includes a spur approximately 4½ miles running southeasterly from Picayune [MS 602].
  • 38. Mississippi [604] — Begins on U. S. 90 at or near the Mississippi-Louisiana state line and extends in a northeasterly direction to the Picayune-Bay St. Louis road near Westonia.
  • 39. Mississippi 53 — Begins at or near Poplarville and extends in a southeasterly direction to or near Necaise and ends at or near Lyman.
  • 40. Mississippi [603] — Begins at or near Bay St. Louis thence to Kiln and extends in a northerly direction to or near Necaise.
  • 41. Mississippi 55 — Begins at or near Saucier and extends in a southeasterly direction to or near Biloxi.
  • 42. Mississippi 57 — Begins on Mississippi 55 at or near Biloxi and extends in a northerly direction to or near Ramsey Springs and ends on Mississippi 26 east of Wiggins.
  • 43. Mississippi 59 — Begins at or near Fontainebleau and extends in a northerly direction to or near Van Cleave, Benndale and Avent and ends on Mississippi 15 at or near McLain.
  • 44. Mississippi 29 — Begins at or near Wiggins and extends in a northerly direction to or near Janice, New Augusta, Runnelstown and Ellisville and ends on U. S. 84 west of Laurel. [extended 1958]
  • 45. Mississippi [563] — Begins on U. S. 61 approximately three miles north of Woodville, thence to Wilkinson in a northeasterly direction to or near Crosby.
  • 46. Mississippi 33 — Begins at or near Fayette, thence to a point at or near McNair thence to a point near Roxie, thence in a southerly direction to Knoxville to Crosby to Gloster, thence to Centerville, thence south to the Mississippi-Louisiana state line.
  • 47. Mississippi [551] — Begins at or near Natchez and extends in a southeasterly direction approximately six miles.
  • 48. Mississippi [568] — Begins at the Mississippi-Louisiana state line in Amite County and extends in a northeasterly direction to or near Gillsburg and ends on U. S. 51 south of Magnolia.
  • 49. Mississippi [570] — Begins at or near Smithdale in Amite County and extends in a southeasterly direction to or near McComb.
  • 50. Mississippi [554] — Begins at or near Natchez and extends northeast to or near Pine Ridge and ends on U. S. 61 at or near Selma.
  • 51. Mississippi [553] — Begins on U. S. 61 at or near Stanton in Adams County and extends in a northerly direction to or near Church Hill, thence in an easterly direction to Fayette, thence in a northeasterly direction to Harriston.
  • 52. Mississippi [552] — Begins on the Port Gibson-Alcorn College road north of Alcorn College and extends south to Alcorn College, thence southeast to or near Lorman.
  • 53. Mississippi [550] — Begins on Mississippi 20 at or near Union Church and extends southeast to or near Brookhaven.
  • 54. Mississippi [547] — Begins at or near Port Gibson and extends southeast via Pattison to or near Allen.
  • 55. Mississippi 27 — Begins at or near Vicksburg and extends in a southeasterly direction to or near Utica, Crystal Springs, Georgetown, Monticello, Tylertown, and ends at the Mississippi-Louisiana state line south of Tylertown.
  • 56. Mississippi [461] — Begins at or near Vicksburg and extends south to or near Grange Hall.
  • 57. Mississippi [?] — Begins at or near Clinton and extends east to the west corporate line of Jackson. [deleted 1956]
  • 58. Mississippi [476] — Begins at or near Van Winkle and extends east to the west corporate line of Jackson.
  • 59. Mississippi [467] — Begins at or near Edwards and extends southeast to or near Raymond.
  • 60. Mississippi [469] — Begins on Highway 20 at or near Fork Church thence north to Harrisville to Florence, and extends northeast to the Whitfield-Brandon road at or near Brandon.
  • 61. Mississippi [468] — Begins three miles north of U. S. 80 on the Fannin Road, thence south to U. S. 80, thence in a southeasterly direction to Whitfield, and thence in a northeasterly direction to or near Brandon.
  • 62. Mississippi [427] — Begins at or near Edinburg and extends in a southerly direction to or near Laurel Hill.
  • 63. Mississippi 18 — Begins at or near Port Gibson and extends in a northeasterly direction to or near Hermanville, Utica and Raymond to an intersection with U. S. 51 at or near Jackson, and a spur approximately five miles south of Raymond to Oakley [MS ?], thence from Brandon continues in a southeasterly direction to or near Raleigh and Bay Springs, thence continues in a northeasterly direction to or near Rose Hill, thence southeast to or near Pachuta, thence east to or near Quitman and ends at the Mississippi-Alabama state line east of Quitman. This route includes a spur from Pachuta to the Clarke-Jasper county line [MS 512].
  • 64. Mississippi [471] — Begins at or near Brandon and extends in a northerly direction to or near Fannin, thence north to intersect the Sand Hill-Canton road about four miles west of Sand Hill.
  • 65. Mississippi [481] — Begins approximately 7 miles southeast of Pisgah, and extends east to the Rankin-Scott county line to Morton, Pulaski, Trenton, Burns and intersecting Highway 35.
  • 66. Mississippi [606?] — Begins on the beach front in Hancock County, Mississippi, at the intersection of Engman Avenue with the beach highway and runs thence along the beach front in a southerly direction to the intersection of Lake Shore Highway, which said Lake Shore Highway connects with Highway 90.
  • 67. Mississippi [587] — Begins at Monticello, Mississippi, at U. S. 84 and runs south at Robinwood, Tilton, Whitebluff, Morgantown, and connects with Highway 24 at Foxworth, Mississippi.
  • 68. Mississippi [311] — Begins on U. S. 72 at or near Mt. Pleasant and extends southeast to Mississippi 7 at or near Holly Springs.
  • 69. Mississippi [541] — Begins on U. S. 84 at or near Mt. Carmel and extends in a northerly direction to or near Magee, Upton, Gunn, to intersect Mississippi 13 approximately four miles northeast of Puckett. [amended 1958]
  • 70. Mississippi [589/590] — Begins at a point on U. S. 11 at or near Ellisville and extends in a westerly direction to or near Seminary, thence in a southerly direction by way of New Hope Church to intersect Mississippi 42 at or near Sumrall.
  • 71. Mississippi [588] — Begins on U. S. 84 approximately one mile east of Collins, thence in an easterly direction to or near Ellisville.
  • 72. Mississippi 42 — Begins at or near New Hebron and extends in a southeasterly direction to or near Prentiss, Bassfield, Sumrall and Hattiesburg, thence continues from or near Petal to or near Runnelstown, Richton, and ends on Mississippi 63 at or near Sand Hill.
  • 73. Mississippi [598] — Begins on the Ellisville-Runnelstown road and extends east to or near Ovett.
  • 74. Mississippi [505] — Begins at or near Roberts and extends north to U. S. 80 at or near Lawrence.
  • 75. Mississippi [503/504] — Begins at or near Decatur and extends in a southeasterly direction to Hickory and Hero, thence in a westerly direction to intersect with Mississippi 15 at or near the Newton-Jasper county line. Also beginning at Hero and extending in a southeasterly direction to Rose Hill. [amended 1958]
  • 76. Mississippi [528] — Begins at or near Bay Springs and extends to U. S. 11 at or near Heidelberg.
  • 77. Mississippi [537] — Begins at or near Laurel and extends to the Jones-Jasper county line.
  • 78. Mississippi [533] — Begins on U. S. 15 at or near Stringer, thence running in a southerly direction along the Ridge road to intersect Mississippi 20 at or near Soso.
  • 79. Mississippi [532] — Begins at or near Mt. Olive and extends southeast to U. S. 84 at or near Hot Coffee.
  • 80. Mississippi [304] — Begins at Robinsonville, Tunica County, and runs thence in an easterly direction to or near Banks, Eudora, Hernando, and thence in a northeasterly direction to or near Lewisburg, to intersect a link of state highway at this point.
  • 81. Mississippi [308] — Begins at or near Maud and extends east to or near Dubbs.
  • 82. Mississippi 32 — Begins at or near Pertshire and extends east to or near Shelby, thence continues from U. S. 49-E or near Webb to or near Charleston, Oakland, Water Valley, Bruce and Houlka, thence continues from Mississippi 15 south of Houlka to or near Van Vleet and Okolona.
  • 83. Mississippi [306] — Begins at or near Coldwater and extends east to or near Independence.
  • 84. Mississippi 4 — Begins at or near Fox Island and extends east to or near Tunica, thence continues from U. S. 61 south of Tunica to or near Sarah, Strayhorn, Senatobia, Holly Springs and Ashland, thence continues from Mississippi 5 approximately 6½ miles south of Ashland to or near Ripley and Booneville and continues from Mississippi 30 near Booneville at the Big V to the Bentonite Mill, Livingston's Store, New Site and Bay Springs to Mississippi 25 at or near Dennis. This route includes a spur to Ashland [MS 370].
  • 85. The state highway commission is hereby authorized and empowered to number any of the above numbered highways on the state highway system or to change and renumber any highways presently numbered except those numbered as U. S. numbered highways shall be continued with their present U. S. numbers, or changed to conform to any future U. S. numbering system. Any such numbering or changing of numbering of highways by the Commission shall be by order spread at large on its minutes.

The state highway commission when requested may furnish engineering assistance to any state institution in the construction, maintenance or repair of its roadways or driveways, whether specifically made a part of the state highway system hereinabove or not, if in its discretion such requests for assistance is deemed reasonable and proper and such work is deemed advisable and necessary.

3. All said highways and streets as designated in paragraphs 1 and 2 and now maintained at state expense, together with such additional highways hereafter taken over up to the mileage limitation above fixed are hereby placed now, or if and when taken over, under the supervision and control of the state highway commission, for construction and maintenance as hereafter provided and full jurisdiction over said highways and streets is now vested or shall vest when so taken over, as the case may be, in the state highway commission, and shall constitute the state highway system.

In the future, no such highway or link of highway shall be taken over by the state highway commission unless the bridges thereon are also taken over at the same time, except that where prior to the passage of this act, acting under an agreement between the highway commission and the board of supervisors, the county has begun construction of a road project or sold bonds therefor, then in such event such road may be taken over without the bridges if so agreed prior hereto but only within a period of two years from the passage of this act.

Application for additions to the state highway system filed by any board of supervisors shall be accompanied by a survey and plans of the road improved or proposed to be improved, such plans to be in the form prescribed for improvements by the standards required by the state highway commission and the commission shall consider and decide whether or not such additions meet the requirements of the law and whether funds are available for the execution of the proposed work.

CHAPTER 298 House Bill No. 128 AN ACT to designate certain additional highways as state highways and to place them under the jurisdiction of the state highway commission. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Mississippi:

Section 1. The mileage of the highways hereinafter specifically designated is in addition to the total mileage limitation of eight thousand six hundred (8,600) miles which is set out in section 2, chapter 6, laws of the extraordinary session of 1949.

Section 2. The following highways are hereby designated as State highways and shall be placed under the jurisdiction of the State Highway Commission for construction and maintenance as hereinafter provided, and such highways, together with the highways designated in section 2, chapter 6, laws of the extraordinary session of 1949, are declared to be the state highway system of Mississippi:

Section 1. The following highways are hereby designated as state highways and shall be placed under the jurisdiction of the state highway commission for required construction and maintenance, and such highways shall be an addition to the state highway system of the State of Mississippi and are hereby declared to be a part of said state highway system. Such additional highways shall be taken over by the state highway commission for construction and maintenance as soon as any such highway or link of highway, including the bridges thereon, has been constructed according to the plans and specifications of the state highway department and has been brought up to such standards as are required by the state highway department, within the limitations of section 8021, Mississippi Code of 1942, as amended.

The following highway is hereby designated as a state highway and shall be placed under the jurisdiction of the state highway commission for required construction and maintenance, and such highway shall be taken over by the state highway commission for construction and maintenance as soon as any such highway or link of highway, including the bridges thereon, has been constructed according to the plans and specifications of the state highway department and has been brought up to such standards as are required by the state highway department, within the limitations of section 8021, Mississippi Code of 1942, as amended. Section 1. That a certain section of U. S. Highway No. 90 within Jackson County, Mississippi, hereinafter described, shall be retained on the state highway system and under the jurisdiction of the state highway commission and which said highway is described as follows, to-wit:

CHAPTER 89 Senate Bill No. 1302 AN ACT to designate a certain section of road in Walthall County, Mississippi, as a State Highway and place it under the jurisdiction of the State Highway Commission. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Mississippi:

The following highway is hereby designated as a state highway and shall be placed under the jurisdiction of the State Highway Commission for required construction and maintenance, and such highway shall be an addition to the state highway system of the State of Mississippi and is hereby declared to be a part of said state highway system. Section 1. The mileage of the highways hereinafter specifically designated is in addition to the total mileage limitation of eight thousand, six hundred (8,600) miles which is set out in section 2, chapter 6, laws of the extraordinary session of 1949.

CHAPTER 316 Senate Bill No. 1556 AN ACT to amend section 2, subsection 2, chapter 6, laws of the extraordinary session of 1949, as amended, by the deletion from the designated state highway system of a certain link of road situated wholly in DeSoto county. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Mississippi:

Section 1. Section 2, subsection 2, chapter 6, laws of the extraordinary session of 1949, as amended and supplemented by the addition of certain links of highway to the state highway system, as the same appear in section 2, chapter 298, laws of 1954, is amended by the deletion therefrom of Item No. 24, in the "Northern district," as the same appears on page 373 of the general laws of Mississippi of 1954, said Item No. 24 reading as follows:

24. [MS ?] Beginning at Pryne's Store, which is located at a point on an existing road approximately three (3) miles east of Bull Frog Corner on United States Highway 51, and running from Pryne's Store in an easterly direction approximately eight (8) miles to or near Olive Branch, Mississippi, to intersect with United States Highway 78, all in DeSoto County.

Section 2. The purpose of this act is to delete, remove and expunge the above described link of highway from the designated state highway system in order to permit the earlier development and completion of said roadway, which it is the consensus will more likely result from the removal of said link of highway from the designated state highway system than would result from its inclusion and remaining in the state highway system. It is contemplated that this change in the designated state highway system will be incorporated in the completed amendment which would include any and all other changes which will be made to the state highway system during this legislative session and this accounts for the form in which this amendment appears.

Section 3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

Section 1. The state highway commission is hereby authorized and empowered, in its discretion, to convey to Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, for consideration of $1.00, the following described land situated in Oktibbeha County, to wit: A strip of fifteen (15) feet of equal width off the entire north side of the northwest quarter of section 12, township 18 north, range 14 east.

Section 2. The above described land was obtained for use in connection with the construction of a state highway, but has since been abandoned and is no longer so used, but is needed by the board of supervisors of Oktibbeha County as part of a county road to be improved, maintained and operated for the benefit of the public. The board of supervisors is hereby authorized to accept a quitclaim deed from the state highway commission under the provisions of this act.

Section 3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

CHAPTER 451 House Bill No. 284 AN ACT to amend section 8033, Mississippi Code of 1942, Recompiled, to require the State Highway Commission to continue to maintain certain state highways. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Mississippi:

Section 1. Section 8033, Mississippi Code of 1942, Recompiled, is amended to read as follows:

8033. Status of existing state highways. It shall be the duty of the State Highway Commission to carry out all contracts and agreements, including Federal-aid projects, and including agreements under the County Highway Aid Act of 1946, being Section 8328-01 et seq., Mississippi Code of 1942, Recompiled, heretofore made or entered into with any county, subject, however, to applicable rules and regulations of the Public Roads Administration; and it shall be the duty of the Highway Commission to continue to maintain all State highways now under maintenance, or hereafter taken over for maintenance, the purpose of this provision being to preserve the status quo of all State highways insofar as such highways have been taken over and control and jurisdiction has been assumed by the State Highway Commission; provided, however, that if any highway or link of highway is removed from the State Highway System by legislative act, or by relocation or reconstruction, it shall no longer be maintained by or be under the jurisdiction of the State Highway Commission, but shall be returned to the jurisdiction of the board of supervisors of the county through which such road runs; provided further, the Highway Commission shall retain and maintain as State highways any portions of U. S. Mississippi Highways Numbers 11, 49, 51, 80 and 90 that have been replaced and the new portion constructed as a part of the Interstate Highway System, and the same shall be continued to be maintained as a part of the Mississippi State Highway System until removed from such system by legislative act, or until traffic counts indicate that said highway or highways or portions thereof no longer form a substantial part of the State Highway System in which event the Highway Commission may remove said highway or highways or portions thereof from the State Highway System and return said roads for maintenance to [the county or municipality in which they are located, as provided in subsection (2) of this section.]
