Collaboration style and topics

Since there are only 4 of us at present, we should probably have a collaboration of the month - and informally or formally decide on one topic from the candidates. ray 22:41, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

As per ray's comments in the talk page for Collaboration of the Month. Let us select any well known NP which is stub and can expand it. I would suggest to go for Kaziranga National Park which is stub but is well known. Amartyabag (Talk) 10:07, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Good, I think this is a consensus. I have also destubbed or created most of the blanket articles, and some additional ones on Forest Department terms we may need. Category sorting is left, as are issues of userboxes, user categories, logos, and stub templates. If we can get these done by Jan 31, we can start off the Wikiproject properly in Feb. By the way, I am now going to vanish for some time and resurface a few days later. ray 01:55, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

Some suggestions for improvement

• Use of Hindi in PAs: I think there is no justification of using Hindi in all PAs except in the areas where hindi is the popular local language. If we continue following this norm then all Wikipedia article related to India should have hindi name, which I think is highly debatable. Remove the use of hindi language policy. I am strictly not against any language.

Hmm . The standard have a global PA infobox, which looks sufficient. Only a few countries have their own PA infobox, typically due to additional info which cant be accomodated by the original infobox (like website url for australia). Ulterior Motives

Reasons for working on this topic are:

• Concern about recent human intrusion into this wilderness area, especially illegal forest clearing and agricultural cultivation.
• Concern about the resulting reduction or extinction of the high proportion of endemic species of flora and fauna in these unique South Western Ghats montane rain forests.
• Concern about degradation of the culture and habitat of the native nomadic Palayan tribes people who have lived in the caves of this area for millenniums.

Thanks Ray and Shyamal for inviting me, I will love to contribute much more to Wikipedia on India’s Natural Heritage and Wildlife etc. which are interests close to my heart but I am still not so good in keyboarding, that makes me really very slow. I really admire the work on Wikipedia that anybody can access easily, especially the growing work on wildlife and conservation in India that you all are generating. I am glad you all have got together for Wikipedia:WikiProject Protected areas of India and am sure overtime coordinated effort by members will improve the coverage systematically. I feel very happy that in the long-term this material will be easily available to younger generation, school kids and budding naturalists not only of our region but worldwide spurring their love and respect for environment as a whole.

Historical anecdote

Shivaji's general Tanaji Malusare used Shivaji’s famous pet monitor lizard which is locally known as ghorpad named "Yeshwanti" with a rope tied around its waist for climbing up the walls of the Sinhagad fort from it’s steepest and the least guarded side in the dead of a moonless night during the Battle of Sinhagad. Once he had scaled up himself after the giant lizard, up the sheer steep cliff unnoticed, he threw down rope ladders for others to climb. This Common Indian Monitor (Varanus bengalensis) found locally in present day Maharashtra is the species of Monitor Lizard said to have been used which is also known as ghorpad in Marathi.

Ghorpads are famous for their ability to cling to smooth surfaces, and were traditionally trained for this purpose by herders in the area.

This is a fine piece of historic anecdote, the only problem is that it is without references from a valid reliable source. Atul provided only two references, one was to a music site article; the other being from indbazaar.com. None of these are reliable sources at all. I've requested Atul to provide a reliable source such as books from historians, but am yet to see that. There is actually no problem in having this anecdote, but we need to be careful to stuff an encylopedia with facts that are supported (so far) only by a music site article. If this is a historic fact, there must be some historic references to it. Provide that and move along, that's the wikipedia policy. Thanks. --Ragib 23:08, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

I noticed User:Ragib started editing the the bengal monitor page by distorting the historical anecdote of Maratha over Mugal victory first. Strange. Made it into a "persistant myth" from fact, now he wants a reference for each sentence otherwise he threatened to take the pagragraph out.

Huh? Where does "maratha vs Mughal" even come into the picture!!! You add a tidbit to an article, when asked for references provide a google cache link to a music site, and now making even more misleading claims about what I stated!! Why don't you just provide a reference for the information, from a reliable source (which is not from a google cache of a music site). Verifiability is Wikipedia's basic principle, and instead of finding hidden motives, why don't you just dig up a usable reference? Waiting for that. Dear Atulnischal, I'm not sure what grand plan you have in mind, but copying the section on Flora and Fauna from the India page and pasting it to create a new article and then referencing it on the India page itself requires some explanation. "Wildlife of India" deserves an article in its own right, "Wildlife of India" is a popular term that people look for and search for on the internet, school kids, nature lovers and people who want to go on nature and eco-tourism trips etc. General people and younger generation looking for Info on Indian wildlife do not look for scientific and little known and boring words like Fauna or Flora or terminology like Protected areas of India etc. All this can be brought together under "Wildlife of India" article by a popular and commonly used and searched name. As per the content of this article: everybody is free to edit and add info on it.

Hi Atul, The nathistory-india page may be revived. It would perhaps not have gone to afd if you spent some time on writing carefully. Would suggest that some time is spent on reading and studying the structure of featured articles. You will note for instance that the captions on most of these articles are short and precise. The body text should also be in the encyclopaedic style. Advocacy is not to be included (for instance a statement like "We should save this species" would almost invite an afd to your doorstep). Cite the best references, place material in context and do not add too many or irrelevant external links or see alsos. That should take you a long way. cheers. Shyamal 01:09, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Shyamal, I have a few things to say too

They started the deletion process because they said, IT IS A NON-NOTABLE List, which is of course not true at all as you and I both know.

Also People of all skill levels are welcome to edit and contribute to Wikipedia and such, it was basically an article that had the correct vision, but needed editing help, you know what I mean, a technical writer's touch.

This list itself is a new media thing and people have to still wakeup to such networking platforms like these and appreciate their contribution to society, unfortunately journalists have not yet realized the potential to do features on lists from time to time which would have been really very handy to quote. The paucity of Newspaper articles about the list was also the main issue as it could have established the notability in a second. There are several Wildlife and Conservation Journalists on the list though, just have not woken up to a new living and breathing thing.

Also 95% of the writers out there are not scientific writers, or technical writers, assistants usually take care of these little things for them.

And as far as contributions on Wikipedia go, people are supposed to help edit and rewrite articles here to improve their quality, correct spellings of others, punctuations, rearrange facts and paragraphs to provide a better flow, provide proper sources, ............ who ever gave you the idea the that the contributor who started the page / article needs to finish it. Over the years hundreds or thousands of people should help improve an article and update it from time to time and NOT put it up for deletion on the third day, this kind of behavior discredits Wikipedia itself.

Since I did lot of research on Asiatic Lion hence I noticed another short coming of purely scientific or technical writing, you guys do not hesitate at all to quote an article even though the article may have all nonsense in it, Asiatic Cheetah Diet is still quoted from a bad source with nonsense in it, the National Geographic article from 2000 on Asiatic Lions has nonsense that Asiatic Lions are highly inbred, but technical writers dont hesitate quoting such reputable sources and present it as gods own truth.

Now lets come to our project "Protected Areas of India" or Zoos, you guys are so busy technically writing and correctly quoting that you forget that basics like, how much is the ticket, how to reach, closest railway or airport, what is the best season to visit, what are the accommodations offered, are guides and rides / cars available, who are the contacts etc., any special clothing suggested (Snakes, mosquitos), etc. etc. are also import information that should be included and will be useful to the reader, there is ofcourse no need for us to sell a holiday package to them but a little reader oriented info would be definitely useful to include in an Encyclopedia. A little bit of thinking outside the box is needed for techies.......

This article is a good stub and should never be deleted as it contains vital datas. Many articles on Wikipedia are mere stub and stub is not a criteria for deletion. World Heritage template

Hi! I created a template for World Heritage Sites: {{Infobox World Heritage Site}}. Since many protected areas tend to overlap with World Heritage-designated places, will it be possible to re-format the template in the same way as the Level 1, 2, 3... style? In that way, we can prevent too many infoboxes showing repetitive infos. In terms of its relationship with the IUCN protected areas, I found a link: http://whc.unesco.org/cairns/iucn-priorities.pdf (refer to page 15 of this publication/page 17 of the pdf file). Need help on Kodaikanal and Silent Valley annual temp/precip bar graph

Excellent work on Climate of India! {{Handshake Award}} I see it is a Selected article candidate. Should be a Featured article as well.
I have been working on Silent Valley National Park and Palani Hills National Park but hit a wall when I get to Climate sections. Real data for those places seems unavailable.

The closest reference source I've found is:
Shea, D.J., and N.A. Sontakke, 1995: The Annual Cycle of Precipitation over the Indian Subcontinent: Daily, Monthly and Seasonal Statistics. TN-401+IA, National Center for Atmospheric Research, 168 pp.
But now how to get it and then what to do with it? Even if I had the data, I'm graphics challenged.

What I ideally want for those articles is just like the Bar graph for Madras

Can you make these graphs and rewrite the climate sections of these articles or even refer this request to some Wiki weather graphics guru who can/will?

Also just wanted to remind you and suggest that most countries have a national animal, national bird, national plant, national tree, national flower etc., it will be nice if we can accommodate these in these country-wise wildlife articles, check out National Emblem, National Animal, National Bird etc. etc.

Just an idea as kids will be swarming to read these articles soon.....

Updated PA list

An updated source of the PA list is the National Wildlife Database Cell, WILDLIFE INSTITUTE OF INDIA DEHRADUN, (position as on April 23, 2007), retrieved 7/25/2007 LIST OF PROTECTED AREAS. Searching for sources

How to Search for (1) "Latest" and (2) "Archived" ""NEWS & FEATURE ARTICLES" on "Schools / anything" from top newspapers and magazines, also as well how to search for relevant Blog Postings many of which contain local "Print News Articles" not available online - EXAMPLE Mayo College

As we all know in addition to referring to the main official website if we can research as many news and feature articles from top newspapers and magazines on each subject (article on wikipedia) and highlight top points in our own words or by "quoting" by properly referencing all such research, it improves the wikipedia article many folds and makes it much more credible along with providing many excellent independent unbiased reference links to readers.

• In the following "News Search pages" you could search by trying different keywords for the same subject, and also change the subject to any other you are currently working on. Please be beware many of the search results will not be relevant. Please also note at the bottom or in the left margin of each "search result page" you will see links to additional related "search and alert services" being offered by these companies (Yahoo, Google etc.), all for free. Also note current news searches for current times may come up blank if there has been no current news or feature article written in the last few months, look in Google News ARCHIVES in that case:

The actual common full name for it is "Wild Asian Water Buffalo", it is endangered (and it is little known outside wildlife circles), see IUCN Red List, while Domestic Asian Water Buffalo selectively bred for thousands of years is very famous and numbers in millions and has various livestock breeds. There are many breeds of domestic water buffalo.

Jim Corbett National Park

I have completely rewritten the Jim Corbett National Park article. Since I am now beginning to realize that the article has GA potential it would be of help to me if editors took time to weigh the article and voice their opinion on what more needs to be added to it.
