Draft categories

Think we could get categories of players by draft team and year? Then we could have a separate category for ones who played professionally despite not being drafted, as no list for that exists as far as I know. --fullcourt 23:30, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

"Notable" players on position pages

I disagree with including these sections as written on Point guard, Power forward (basketball), Shooting guard, Small forward, and Center (basketball).
Who says these players are notable? What criteria is being used to determine what makes a player notable? Right now, it's all opinion. It's completely unsourced POV. I believe consensus needs to be reached on criteria for what is going to be considered notable, and players should be added to the lists with sources showing they meet these criteria. These sections are completely unacceptable per WP:A as they are currently written. --OnoremDil 15:47, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

• The list can let people see some examples of the best players on the position. The criteria is they have won awards in the NBA such as MVPs(includes Finals MVP and All-Star MVP), All NBA teams(includes All-NBA Rookie teams), All-Stars, Rookie of the year and so on. If they are former players, being in the Hall of Fame or the 35th and 50th anniversary teams will also make them on the list. Brave warrior 17:50, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

• If it's a list of players that have won MVP's, gone to All-Star games, or made the All-NBA team...then it should say that it is a list of those things, not that they are "notable." Without clarification, it's just going to be a section which is constantly in a state of edit-warring because people want to see their favorite players on the list. I'm extremely happy to see a group of editors finally tackling this problem. I've been trying to keep the opinion-based "notable" players list out of the basketball position articles for months, but I don't have the time to keep up any more. There seems to be a handful of editors (younger children, perhaps) who are hellbent on adding unsourced lists of "notable" players, which you all realize is original research and edit war fodder. If there's going to be a list of important players at each position, I would suggest using the NBA's own 50 greatest player list that the league created in 1996; there's already a wiki article on this, in fact. The problem with this solution is that it's very US-centric, but it's a start. Thanks to all of you for taking an interest in keeping the basketball position articles NPOV. • There is a US bias, as well as an anti-college bias to that. What prevents college point guards from being "notable" ? I wouldnt mind if this section was labled "Point Guards from the NBA 50 greatest players" or something else like that. "NBA" or "National Basketball Association"

I'm an admin who wanted to handle the requested move of National Basketball Association Playoffs to NBA Playoffs, listed as "uncontroversial". However, when I took a glance over Category:National Basketball Association, I discovered a huge mix of "NBA" versus "National Basketball Association" in page and category titles. Can the wikiproject please decide on one naming convention? A case could be made for both directions: while MoS generally calls for unabbreviated titles, the acronym is so famous that it's far more prominent than the spelled-out version. On the other hand, in similar Category:National Football League, spelled-out titles win by 10:1 ratio. Duja► 07:11, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

When it is something like "NCAA Division I-FBS football", that's pretty unique ... but are there any other notable countries/sports that might have an NBA with a playoff? If so, it may need to be spelled out. Otherwise, I agree that NBA is better. --B 21:03, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

The reason for the inconsistency is that Koavf decided to engage in mass unsolicited page moves to expand abbreviations. Some were fixed, and others apparently were not. The convention has been to use the abbreviation, and this page should be speedily renamed to restore that convention. --fuzzy510 05:51, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

It was I who listed it, it'll be OK for 2006-07 "National Basketball Association" season, but for Playoffs and Finals articles, I'd go with the "NBA" acronym since it is the brand name. Delete this project and merge it with Wikipedia:WikiProject Basketball

I suggest merging these two projects and deleting the NBA project. The NBA project clearly does not to exist. That project already overlaps the NBA project. Also basketball isn't just about NBA, there are college leagues and many international leagues. If like this, there should be many other projects about different leagues such such as WikiProject college basketball or WikiProject Euroleague or something. Creating a WikiProject on the NBA is clearly US biased. All the members in this project could be a member of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Basketball after. Brave warrior 00:28, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

If you have specific interest or like the NBA, just join the basketball project. Isn't NBA a part of basketball? The basketball project already overlaps this project. Why does the NBA deserve a separate project on Wikipedia? What makes it different from international and college basketball? I strongly suggest merging these two projects. Again, from some of these comments, we can still see that people think NBA is different from other leagues. But, I am sure that some people will think that other leagues such as Euroleagues are better than the NBA. The NBA doesn't deserve a separate project. This is not about elitism or superiority whatsoever, please do not clutch at straws. Nothing espoused in the NBA Project page proclaims superiority and elitism. Look at the WP Projects page -- plenty of specific interest groups exist even within an overarching entity. A rebuttal from this wikiproject's creator

As the creator of this wikiproject, I feel that I need to make a few things clear about why I set up this wikiproject. A wikiproject is designed to help better manage a number of article related to one particular subject. While I think it's a good idea to have a wikiproject for basketball by itself, just having one singular basketball wikiproject for EVERY basketball article is a horrible idea. This isn't a point to play the bias game or anything, and I am NOT saying that the NBA is better than the other pro leagues out there, but there are a TON of articles about the NBA, it's players, and it's teams that have issues that might get lost in ONE wikiproject. Is the NBA a part opf basketball? Of course. Can we co-operate with the basketball wikiproject? I'm all for it! But, IMHO, to completly delete a wikiproject just because it technically falls under the sane category is just crazy. Should we delete a wikiproject about New York City, just because a project about New York state exists? Or how about merging EVERY project about Europe into one E.U. project? Where will it all end? The purpose of a wikiproject is specialization, otherwise, why even start one in the first place? Again, I'm not trying to put down any other basketball related articles on wikipedia, but I believe there are certain specific needs in the NBA articles that need to be dealt with, and that's why I started this wikiproject. Celtics Subproject

I know that other sports related projects have some sub-projects for teams (specifically NFL and MLB). I was wondering if A) I could start a subbject dedicated to working on Boston Celtics related pages, and B) If any members of this project are interested. Interesting idea, although I'm not entirely sure about a precedent of a wiki project about a singular NBA team. Heck last week , we had some suggest that a project about one league is too much. If you want my opinion, start off by bouncing around some of your ideas for Celtics articles on this wikiproject first, and then go along from there. Just a suggestion. Nicknames

Is there any objective measure to find out what nick warrants an entry in one's Wikipedia article? E.g. Shaquille O'Neal has literally dozens, but many were en vogue for a short while only, and in the end very shortlived. Tim Duncan e.g. is "Big Fundamental", but the other nicks (TD, Timmy, Merlin) are a bit doubtful IMHO. Baron Davis has several (B-Diddy, Bulletproof Baron, Bodyguard), but nothing that really sticks. Should we limit this? Nicks which appear on player's nba.com bio page + basketball-reference.com page only? —Onomatopoeia 18:00, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Been an issue for a while. I think there's a bunch who's monitoring the overkill of nicknames for the more popular articles like Shaq, but editors (anon or not) will keep adding all manner of nicknames to the infobox. Still, as a matter of policy, I agree with you that the nicknames should be limited to those supported by references. This is the only way to ensure things don't get out of hand. Under the normal run of things, nicknames shouldn't be too controversial such as to require a reference, but well! Chensiyuan 23:35, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Nicknames given out by Shaq, Kenny Smith (or any of the TNT crew), and blogs of record like the Wizznutz should be in there. Anything else is frivolous. Especially when it's just a guy's initials. Only MJ gets away with going by initials.Kgppra17 05:04, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

GFDL infringement

As an FYI, the content of quite a few Wikipedia articles on former Laker players has been posted on lakerplayers.org without attribution. For example, http://www.lakersplayers.org/luciusallen.php (compare Lucius Allen) and http://www.lakersplayers.org/elgin-baylor.php (compare Elgin Baylor) are non-compliant with GFDL (I call it plagiarism). There are many other examples. If any members of the project feel motivated (particularly if you find your own contributions posted at that site), you might want to inform the site's webmaster of their blatant violation. I gave it a go a few months ago and received no response. Maybe there will be more impact if a group effort is involved. Myasuda 03:50, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

Home arenas

I would like to know why the Home arenas section comes first in team articles. What is the main reason behind this? It is a stubby section and will always be. Template:NBA season record

Because the NBA season starts in less than a week, I assume the season-by-season records are staying and the W–L records will be periodically updated. If this is the case, can we employ Template:NBA season record in each of the thirty teams’ tables? I made a more detailed post about this back in April, but it was too far from the regular season and didn’t appear to have any consensus (and contained an error, now fixed thanks to AzaToth). It’s a bit obsolete now, but here it is. I currently have the template transcluded from my sandbox so that editors can preview some tweaks, but I’d appreciate it if nobody actually submits an edit. —LOL 21:52, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

How do I do this? (Team templates)

I was looking at Template:Chicago Bulls, and I noticed that a few colleges aren't wikilinked. How would I link to those colleges within the current template style?

Standings templates

Seems to me the standings should be individual templates. The standings for the Central Division are maintained in (at least) three places: 2007-08 NBA season, 2007-08 Detroit Pistons season and Central Division (NBA). The smart thing to do is to have the standings as a template and only need to update them in one place. The only potential issue is that the standings have different information in each of the three places. X96lee15 13:41, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Uniforms in NBA team infoboxes

I'm running a dry-run here to test the different uniforms and how they conform to the templates. The templates will replace the copyrighted images such as this if the people here agree. Currently there are some patterns that are missing and I'll be uploading some images to largely eliminate those problems - even some of you guys can do it, all you need is MSPaint and PowerPoint. --Howard the Duck 16:23, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

Conflicting height stats

Josh Howard’s height is listed as 6′5″ by NBA.com and 6′7″ by ESPN, so there are conflicting edits between two users ([1][2]). For statistics, shouldn’t NBA.com always take precedence because it’s the primary source? —LOL (talk) 22:44, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

"Leading scorer"

I have a question about the various 2007-08 NBA season articles (Warriors, Lakers, Magic, etc.) Does the "Leading scorer" section apply to the players of the team alone or to both teams in the game? On the Warriors article, players such as Carlos Boozer, Tim Thomas, T. J. Ford, Ray Allen, and Kevin Martin are listed, but perhaps they should be replaced with the Warrior players who scored the most for their team. Bash Kash (talk) 07:12, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

I’m not the author of those tables, but I’m inclined to believe that the “leading scorer” only applies to one team because the NBA.com schedules are done this way[3] and the article is focused on that one team. —LOL (talk) 07:21, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

NBA teams assessment

I assessed all team articles in order to learn the state of each article. Here is my assessment. If no one minds, I'll create a subpage here at WP:NBA in a couple of days and move my assesment page there. As you could see most of our Team articles are in bad condition and it would be great if we collaborated to improve one article each week. New Infobox

I have created a new infobox (Template:Infobox NBAretired‎) for retired players because the current one is just not cutting it, yes it is very similar to Template:Infobox NFLretired, but I believe that it is way better than the current one. There are still many errors, like the link to stats and things like that, so if anyone could fix that it would be great. All-Star Pictures

Half of the recent or current All-Stars don't have pictures on their pages. Some of those are in reach of GA, and with some effort, FA. Basketball110 03:03, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Template Question

Hi. I'm working on the article of Donald Boven (who was in the news recently when Shaq nearly broke his consecutive foul-out record). Is there a template that has NBA player fields and college coaching fields? After his NBA stint, Don Boven went on to coach for his alma mater, Western Michigan University. Team seasons

I don't plan on being too involved with articles not dealing directly with the Cavaliers (being they're my hometown team) but I created an article for a list of their completed seasons based on the same lists we used in the NFL WikiProject. As you can see in the Cleveland Cavaliers seasons article, I feel I've been a sufficient backbone for all future team seasons list. Naturally, as I'm not going to contribute to this project full time, I'm going to expect anyone and everyone to contribute to the betterment of these lists. They won't be able to be up for "featured" status as all the redlinks have to be gone, but working on it, it can be done.
