Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Comics/DC comics work group/WikiProject Batman

Project Welcome

Thanks, Doczilla, for creating this WikiProject. I know I often find the primary WikiProject: Comics to be very super-hero centric, and since my comic interests tend to be expressed as: [(independents, comic strips, comic history), +Batman] its focus tends to be outside my area of expertise. Splitting Batman off into a more manageable chunk is probably a good idea. ~CS 22:25, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Batman Romantic Interest Lists

List of Batman girlfriends could be a fun one to clean up. I have no idea why so many of those women are listed there. Each name needs citation or removal. Other names might be added. Doczilla 21:47, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

I forgot that article existed. I still don't know what "remains" is supposed to mean, and some of the names are a little suspicious. Lois Lane? Doctor Light? Harley Quinn? What constitutes "girlfriend" in this list? They flirted once? Some sexual tension written into a single story arc? The article name should probably be changed to "Batman romantic interests" or something similar if the scope is going to be so broad.
And even that is only if this list needs to exist. Right now only Sasha Bordeaux links there (she's not even on the list!) and all of this material is covered at Batman_supporting_characters#Love_interests. ~CS 22:25, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
I don't have a clue what "remains" is supposed to mean. Doczilla 17:58, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
I'm raising the prospect of deleting this over on that page. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by CS42 (talkcontribs) 18:05, 16 December 2006 (UTC).

Well, this was deleted, but immediately reared its head again as [1] -- with all the same problems that the list had. ~CS 03:51, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

The above category was deleted, however a bot listified it, creating the original page again at List of Batman love interests. I have listed it for speedy deletion. ~CS 06:44, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
And, after forgetting about this for a while, I have nomiated it for deletion again. ~CS 18:06, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. Also, I note that yours is a comparatively new project. You may be interested in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Guide, which has a lot of information regarding project organization from several of the most successful WikiProjects. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 17:55, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Project banner

One thing that would definitely help people know about this project is developing some sort of project banner. Do you think you could create one, or, alternately, if no image for the banner can be made, maybe talk the people in the Comics WikiProject to append a banner of yours, like WikiProject Military history, WikiProject Biography, and WikiProject Australia do? Also, do you all consider Christian Bale to be within the scope of the project or not? If yes, adding some sort of statement to that effect on his talk page might be a good idea. Badbilltucker 01:59, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

It's a good idea. Please create such a banner. This project won't become an actual project unless people take on some of the tasks they think of. Doczilla 04:59, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
The one problem I can't figure out how to solve is how to get an image for the banner. Most banners do use images. The downside is that only public domain images can be used on banners. Can anyone think of any public domain images which could be used? Alternately, if you wanted, you could contact the Wikipedia:WikiProject Comics and ask them if they would be willing to add a section to their banner which would be for this project's use. Some of the bigger projects have these multi-use banners, and they do decrease the crowing a bit on talk pages. Badbilltucker 18:19, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
As this project gets off the ground, I think it is pretty much a subset to WikiProject Comics anyway, so I am not adverse to a varient of that logo. Regarding images, I'm uncertain what Wikipedia rules allow and what they do not -- are all Batman-related images verboten because the character is copyrighted to DC? I could see re-using the WikiComics banner with the head of the New-look Batman logo peeking into the bottom of the word balloon, like a lunar eclipse. We would not need to use the entire Batman logo -- just a small portion of it. If any and all images of Batman are disallowed, we could also concivably use an image of a real bat, provided a public-domain image can be found. ~CS 20:18, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
By wikipedia rules, any copywritten image cannot be used on a project banner. I did find this one image, Image:TIA 2006ToyFair LEGO Batman Promo Dscn7058a.jpg, taken by Lar, which should be available. It could probably use some trimming if it were to be included in the banner, though. I personally have absolutely no talent in this regard, but it is possible he might. Would you want me to check with him to see if he could more or less isolate the Batman image? Also, if the Comics banner were to be used, I think it would probably best work if this project's banner were set up like the Biography banner on the Talk:Thomas Jefferson page, with a section regarding this particular project appearing at the bottom of the banner. Anyway, that's the best image I can come up with, I think. Lar would probably know if there were any copyright problems with it. Badbilltucker 21:00, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
Hi guys and thanks Bill for the heads up. I certainly could crop the image if you wanted a cropped version, it's not that hard. But the background is a bit jumbled due to the location within the Javits Center. What specifically did you have in mind? As for the copyright status... I dunno! It's a representation of a copyrighted image done by LEGO and they may have copyrights of their own. So the thing represented might be protected, I dunno. I'll ask around. The image itself I release under very usable terms, of course. This image used to be in the American International Toy Fair article, I think. (still there) ++Lar: t/c 04:30, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
Bad news, after checking, the image is Fair Use (as it is of a copyrighted statue) and thus eligible for mainspace only. I've deleted it off Commons and moved it to en:wp. It can't be used as a project banner decoration. Sorry! ++Lar: t/c 05:26, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Taskforce

Would it be better to have this as a taskforce of WikiProject Comics, rather than a separate Project? Have a look at WP:MILHIST for how they have their taskforces set up to see what I mean. Hiding Talk 15:27, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

I have no objections. In fact, I think it's a good idea. As mentioned above, this project is in many ways a subset of WikiProject Comics anyway. ~CS 17:37, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
If you can come up with an image that could be used on the banner tab, all the better. Personally, I can't think of any, as you can see above. Badbilltucker 18:03, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 16:36, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

The Untold Legend of the Batman

I created this article for the comic series, but I'm not entirely sure of the history behind it. I put additional information and requests for clarification on the talk page, if someone wants to take a look and improve things. Thanks TheHYPO 20:31, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Proposed Work Group.

Hi we were talking about yours and the Superman project here and well it got to proposing Workgroups for the Comics project, with one of them dealing with only DC comics (discussion here, Proposal: Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#DC Comics). If this group should become a reality, we were wondering whether you might consider perhaps merging with it, along with perhaps the Wikipedia:WikiProject Superman. The fact of the substantial overlap of the two groups in things such as World's Finest Comics, Superman/Batman, and the like would we think be somewhat beneficial. Anyway, thanks for your attention.Phoenix741 00:15, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
