Becoming a tutor for NPPSCHOOL edit

If you are interested in becoming a tutor for the NPPSCHOOL, you have come to the right place. After reading what I've written below, you may think otherwise.

I will begin by saying that being a reviewer for NPP can be a daunting task in and of itself. Teaching others how best to review is even more daunting because we are taking on more responsibility and accountability, all at a volunteer level. Teaching trainees begins with the Wikipedia:NPP tutorial, complete with flowcharts and a video. Consider it the curriculum and our main book of reference as we teach new trainees about the many different perspectives, nuances and applicability of WP:PAGs, while bringing clarity to what constitutes notability.

Teaching critical thinking and allowing trainees to exercise those skills during the tutorial is paramount, and why we use unreviewed articles in the NPP queue for our live exercises. Hands-on experience is a good thing, but before we even begin reviewing, we first need to know if the trainee has what it takes. We cannot teach common sense as it is inherent, and we cannot teach experience because it is developed over time, but we can guide, explain and demonstrate to our trainees how to review, what to expect, and what is expected of them.

If teaching NPPSCHOOL appeals to you, please let me know at my UTP. Atsme 💬 📧 15:17, 11 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

NOTE: I will be on a 6 wk +/- break beginning 16 June 2023 Please contact one of the NPP coordinators if you have any questions about becoming a tutor. Atsme 💬 📧 19:53, 18 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

List of graduates edit

Looks like my list of graduates edit got reverted. Looks like Atsme and I are in favor, and Cassiopeia is opposed. Anyone have any additional thoughts? –Novem Linguae (talk) 01:21, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Novem Linguae Good day. All trainers can provide the programs where the graduates have done their work and gradated. It is not a good idea to provide the info as new participants would just find the program and copy and paste the answers (not saying wihtout the students name they can locate the program). I say this is because in CVUA program which I am also a trainer and notice "many" participant just copy the answers and drop out at the mid of the program because they can answer the questions when it comes to the practical questions and I removed all my graduated students info or those who are still in the program. Not a good idea Novem Linguae. Cassiopeia talk 01:29, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Cassiopeia, I respectfully disagree, and agree with Novem. My program is not something that can be seen in advance to the program's detriment, so I am restoring my list of graduates. You don't have to list yours – it is by choice. I think it is important for more editors to learn from the tutorials, and be even further prepared for the job after training with a tutor. As it is now, we have more editors reviewing who never attended NPPSCHOOL, and until that becomes a requirement, we need to get the tutorials out there for as many prospects as we can. Knowing what questions a trainee will be asked during my course is definitely not a detriment; in fact, quite the opposite is true. It actually helps for them to know what areas they need to study – it makes them better, more confident reviewers – and it is good for them to come to the tutorial fully prepared. The difference between how I teach, and a documented "test" that can be answered via memory is the simple fact that my questions are random, and cannot possibly be known ahead of time. I see nothing at all wrong with that approach. It has worked quite well for my grads so we have something concrete to model after. It also helps to develop camaraderie as does the Discord chat that Novem Linguae made available for NPP. A few reasons for my position: (a) it shows a sense of community, (b) our grads worked hard for the recognition of being a grad, (c) camaraderie can be very productive relative to advancements and efficiency in our approach and software/coding, and (d) learning from the experiences of others who are NPP reviewers is very helpful. Adding – I've been giving some thought to the "list of grads", and we should give more credit to the editors who went through NPPSCHOOL & graduated. I just gained another student when IndyNotes graduated & applied for the right (see my UTP). That is a good thing – activity around the school is a good thing. In order to keep attracting good prospects for NPP, we need to show that (a) it is worth taking the course, (b) graduating is worthy or being recognized, (c) there is camaraderie, and (d) when done right, it can be a very rewarding experience. Novem Linguae, why can't we create a whole new page – NPPSCHOOL GRADUATES – list them in alphabetical order, date they graduated, tutor's name (so we'll know what course they took), level of activity, if they are no longer NPP reviewers & why, and whatever else you can think of to add. We can still keep the graduate column at the school for when a new editor graduates, and keep it there for 2 wks or a month (to see if they stay hooked, get the right, and because we're basically still guiding for a few weeks after they graduate), and then move them to the Grad page. Wha'cha think? Atsme 💬 📧 20:25, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hey Atsme. Thanks for the idea. I think it might be a lot of work to keep the two pages synced accurately. For maintainability, listing the grads only on this page is pretty attractive. However I am not opposed to a graduates page if that is the direction you'd like to go. Hope that helps. –Novem Linguae (talk) 20:33, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
I hear ya, but my reasons are valid. The problem I am facing is running out of space in the table – and not at all concerned about syncing. My list has already increased the row size, and I have 3 in training right now, one of whom is on the last section before live exercises. Atsme 💬 📧 21:38, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Atsme, All NPPS trainers do not list them as well as all CVUA (except one) dont list their student either. You have diff program (short program -complete the program in 2 weeks) in NPPS compared to the rest of the trainers (long and comprehensive program - complete the program in 3 months). It is not about sense of community, camaraderie or recognition as those who graduated are recognized if they choose to put the NPPS user tag in their user page and also a banner/banstar in their talk page when they pass the program. To me it just provide the answers to the editor who doesnt want to read the guidelines for I have been working on this program as the trainer since day 1 since I am the one who start the program. There is no evidence with list name who encourage another to join the program but to steal the answer instead - and when the list is too long it just take up unnecessary space in the trainer column and it look ridiculous as it was the reasons for one of the former trainer in CVUA who have over 10 graduate students to remove all the students names in the trainer's list. We as the trainers the goal is to train and get the student to understand and apply the NPPS program so they would review new articles with confident and that is all. IT IS A BAD IDEA.
