This page is a guide to exploring, searching and finding images on literature and books. These include covers and illustrations from books, and clip art about books.
Book covers
editFree book covers belong on Wikimedia commons, and can be found there in appropriate categories.
Non-free but fair use book covers belong on Wikipedia, and can be found in Category:Non-free images of book covers. All non-free content should comply with Wikipedia's non-free content criteria policy.
First edition covers are preferred. If a first edition public domain image of the book cover exists, it should be used instead of the non-free image of a contemporary edition. Non-free book covers should be used if and only if there exist no free book covers of any earlier edition.
Sourcing
editIf you have access to the book (by owning, borrowing, or via a library), you can scan the cover in yourself and upload it, or simply take a digital photo and crop it.
Many covers are available online and can be found using an image search, such as those available from Google or Yahoo. If a search for the title does not yield results, try putting your search in quotes or appending the author's name to the search. Author and publisher websites often have images of book covers as well.
Uploading
editOnce you have an image you would like to upload, click the "Upload file" link in the toolbox in the left column and follow the instructions. Remember to use a clear and descriptive file name. When uploading a book cover, remember that {{Non-free book cover}} can be customised with an optional parameter. If you add {{Non-free book cover | Title = title of book }}
to the image, it will appear in the category under the appropriate initial letter.
