See WP:Referencing for beginners. However, we need significant coverage in reliable sources that are inedpendent of the subject, such as newspaper articles about Karam or published independent reviews of her exhibitions, to establish her notability. A LinkedIn page, like her own, her father's and her gallery's websites, is a primary source and does not establish her notability. Huon (talk) 12:17, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

See above: If there are reliable secondary sources available online, please add them to the article. The sources provided so far do not establish Karam's notability. As our village is a backward, undeveloped area of city Peshawar ,Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa Province Pakistan, so finding and attaching the references is very difficult. I have tried my level best to give some of the nearest places near our village. This is a kind of craze and aim of my life to register our village name in Wikipedia as its already registered in our province record. Hence i am uploading the details again as same as i uploaded before.

As the reviewer said, Wikipedia does not accept other Wikipedia articles as references. Even if it did, the articles you linked to do not mention Babuzi. If Babuzi is registered in the province record, can you provide a link to that record (if it's available online), or enough bibliographical information to tell me how I can look up that record entry? For geographic places such as villages Wikipedia's notability criteria are very low, but we still need some source to allow our readers to verify that the village exists. Furthermore, the article's content, such as the settlement history and the name's origin, must also be verifiable. Right now it is not, and we'd need published sources to back it up. Copywrited Material

My submission has been denied because it states that my content is copywrited but I don't know how it is. Please help — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eabrookman (talk • contribs) 19:31, 19 July 2012 (UTC) The draft has been deleted (the standard procedure for copyright infringements); I therefore cannot tell what copyright it violated. If you used a copyrighted source such as compay websites but had permission to do so (which would require the source to be released under the CC-BY-SA license, you will have to provide proof of that permission via the procedure outlined at Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission#When permission is confirmed. Once permission has been confirmed, you the draft can be undeleted. But it might be easier to just paraphrase whatever source you used in your own words. Huon (talk) 19:56, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

If the website was written by you, you (or your employer, if you were paid to write it) hold the copyright, and you can release the content under the CC-BY-SA free license. An example declaration to release information under that license is provided at Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries. You'll have to mail that declaration (modified so it pertains to your specific website; basically, fill out the gray-marked areas as appropriate) to "permissions-en AT wikimedia DOT org". When you have done so, one of the volunteers at WP:OTRS will take note of your permission, and the deleted draft will probably be undeleted, and a note about the license will be added.

If the copyright is not held by you personally but by the company, you'll need a company representative with sufficient legal powers to send that form (that may still be you, depending on your position within the company). Please note that I'm not a lawyer and cannot reliably tell you who holds the copyright to that website. I would expect it to rest with the company, not with you personally, but I don't guarantee for that either way.

If you wrote the company website on which the draft was based, you might also want to have a look at our guideline on conflicts of interest. Writing articles about your own company is discouraged. Huon (talk) 16:40, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

We have twice had an article rejected. The second submission contains multiple third party verifications, as requested by the first reviewer, but was again rejected. We are told the piece reads like advertising. Really? It simply states facts and offers an abundance of support. How else can we describe the procedure, other than what it is?

We would like to hear a detailed response to what exactly is being objected to. The article is here:

Hi. You had, have some issues with the formatting. We were missing the {{reflist}} under your references. This automatically displays your inline references. Most of your inline references should be there now. I completed the first 2 or 3 references using the Cite tool on your editing toolbar. Also some of the references were what we call wiki-links. I fixed a few of those, so you could see how it is done. You can get more information at WP:CITE and WP:WIKILINKS. You can always ask for help on these issues also.

As to your article, it does sound like an essay promoting a product or service. I think some other reviewers here can explain exactly why better than me, I'm more of a technical guy. You can have a look at WP:PROMOTION and WP:WORDS as a start. Hopefully someone smarter than me can jump in here an give some examples from your article.  :- ) Don 19:03, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Dear Help Desk,

The article I am submitting, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Biomatrica is about my employer; however it is not intended as a promotional piece.

The initial review response indicated, "This submission appears to read more like an advertisement than an entry in an encyclopedia. Encyclopedia articles need to be written from a neutral point of view, and should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources, not just to materials produced by the creator of the subject being discussed."

The purpose of the article is to inform readers of Biomatrica, which is noteworthy for its especially unique ambient temperature biostablity technology, and the thinking that led to its development. I have tried to present the company information in a neutral tone, although it is somewhat difficult to not present the information in a positive light, given the company's extraordinary success (and the lack of noteworthy negative events).

Additionally, the majority of references are from independent, established publications:

One of the article's problems is that it cannot decide what its subject is. Major parts deal with issues only barely related to the company - the biochemistry of anhydrobiosis, the market for biological sample storage (much less relevant than Biomatrica's share of that market), the biobanking industry (the source for that paragraph barely mentions Biomatrica and does not explain whether they have any sales in that area), and so on. In contrast, key figures relevant to the company, such as revenue figures or the number of employees, are not given.

The article also has instances of what I call marketingspeak, especially in the lead: You could remove "focused on" and substitute "products" for "product portfolio" without any loss of information. We also do not use trademark symbols, and "Dr. X, Ph.D." seems redundant unless the "Dr." and the "Ph.D." represent different degrees (I doubt they do). See also WP:MISSION.

And while the article has a wide selection of good sources, some are just press releases - I'd get rid of those. Huon (talk) 22:47, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your feedback on my article about Biomatrica. I have removed the instances of marketing-speak to which you referred, substituting "develops and sells" for "focused on" and substituting "products" for "product portfolio". Also, I removed the instances of "Dr" and just left the "Ph.D." suffixes.

I must disagree with your comment that the article "cannot decide what its subject is", and that "Major parts deal with issues only barely related to the company - the biochemistry of anhydrobiosis, the market for biological sample storage (much less relevant than Biomatrica's share of that market), the biobanking industry..." These subjects are intimately related to the company, e.g., the chemistry of anhydrobiosis forms the basis of the company's core technology. Regarding the market size of biological storage vs. the company's share of that market; I think both are relevant. The market size is notable given that most individuals, inside and outside bioscience research, do not realize how much is spent ($34 billion) for purposes of sample storage. Also, most scientists are unaware that an ambient temperature storage technology for biological samples, which can potentially save scarce research dollars for other research requirements, even exists. Regarding Biomatrica's market share of this $34 billion, the company's revenues are not disclosed because it is currently a private small business. I think that the information on the various markets the company serves, e.g., biobanking, is certainly directly relevant to what the company is all about.

Regarding your comments on the citations; the one from Nature Methods devotes approximately 3 paragraphs to Biomatrica, so I would not say that the article "barely" mentions the company. Also, the few press releases cited are primary sources of information, and would be used by future researchers investigating the company. However, I agree as a matter of general principle that press release citations should be kept to a minimum.

Lastly, I plan to include the number of persons employed by the company (approximately 25) in a corporate facts box, as found in other Wikipedia articles on businesses.

I submitted an article for review on the subject of the book BELIEVENIKS!

The article was declined on the basis of the general notability of its subject and the lack of independent sources.

The book is the only one of the novels written by Jonathan Lethem that does not yet have its own Wikipedia article. Lethem is surely notable by any standard: multiply published novelist and essayist, New York Times bestseller, MacArthur Fellow, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, among numerous other distinctions. Moreover, the book's co-author, Christopher Sorrentino, is the author of several books, one of which was a finalist for the National Book Award.

In my opinion, these factors combine to bestow notability upon the article's subject.

As for sources, I'm looking for guidance as to what constitutes independence. One of the sources is an article that appeared in New York Magazine (certainly independent of the book, its publishers, and its authors), another is the book itself, via which assertions concerning its contents can be confirmed. I could really use some help determining what sources are necessary to undergird a brief article whose fundamental purpose is to describe a published book by a major contemporary author, with brief, and neutral, reference to its form and content.

If it's such a notable book, it should be easy to find reviews in independent publications. Maybe Kirkus Reviews has covered it, or the Times Literary Supplement? Something like that would be a neutral reference, much more so than the book itself or anything else written by its authors. The New York Magazine article may indeed be a secondary source, but the article doesn't really use that source (for example, it doesn't discuss the abysmally low sales figures). Wikipedia content should be based on independent sources; this article is not. Huon (talk) 23:42, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

It was a close paraphrase of the article here in The Hindu. An example:

Saraswathy Bai in Harikatha.

Jimmy Cozier (b. 1954, Brooklyn, NY), is a New York City based jazz musician. He is a multi-reed instrumentalist, who plays saxophones, flutes, and clarinets. He is the father of R&B singer Jimmy Cozier.

This is my first submission - and I think I have it mostly right. I would like to know if I did the references right and also the hyperlinks.

Is it best to just wait for it to be reviewed,?

I did references </ref> but there are no numbers, so I inputed them in the reference.

Also - I made hyperlinks for names with wikipedia articles, but they disappeared, so I then did them with the Link symbol above. , is that correct.

Also - the big issue, and I think I addressed it, is that Jimmy Cozier (the jazz musician this article is about) is the father of r&b singer with the same name. He already has a page, and I wanted to find a way to make that clear - as I don't want these two merged.

The </ref> tag is just a closing tag and, by itself, doesn't do anythig. Footnotes are created by an opening and a closing tag: <ref>Reference text</ref> will create a footnote which says "Reference text", inserting the number in the place of the tags, and the {{reflist}} template in the references section will display the corresponding footnote text. I have done some copyediting and tidied up the first reference as an example, but I wasn't sure which reference was supposed to go where; please do the others analogously. As an aside, the faculty biography is a primary source, and many of the other sources mention Cozier only in passig or not at all. Some seemed to be not about him but his son. I'd emphasize those secondary sources that discuss Cozier in some detail and get rid of the less helpful ones. Huon (talk) 23:42, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

First of all, you might want to have a look at our guideline on conflicts of interest. Writing articles about close relatives is discouraged. To resolve the problems, you must show that significant coverage in reliable published sources exist. Maybe newspaper articles about his career exist, or he's discussed in textbooks on the history of tennis? While online sources are obviously easier to access for our readers, print sources are equally acceptable if you provide enough bibliographical details to identify it (for a newspaper article that would probably be the newspaper, the date, the page number and, if possible, the author). Paper documents in Flye's personal possession, however, are unsuitable because our readers cannot be expected to visit Flye and check the source. The best bet would probably be the Tacoma Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame - that should have been covered by newspapers, in 2005 we might be lucky enough to have the articles online, and if we're really lucky, his entire career is discussed at that opportunity. If you want to create a draft on UK Black Pride, you can use the article wizard and follow its instructions; they are pretty explicit, and the wizard takes care of all the technical details. If you want to request other editors to write the article, the right place is Wikipedia:Requested articles; you can add your suggestion and the source to the relevant sub-page (probably either organizations or unsorted social science).
