Reliable Spources?

Referring to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Jane Booker --

I'm puzzled as to what would be considered reliable sources for an article about a living British actress. I have cited IMDb, the BAFTA and EMMY award sites, and the actress's resume as listed online by her agent.

I have been unable to find any other sources more reliable than that. What is Wikipedia wanting?

Hi Tlqk56,

First, please see WP:IMDB. What would be reliable are mainstream media sources, books, magazines, either or or off line, etc. What we are wanting is to be cited reliable third party sources. There are several reasons why this may be a problem. 1)Maybe you just have not looked in the right places. 2)They don't exist because the person is not that notable. 3)They don't exist because the person wants to maintain their privacy. And, probably other reasons. Also, only information that may be contested or is controversial, i.e., contentious "needs" to be cited. I see references to IMDb here all the time, so I didn't know it wasn't considered reliable. All I'm trying to do so far is list the TV shows, movies, and radio shows she's been in. I have internal Wiki links for a lot of those, as well as the other sources I mentioned. Certainly nothing controversial or debatable. So any idea what the problem might be?

I really don't see why I should have to include a source for every item on the list, as the other pages I've consulted as a guide don't do that. But I'm beginning to think I must be missing something.

If I own the video of something she's been in, is there a way to list the box as the source, or do I have to find a RS that includes her in the cast -- she's been in over 40 productions, that will take a long time, and not all list include minor characters. The major ones are not a problem.

I have looked over your article and even did a little touch-up for you. You have a fine reference: http://www.therichardstonepartnership.co.uk/artist-details/booker_jane But have not used it. It has even more listed than the IMDb, and is reliable. Just because others have added IMDb does not mean it will not be challenged and removed at some point. You have done well so far, but at this point is is basically a list article. Your referencing is fine (except for the IMDb), but you have a better substitute now. Thanks for the info. I think my problem may be that I used other similar articles as examples, assuming that was a good way to start. I guess it isn't.

I think this will be basically a list at the beginning -- I'm finding I can't access British papers for more info. Is a list a problem? I guess I took too seriously their statement that you should start something you want and let others add to it.

Also, do I need to verify every item on the list separately? I now have about 12 possible sources, most of them with only one show. Should I use them all?

I have read, and reread, a lot of the pages on how to write an article, but they don't seem to tell me the things I need to know, so thanks again for responding. :) Tlqk56 (talk) 05:48, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We have a section on a page: WP:OTHERCRAPEXISTS. Just because it is there does not mean it is good. If a list covered by several citations, you can simply list the references once at the top or bottom of the list. Really bad looking otherwise. Many articles start out as stubs and become great articles after a time, but the stub has to be good to begin with, and it takes time. Just because you have not found the information or help you are looking for does not mean it does not exist. There is so much information hidden in the nooks and crannies of the Wikipedia, it is scary. Perhaps you would benefit from a visit to the Teahouse. Looking at your references, #1 is from the Park Service, so not really independent. #2 is perfect, find another one or two like that. #3 does not mention the park. Next, please see WP:PEACOCK. Words and phrases like: myriads, resort is famous, best view of the beautiful Davao Gulf, an imposing view, a refreshing backdrop, vast gardens, lush field of exotic and tropical foliage, lofty pines and fruit trees, amazing, Marvelous... I hope you get the point, these words do not generally belong in the Wikipedia. Find another good reference or two, replace or remove the advertising words, and you may have an article. Also, it would be good if you told exactly where the park is located in the lead paragraph, when I finally saw Davao Gulf I knew it was in the Philippines. Review of Wikipedia:Tutorial/Editing/sandbox

re: Wikipedia talk:Articles for Creation/Huw & Tony Williams

I have put together a short article on Huw and Tony Williams and submitted it for review. This has been partly at the request of Huw Williams - he is keen to have an accurate representation of his past work (in this instance with Tony) in order to avoid misrepresentations that have appeared on other websites - is there some way I can put him in touch to verify this?

So the intention of the content submitted so far is to provide a place-marker for future submissions - whether by me or Huw - to cover the period concerned (early 1980s - 2001) in greater detail. Inevitably, more citations will follow (again, it was difficult to know how to cite a discography - the lists on other artists seem to stand as a statement of fact - perhaps the current list will benefit from addition of dates - another task for me to liaise with Huw about...)

Sure, you can put him in touch, though we will not find him for you here at AFC help- you will probably have to look for him outside of Wikipedia. Note that any information added, even if sourced from him, must be verifiable and fulfill the policy on biographies on living people. Did your second paragraph contain a question? I can't seem to find it.

The article, in its current state, needs references before it can accepted, although there is no deadline and you can always ask for help at the reference desk. A412 (Talk • C) 00:51, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Help Desk,

I would like to add photographs to the article on The Minnesota Radio Talking Book Network, but I don't seem to be able to get the knack of it. Can I not copy and paste a photo? See Help:Contents/Images and media. You need to upload your photo to Wikipedia first, then add the code to the article, in the form of [[File:full name of file.jpg|thumb|right|text description here]]. Sionk (talk) 16:18, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
