Hurricane Isabel struck North Carolina on September 18, 2003. On Hatteras Island, high waves and storm surge created a temporary inlet that isolated Hatteras for two months, after parts of North Carolina Highway 12 were washed out. Isabel's strong winds knocked down hundreds of trees, many of which fell onto power lines, leaving about 700,000 people without power. Due to the storm, three people died in North Carolina, and statewide damage was estimated at $450 million (2003 USD). (Full article...)
