Derek Jeter (born 1974) is an American baseball shortstop for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB). A five-time World Series champion, Jeter is regarded as a central figure of the Yankees during their success of the late 1990s and early 2000s due to his hitting ability, baserunning, fielding, and leadership. He is the Yankees' all-time career leader in hits (3,448), games played (2,725), stolen bases (357), and at bats (11,119). His accolades include fourteen All-Star selections, five Gold Glove Awards, five Silver Slugger Awards, two Hank Aaron Awards, and a Roberto Clemente Award. Jeter is the all-time MLB leader in hits by a shortstop, and the 28th player to reach 3,000 hits. Jeter has been one of the most heavily marketed athletes of his generation and is involved in several product endorsements. His personal life and relationships with celebrities have drawn the attention of the media throughout his career. Teammates and opponents alike regard Jeter as a consummate professional and one of the best players of his generation. (Full article...)

  • Most recent similar article(s): The most recent baseball player and athlete to run was Babe Ruth on July 11. Somerset County Cricket Club in 2009 ran on July 19, an association football team (Aston Villa Football Club) ran on August 16 and a college football game (2007 Appalachian State vs. Michigan football game) is set to run on August 29.
  • Main editors: Muboshgu
  • Promoted: 2012
  • Reasons for nomination: Jeter made his MLB debut in 1995, and is retiring at the end of this season. September 28 is his final regular season game (and the Yankees are looking less and less likely to make the playoffs, sadly).
  • Support as nominator. – Muboshgu (talk) 17:55, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong support - Muboshgu has worked hard over the years (four FAC attempts!) to get this article to where it is, and the date makes perfect sense. Being on the main page will be nice on the last day of his career. Go Phightins! 18:07, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support even though as an A's fan the mere mention of his name makes me want to vomit in my mouth every time.--Chimino (talk) 00:45, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Like the open cup final nomination above, this is a great example of running an article on a significant date that is not an anniversary of something mentioned in the article. Great idea to run his bio on the last day of his career. --SkotyWATC 17:09, 23 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support for the aforementioned reasons. ~zziccardi (talk) 21:42, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
