A template that was used only in 5 articles, most of its fields are in-universe. It was easily replaced by Template:Infobox comics organization, which has more publication and real world fields and is more standard, even for inclusion in categories. LoЯd ۞pεth 18:53, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

unneeded forks of {{convert}}. note this template is not used by (nor was it ever used by) {{convert/old}}. Frietjes (talk) 18:35, 17 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete. Repeat arguments from parallel situations Convert/text2, Convert/getunit, Convert/2, especially those by Jimp. -DePiep (talk) 08:28, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment these should be moved (with all the convert parserfunction set) to an open source code repository, such as GitHub or templates.wikia.com for the good of the MediaWiki community at large. The community regularly copies templates off Wikipedia, if they disappear off here, and they make copies of LUA templates that do not work without modules, this is to the detriment of the usage of MediaWiki and support for MediaWiki development in general. The WMF should set up some kind of userscripts.org type thing for template-scripting for MediaWiki. -- 70.51.44.60 (talk) 10:31, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
All other arguments aside, I don't think these are fit to serve as an example in any sense or way. Are there any other wikis using the set happily? -DePiep (talk) 10:34, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've noticed several MediaWiki wikis using very bad versions of convert that function poorly that were built by their own users, so a drive-tested version, such as the well abused ones from Wikipedia would be a boon to any MediaWiki wiki admins who wish to have a fairly well tested and feature rich version. (this also applies to all the other widely used ParserFunction templates we have been deleting since the introduction of LUA) -- 70.51.44.60 (talk) 06:42, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
So the answer is No, so far. The need is a thought only. Remember that this /flip2 is a fork and rarely used if at all, not "well tested". It fails MOS, and that it has not been brought in line with our own MOS tells something: a curse to even adapt or change it. Also keep in mind that not many wikis are bi-unit as the English one is. The German convert has ... 61 transclusions. -DePiep (talk) 11:03, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
As CONVERT does provide single unit display that would not need dual unit output (though in that case, it would not be the flip versions, just the plain old convert.) I've encountered other wikis that copied our LUA templates without copying the LUA modules and not understanding why things don't work, so some sort of repository is needed for MediaWiki. If any MediaWiki maintainers are reading this, they should give it consideration. -- 70.51.44.60 (talk) 05:37, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I can agree that a central depository would be useful (I recently saw a project proposal into this at WikiMedia, cannot find it now). However, that is not enwiki's job. The parsing Convert template is some ten years old, so wikis that wanted to adapt the enwiki version already have done do. We at enwiki can delete deprecated & non-useful tempaltes at our own choice, we have no obligation. Your "[other wikis] not understanding why things don't work," quite proves the point: parsed Convert is too intricated, and development here has stalled for two years so available help is nil. (OTOH, Module:Convert already has been set up i18n and the author has transported it to at least one other language; see Template talk:Convert ). Unless some really new aspect pops up, I think this subtopic is clear & finished by now. -DePiep (talk) 07:11, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
New wikis are created all the time, so when those wikis copy our templates is anytime, not just long ago. I do hope a parserfunction template repository and a LUA module repository are established by WMF for the sakes of the OpenSource and MediaWiki communities. The non-LUA versions would be relevant to those who don't activate LUA or can't want to learn another language on top of template scripting. -- 70.51.44.60 (talk) 05:51, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi IP. See this. This took me < 7 secs to find, while for days you still don't know who or what you are advocating for. -DePiep (talk) 21:08, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the heads up. -- 70.51.44.60 (talk) 06:25, 31 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
