Per this High Court ruling, the primary rationale behind not including fixture lists (their alleged copyright status) is no longer valid. Including fixture lists should be a matter of editorial discretion, and we don't need a disclaimer template. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 12:10, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If thats the case then we clearly don't need this. The way i am reading it, does this still not need to be passed by a uk court for a final ruling. Probably a formality though. I may be reading it wrong though.Edinburgh Wanderer 22:34, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    • It shouldn't be necessary to link "midfielder" ten or fifteen times in an article. Doing it once is enough. At the very least it should be stripped down to the four you've listed, though. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 12:43, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Keep - Lots of season articles use these templates. 2011-12 St. Mirren F.C. season, 2011-12 Hibernian F.C. season, 2011-12 Heart of Midlothian F.C. season. Adam4267 (talk) 21:20, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And they shouldn't, per WP:OVERLINK. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 23:30, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough but this as a consistent problem not just on the ones mentioned. However they are widely used and to me necessary. A compromise of leaving the generic ones seems fair enough as the majority of those may rarely be used.Edinburgh Wanderer 23:56, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Was this edit[1] to remove this template from Template:Extended football squad player not a bit quick on the draw. Edinburgh Wanderer 21:04, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It was by request. Furthermore, removing auto-linkage helps to show how little direct use (i.e. not called through another template) these all see. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 09:43, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
if the main ones are kept then it really should be reinstated. I think its clear most people want it as part of that template. And looking at the request it seems to me it was because it was at TFD. The problem is there is over linking and not linking at all.Edinburgh Wanderer 15:38, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, reinstating it simply results in overlinking again. The role can easily be manually linked in the first instance. "I think its clear most people want it as part of that template" is a statement without evidence, let alone a convincing rationale. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 10:13, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    • We're getting a lot of "per X" comments here. Just to point out that right now, the only ones which are used at all on articles are GK / DF / MF / FW. There's no excuse for retaining the rest as we don't retain things in templatespace indefinitely simply because someone at a Tfd feels it might be useful. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 09:48, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree as a compromise the main ones being kept is fine. When it was linked to that template was anymore of the others in use. I would of thought ST may have been used but thats just a guess.Edinburgh Wanderer 15:38, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not talking about a compromise. I'm talking about a worst-case scenario. All of them should still be deleted, but on the off chance that anyone can convincingly explain why the arguments to deletion are not valid (rather than just chirping in with "it's useful") that would provide some excuse for retaining the ones that are actually in use (all on the same handful of articles, by the way). Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 10:13, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Chris there is no reason to delete the ones that are used. Your rationale of largely unused and unnecessary is no better than the arguments to keep them.Edinburgh Wanderer 14:09, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Edinburgh has a good point. At the very least we should KEEP the four major ones. The others are still helpful because they are specific. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.68.251.245 (talk) 20:25, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think it would help to split this TfD, as bulking all 18 templates together is muddying the waters. We seem to have reached a consensus that the 14 unused templates can go. We could then return to the remaining four to discuss if they are "useful" or just "widely used". U+003F? 10:52, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Im not so sure we even have that. Only two you and me have suggested that.Edinburgh Wanderer 14:09, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You're right. But I don't think we need any consensus to delete the 14 unused templates; WP:TFD#REASONS would suggest that only used templates should be discussed. Whatever the rules are, I think the used and unused templates should be considerded separately. Cheers. U+003F? 14:51, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have any objections to that if no one else does. As you said there are a few others being used but they could be substituted.Edinburgh Wanderer 15:19, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    • Comment The only issue I have is that it is opposed to WP:REPEATLINK, but that's minor when we're only talking about two characters. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 20:28, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep because the discuss warning is annoying to look at on season pages — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.68.251.245 (talk) 20:25, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong Keep - Take a look at the season page that I have been editing this season for Carlisle. If you delete them then everywhere abbreviations are used you are going to have to explicitly explain those. Brudder Andrusha (talk) 21:49, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fork of the {{football squad start}} system intended for articles on clubs at a level where shirt numbers and nationalities are less of an issue. The only article that ever used them was Tranmere Rovers L.F.C., which has now been transitioned back to {{football squad start}}. Ultimately, support for omitting fields can be added to the main template: consensus has been that the number of forks of this sort of template has led to an unwanted level of inconsistency and confusion between editors on how to lay out squad sections in articles. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 10:52, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete — agreed. Possible omission of fields should be part of the primary template, rather than (my) creation of a new fork. U+003F? 11:08, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
