How does a croupier know which betting chips belong to whom?

In roulette, for example? Since betting chips have identical look and color, are they marked somehow with player's name?--93.174.25.12 (talk) 16:25, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

No, roulette uses different chips than other table games. Usually, each player is given a different color to bet. A player will cash in and cash out at the beginning and end of their play at the table. You need to convert your standard casino chips into roulette chips before you start playing, then convert them back when you're done. this explains how that is done. --Jayron32 19:52, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

Can only think that Jayron32 is getting confused with some other game. The chips color denote their value only. The croupier only has to move the pay-out to the winning chip or chips were they lay on the table. The punter(s) themselves, then gleefully drag them back to their stool position. Once one enters the casino and got your chips, you can play on any table, whether it is roulette, crap, or blackjack etc., with the same chips. Another way of considering it, is that the punter has the onus to collect , the casino doesn't give the pay-out to the punter as an individual. Mind you, it may appear a little different in James Bond films but those are fiction -which abound with a lot of cinematographic license rather than reality...--Aspro (talk) 19:43, 12 September 2015 (UTC)

No, Jayron is correct. Roulette uses different chips than other casino games, with one or two exceptions. You can use regular chips for "outside" bets, e.g. odd/even. I've also seen the situation where one (and only one) player is allowed to use regular chips, since it is obvious who those chips belong to. Also, the roulette chips can have different values for different players (which the crew keeps track of, naturally). Clarityfiend (talk) 02:02, 13 September 2015 (UTC)

I agree that Jayron's reply is correct. In addition, the OP asked "which betting chips belong to whom". When an inside bet wins, the croupier will put the payoff chips in front of the player who has chips of the same color in front of him at the edge of the table layout. --Thomprod (talk) 12:18, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
