Alternative edit
Okay, hold on a moment here. I was looking through wikipedia and only saw articles to alternative country, alternative rock, alternative metal, and alternative hip hop. But back in the day the Depeche Mode, The Cure, and all those were Alternative. So um, where is the article on that? Or is that not the name of that genre? Am I getting something mixed up? Thank you very much and I know this isn't the most intellectual question or questioning.

- Bearing in mind that such labels are subjective, if you look at the articles you can see that Depeche Mode are assigned to "Alternative Dance", while The Cure gets the "Alternative Rock" designation. Possibly you can think of "Alternative" as a higher level classification that comprises several (but probably not all) of the sub-genres which have specific articles. --LarryMac | Talk 20:28, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

- Actually, they probably fit more under the umbrella of "Indie rock" rather than Alternative or New Wave. New Wave generally includes such acts as Elvis Costello and Talking Heads, while Alternative is usually confined to bands like Sonic Youth and the Pixies. I would include The Cure, The Smiths, and New Order as part of the British Indie Rock movement of the 1980's rather than "alternative". Howevr, this is mostly arbitrary, as with all genres, it isn't really a very useful exercise to debate the merits of naming a band as part of one genre or another. --Jayron32.talk.contribs 23:52, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
"indie" is usually reserved for those that are on an Independent Record Label. Looks like Depeche Mode were on an independent label (Mute Records) and so were The Cure (Fiction Records). As with all classifications though like the above say it's very subjective. Ultimately there's no agreed "rules" that i'm aware of (though indie does seem to mostly regularly be reserved for independent record label bands). 194.221.133.226 (talk) 10:39, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Animation depicting island being clearcut edit
Does anyone remember an animation depicting a machine similar to a combine harvester clear-cutting virgin islands churning out consumer goods behind it as it lays waste to the island? - Probably not what you're looking for, but there was an Animated version of The Lorax that came out in the 70s. It involved clear cutting a forest with whimsical technology, and creating fictional consumer goods (Everyone needs a Thneed!) with similar whimsical machinery. APL (talk) 18:23, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
