I was wondering if there was a graphic artist who would be able to replace the numbers in the photograph with descriptive terms similar to the second illustration. It's always better in my opinion to have a real image rather than an illustration, but with the numbers it is harder for readers to understand. Thanks! -- Tom (LT) (talk) 07:19, 22 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'm no expert, but I think the "soft palette" label is too high in both images.
I'd rather see this as an unannotated JPEG embedded in an SVG file that has the text labels. The labels can be changed and moved around without photoshopping the image.
Glrx (talk) 18:19, 26 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You may be right about the label position - I'm not an expert either. And, speaking of experts, another option would be to use: w:Template:Image label or similar, and a bit of CSS/template 'styling' (see the orange link to Tyrrhenian Sea and the "white" link to Veneto in Template:Italy Labelled Map Scalable/sandbox 2 for a very quick proof of concept), and then no image editing at all would be required for subsequent editing/moving of labels.

SVG would, of course be easier and more visually flexible for those of us who know how to edit SVG files but a possible advantage of the template approach is that the labels could be wiki-linked to the relevant articles using that method. (I know there are ways to hyperlink text within SVG files, but since Mediawiki renders pngs and not native SVG that seems like a non-starter).

I'm out of town for a couple of days so I don't have easy access to the right tools, or time, but I've put an "unlabelled" version in the file history - here - in case the positioning is clarified and you, or someone else wants to do something in the meantime, or I'm happy to do either/something when I get home Thurs/Fri. -- Begoon 02:40, 27 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Although ad hoc approaches such as {{Image label}} work, they introduce complexity and put the notion of producing illustrations in two or more places. Commons is supposed to be an image repository for everybody. Imagine a user seeing a nice, labeled, image in an article, but then discovering the image is unlabeled on Commons and the MW software labeling is not available where the user needs the image.
Yes, WMF not serving SVG is unfortunate, but I can understand one reason. Many SVG files (especially featured images) are much, much, larger than a PNG thumbnail. I wish an editor could mark small SVG files (say less than 40 kB) on Commons to be directly served instead of converted to PNG. Tooltips, linking, and animation would then be available. Allowing whitelisted external links within SVG files would also be good. The British colony flags could be simple ensigns that load external images of the colony badges rather than embedding them. One can make an SVG file that uses a Noto Sans webfont for Egyptian hieroglyphs; the hieroglyphs would display correctly on most browsers.
Glrx (talk) 18:58, 27 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Your first point is a fair one - there's nothing, however, to prevent the labelled image using its |link= to link to a separate, labelled SVG. Yes, this doesn't solve your "2 places" problem - perhaps it even compounds it, and the images would need to be synced - but it does provide hyperlinked labels in the article. Perhaps hyperlinked labels in the article are not important.

Part of the Mediawiki decision to serve png instead of svg, back in the early days, was lack of universal browser support for svg. I agree that the time has come to start re-examining that, and carving out at least some exceptions. The pace of change for Mediawiki can be painfully slow, though - there have been, for example, phabricator tickets and proposed solutions for the "'blurry' thumbnails of photographic png data" issue for years without anything being implemented.

Until the label positioning for this one is clarified we can't really proceed anyway, unless we produce an SVG with the labels in an unconfirmed location in the meantime, and possibly move them later.

I'll check back when I get home and have access to my full set of tools Thurs/Fri to see if anything is still required. -- Begoon 23:48, 27 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Phabricator tickets about the above:
I'll put an SVG together with your recovered JPEG later today. Glrx (talk) 16:50, 28 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I used CorelDraw to put Begoon's JPEG into an SVG file and added the labels. Unfortunately, CorelDraw inserts the bitmap as a PNG, and the resulting file bloats to 900 kB instead of base64 encoding the 273 kB JPEG. Glrx (talk) 19:51, 28 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Glrx, one thing I do have access to on my travels is an old version of Inkscape, so I dropped the jpeg in in place of the png. -- Begoon 00:53, 29 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Begoon Thank you. I was embarrassed about the bloat. Glrx (talk) 22:53, 29 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Tom (LT): Is the image OK with you? Glrx (talk) 22:53, 29 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Flag of Tar Valon

Could someone please create an SVG file of the "Flag of Tar Valon", which is described in TWOT as being "a stylized white flame... centered in a swirl or spiral of seven colors, running in order from the topmost center: blue, green, white, brown, gray, yellow, red. Each element of the spiral circles the flame completely one time before its widest end reaches the edge of the banner". This rendition of the flag shown here could serve as a guide for creating it. Although a few words of advice about said rendition:

1) I'd recommend flipping the flag horizontally, as the stylised flame is described in the books as facing the other way (so it should look kind of like the white half of the disc on this flag here, which is supposed to be a representation of said flame as well).

2) The thin black lines between the stripes should probably be removed, as I don't think they're supposed to be there.

3) I would recommend maintaining some kind of thin border around the flame, so that the white stripe doesn't blend into it.

4) Each stripe should be made to circle the flame once, in order to better match the description (as I don't think they all do in the aforementioned rendition).

5) And could the flag also be done in the same size dimensions as the other TWOT flags already existing on Wikimedia Commons, as seen here?

Sorry if this is a bit of a handful, I just hope I've explained myself well enough. Thanks. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 11:33, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, trying to fulfill that description is a geometric nightmare. I tried several approaches, and didn't like anything I came up with, in the end I've uploaded File:Flag of Tar Valon.svg, but I really don't like it very much at all. It looks more like a hypnosis aid from the 1970s than a flag... Perhaps someone else will think of a better approach, or I'll have some inspiration later. -- Begoon 02:48, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Begoon: Thanks again for your help, and sorry if this flag was rather hard to do, I did have a feeling it would be when I first requested it. But I thought I should try requesting it anyway. I do know it's a rather unusual description for a flag design. Just one thing though, perhaps the flame should be enlarged slightly so that the tip of it touches the top of the the red stripe above it (if only because then it would appear so that each of the seven stripes circles the flame once, in line with the description, whereas currently it looks as though the stripes circle it twice each)? But it's still a great piece of work for a rather difficult to work with description. Sorry about this, and thanks again.
Say, while we're here, any chance of helping me with one more request on this page regarding the creation of these TWOT flags? If it's any incentive, I can guarantee that it would be the last TWOT flag related request for a few months at least (which I'm sure you'd be relieved to hear)? Obviously, I'd be making said request regardless, but I would be extremely grateful if you were to help out again? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 14:49, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Snow Lion Fenian, I've enlarged the 'flame' as you suggested. The other request looks much easier, and I will look at it, but I'm busy this week so it may take a couple of days to fit in some time for it. Cheers. -- Begoon 22:31, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Begoon: That's fine, and thanks again for doing this. Much appreciated as always. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 21:42, 5 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Flags of Almoth and Seanchan

{{resolved}}

Article(s)
Certain TWOT articles.

Alright, would it be possible for someone to create SVG files of the flags of the following fictional nations:

1) The "Flag of Almoth", which is described in The Great Hunt as being "blue - for the sky above - and black - for the earth below - with the spreading Tree of Life joining them". So in other words, it would be a blue and black horizontal bicolour (blue above and black below), with a tree on it. Though since there's no description of exactly what the tree looks like, I'd recommend it as having a thick brown trunk, with spreading brown roots below, and spreading brown branches above, and with green leaves if possible.

2) The "Flag of Seanchan", which is described in The Great Hunt as being "a golden hawk in flight, clutching three lightning bolts in its claws... on a white background with a wide border of royal blue". These two renditions of the flag shown here and here (though please ignore the motto on the second one, which is definitely not supposed to be part of the flag) could serve as a guide for creating it. Though since the border is specifically described as being "wide", I'd recommend making the border as wide as the one in the second rendition, if not wider. And as for the size of the hawk, I'd recommend making it as big as the one from the first rendition (and aside from that, I suppose it doesn't really matter what position the hawk is actually in, as long as it's "in flight"). And regarding the lightning bolts, I know they're different colours on both the renditions, and that their colour on the flag isn't really specified, but I'd actually recommend making them silver, as the Seanchan characters in the books are described as having "three silver lightning bolts" on their outfits.

And in both cases, could the flags be done in the same size dimensions as the other TWOT flags already existing on Wikimedia Commons, as seen here? Thanks. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 15:46, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  Done - I found some time, so here's File:Flag of Almoth.svg & File:Flag of Seanchan.svg. -- Begoon 10:35, 4 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Begoon: (Sorry for the delay in replying) That's terrific, and thanks again for helping out here. And, as I said, this will be the last TWOT flag related request for quite a while, which I'm sure you'd be glad to hear. Admittedly, there is one last flag (at least the last one I know of anyway) from the franchise that I haven't requested yet, on the grounds that I'm really not sure which name the file should be given. Now, I know the flag in question has definitely been referred to as the "Red Wolfhead Banner" in the books, but another possible title for it could be the "Flag of the Wolf Guard", only the thing is, I'm not sure yet whether said Wolf Guard institution actually uses it as their flag yet, so the latter name could be erroneous. Hence until I have more information regarding the latter name, I probably won't be making a request for it for the next few months at least, or maybe longer. But anyway, thanks again for all your hard work over the last few weeks, you've really gone above and beyond. Very much appreciated as always.
