Portal:Hong Kong edit

I have recently revamped this portal using the box skeleton and I feel it provides a wealth of information. The news section is regularly updated. Ideogram 17:16, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Object:
    • No archives for the "Selected picture", "News", and "Did you know" sections.
As far as I can tell, no other featured Geography portal has News archives. Ideogram 19:45, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In general, any section with updating content should have an archive of some sort. Deficiencies in some of the other portals don't really change this point. Kirill Lokshin 19:59, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Portal:New Zealand and Portal:Oceania feed their news content into Current events in Oceania, and also into 2006 in New Zealand/2006 in Oceania, although these are updated infrequently. I see that there is a Current events in Hong Kong and Macao which has languished for lack of updates, and Chinese current events likewise.-gadfium 20:27, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
We are now feeding news content into Current events in Hong Kong (moved from Current events in Hong Kong and Macao) --Ideogram 19:41, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have created the archive links although there is nothing in the archives yet. Ideogram 23:55, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • No image credit for the selected picture.
What does this mean? Do I need a caption indicating who took it? Ideogram 19:41, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      See {{POTD}}. Kirill Lokshin 19:59, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      Done. Ideogram 20:24, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
For image credits, is the creator's commons name sufficient, or do I need their full real name? Ideogram 23:12, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think their commons name is sufficient; if they give their real name on the description page, you can use that, but I wouldn't bother digging too deeply for it. Just link the name to their user page on Commons. Kirill Lokshin 18:29, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Centering in the "Things you can do" box is broken by the image on the right.
Well, it is centered, it's just centered in the space not taken by the icon. Ideogram 19:41, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't look centered, though. You might want to consider removing the icon if you can't work around it, as it really doesn't add anything of value. Kirill Lokshin 19:59, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      Done. Ideogram 20:24, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Most importantly, the major rotating content sections have only been created today. The portal cannot be featured without either auto-rotating content or a substantial history of regular manual updates. Kirill Lokshin 17:26, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      How do I create auto-rotating content? Ideogram 19:41, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Create subpages like Portal:Hong Kong/Selected article/July 2006 (for monthly updates; other schedules are also possible, and examples can be pulled off the other featured portals) and then transclude them on the portal page by using {{Portal:Hong Kong/Selected article/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}}}}. Kirill Lokshin 19:59, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      I have created auto-rotating "Selected article"s and will soon have auto-rotating "Selected picture"s. I can't create auto-rotating "Did you know"s since I personally don't know that much about Hong Kong, I just spruced up the look-and-feel. Ideogram 18:12, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine. Most "Did you know" sections are done by hand, anyways; so long as the other content has some provision in place for future updates, this shouldn't be an issue. Kirill Lokshin 18:29, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Most of the issues seem to have been resolved. My major remaining complaint is that the archives don't seem to have been created. Now that there is auto-rotating content in place, it should be fairly easy to create the needed archive pages (which would transclude all of the auto-rotation subpages).
