I need a second opinion

Hi I was hoping you could give me a second opinion. My project that I'm working on for WP:ALASKA is expanding the articles on all our smaller communities and villages, specifically taking information from the State and copying it over to wikipedia. Part of that infomation is a mini directory of sorts on local government and public organizations for each community - their designated regional native corp, health corp, village council, city government, economic development councils, and so on. I've had the comment before that the directory information isn't encyclopedic, and I agree for the most part, however I think that due to the circumstances of many of these communities, it's important to list these organizations. I'm aware of a lot of the linkspam that occures on wikipedia, and with that in mind and since none of the listed organizations are of a commercial/for profit nature, I don't see any harm in their listing. For examples, see Alatna, Alaska, Alcan_Border, Alaska, & Allakaket, Alaska. Do you agree that most of this information is appropriate, and then if so, what is your opinion on the way it's currently being listed? One thing I am trying is on the Allakaket, Alaska page, the information is somewhat hidden and less in the way - what do you think of that listing? Hmm... well I put together a small test at User:AKGhetto/Sandbox & {{Infobox Alaska Communities}}. It looks horrible right now - it really needs some formatting work (hopefully tonight), but I guess it's a start. —akghetto ^talk 23:29, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

That looks a lot better! I'll work on adding I think Native Health organizations, and borough, and other than that it should be good. Also regarding our Fur Rondy debate from last night... I emailed them and have tentative approval to use their copyrighted history page as part of the article. They want to proof it first (not sure why - not like the page is going to be protected from editing in the future!), but it's at User:AKGhetto/Sandbox/Fur Rendezvous Festival if you have any other suggestions, feel free to change/add to that. I'm emailing them a link to it tonight, so I expect they'll look at it in the morning. Once I get the approval, I'll move it to the actual article. I'm not sure that follows Wikipedia policy, from my understanding of it. From the Wikipedia:Contributing FAQ:

I have, or can get, special permission to copy an image or article to Wikipedia. Is it OK to do that?

The text and images of Wikipedia are covered by the GNU Free Documentation License. Unless an item is covered by the same or a similar license, or is in the public domain, it cannot be used on Wikipedia. So you have to ask the copyright holder of the material to license it under GFDL.

Might as well just write a new article using their content; they can't copyright their own history, just the specific text they used to write it, and it's a better way to operate in general, I think. --Zero Gravitas 05:05, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

I see your point. I was going to ask them if it was going to be OK under the GFDL, however I can see that being a great legal headache (their part), at which point they'd probably just say no. To-do list

Talk:Cruzeiro Anthem

Hi, you removed my speedy tag saying the page was "useful as part of the deletion discussion here"; it isn't, though. The page Cruzeiro Anthem doesn't exist, and was deleted April 8 (the same day as the only comment), which is why I was tagging it under WP:CSD#G8. —Zero Gravitas 02:43, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Well. I could be wrong. CSD G8 says:

Talk pages of pages that do not exist, unless they contain deletion discussion that isn't logged elsewhere. This does not include subpages, nor archive pages, of unorphaned Talk pages.

Cruzeiro Anthem was created as some song lyrics, blanked, with a comment about it being a copyvio on the talk page, tagged as empty, and deleted on that basis. My interpretation was that the comment about it being a copyvio was therefore part of the "deletion discussion" for the page -- it is part of the paper trail, as it were, for how and why the page ended up getting deleted. —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 02:47, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Red Links

If you wish to re-instate the links (red) that have no Wiki link, then perhaps you should create the article for it. You should not use the excuse that someday there might be an article created, otherwise there should be many more items in red. Soapy 19:26, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for Wheathead revision

Thanks for the revision on Wheatheads. I don't get over here to Wikipedia as much as I'd like since we've been busy converting the site for Whole Wheat Radio over to a wiki format. So I appreciate knowing you're watching Alaskan pages like ours. I find it pretty fascinating that someone in Alaska has been so into the wikiworld for so long! Thanks again. Out the road

Yeah, those are great. The beginning of the road is variably defined, anywhere from DeHart's/Auke Bay to the ferry terminal, but lena and tee harbor are both quite out there. The only reason they're differentiated is that instead of houses scattered about, both Lena Pt and Tee Harbor have fairly significant population centers, neighborhoods and whatnot. Transportation in Alaska

I de-prodded the article on the grounds that there are some articles for transportation in states articles. A good example is Transportation in West Virginia and an excellent example is Transportation in Virginia. That being said, if you wanted to suggest a merge, tag it for expansion, or even AfD it for being dang-near empty, I would be willing to offer whatever assitance that I could. I imagine with all of the highways, ferries, small airports, and railways in your lovely state, someone could create a good article out of the topic someday, but I agree that the current version is far from there. You wouldn't be the first to give up before you got that far down the list. Its always a hoot for those of in states towards the end of the alphabet with filling out drop-down list forms online. Southwest Alaska

Hello, sorry about the Alaska template foul up. I was doing research online and it occurred to me that someone should write an article about Southwest Alaska, but I was going to make the link first and then either write a stub myself or let other people fill it out. Since it seems you are interested in it, perhaps you might be better suited to write an article than me. If so, then may I suggest that Southwest Alaska be defined as those boroughs (in lieu of counties) which are south and west of Kenai Peninsula Borough (keeping in mind that the west shore of Cook Inlet are also overseen by Soldotna). By this reckoning, Southwest Alaska would be composed of Kodiak Island Borough, Lake And Peninsula Borough, Aleutians East Borough, Aleutians West Census Area, Bristol Bay Borough, Dillingham Census Area, and Bethel Census Area. My opinion is that the inclusion of links and references to Kodiak, Alaska, Unalaska, Alaska, Bethel, Alaska, Kodiak Island, Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, Katmai National Park And Preserve, Alaska Peninsula, Brooks River, Aleutian Islands, and Pribilof Islands should also be considered. However, I assume that you may be both from Alaska and better informed than I am, so I encourage you to write fervently and edit mercilessly in the wiki way to create a new Southwest Alaska article. I do not know how to encode much more than boldfaced and hyperlinked text on wiki, so creating a spanking new article is rather beyond me. In the interest of full disclosure, I am an engineer living in Connecticut near New York City and I have worked and vacationed in Alaska several times. I have enjoyed being there so much that I am now seriously considering buying one of several houses in either Anchorage or Palmer. Moving there completely could invite some culture shock, but at the very least it amuses me to pursue the idea. Anyway, apologies about my edit and feel free to reply back if you wish, bye.
