Welcome

edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. Take a look at the welcome page. To stay in Wikipedia, an article has to be about something notable, that is, of general interest. Click on Notability for an explanation of what that means, and on Notability (people) for more detail. Also, it must give independently verifiable sources. Articles that don't meet these requirements are likely to be deleted.

Notability of Ran Raz

edit

A tag has been placed on Ran Raz requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article, which appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. JohnCD (talk) 19:34, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ran Raz

I have taken off the speedy-deletion tag I put on this article, but I think it still needs more to establish notability to the standard of WP:PROF, which is the relevant guideline. Read, particularly Note 1 to the section Criteria. Just having published a lot may not be enough: can you cite independent references to him, or evidence that his papers are widely-cited? Proposed deletion of Sanjeev Arora

edit

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Sanjeev Arora, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Article is simply a c.v.--also, does not appear to satisfy notability criteria for academics

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Speedy deletion of Piotr Indyk

edit

A tag has been placed on Piotr Indyk requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. ←Signed:→Mr. E. advice

edit

please see WP:PROF. As reviewing administrator, I think I have stopped the speedy deletion of some of these, but you must

  1. Write the articles in paragraphs
  2. Demonstrate notability through , usually, the impact they have on their profession. this is usually done by showing the high number of their citations to their peer-reviewed papers. This information is normally best found in Scopus or Web of Science, but some indication cn be gotten from google Scholar. In computer Science, CiteBase should also be checked, since conference proceedings can be major publications.
  3. Please look at articles for other scientists in this field to see the ay its done. There is no point in putting in articles that will be found unsatisfactory.
  4. s a general guide, full professors in major research universities will be found notable when checked. Associate professors not always, so it would be a good idea to check on publication record before doing the article. Assistant professors, very rarely.

I'd advise you to add this very quickly, before they get nominated for regular deletion. DGG (talk) 00:03, 18 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

There are also some other edits that appear to be copyright violations: For example, your additions to Model of computation contain fragments from here. Additions to Online algorithm contain fragments from here. — Miym (talk) 11:58, 21 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please do not add copyrighted material to Wikipedia without permission from the copyright holder, as you did to Arithmetic circuit complexity. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Decision tree complexity

edit

Re the article Decision tree complexity: many of the sentences in this article were the same as, or nearly the same as, sentences in the cited source. Again, this was a copyright violation. You need to write your own, different sentences. I've edited this article to remove the copyright violations. It took a fair amount of work. You can see what I did: [1]

Please don't contribute articles like that that have sentences or large parts of sentences that are the same or almost the same as another source unless we have officially recognized copyright permission from the source. I suggest that if you want to create more articles, I suggest that for the next few articles you create, that you create them at WP:Articles for creation and state clearly what sources you got them from and put a message on the talk page asking whether you've managed to avoid violating copyright, or else create them in your userspace, for example, if you want to create an article called "Example name" you could create User:Yewang315/Example name. Then, you can ask me, Moonriddengirl, or the help desk or the Drawing board whether your article seems to be free of copyright violations before you move it into article space.

It takes work to write Wikipedia articles that contain new sentences that are not based too closely on sentences in the sources. Coppertwig (talk) 18:20, 1 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
