Changing the Cornell University template box edit

Thanks, Xtreambar, for all the fine work you've done in regards to articles pertaining to Cornell University and elsewhere on Wikipedia. I had kindly changed the template box for Cornell to reflect "auxiliary" academic units that I'm writing articles about and will post shortly; that was the reason for the change :) However, your reverting of the template box is fine for now; I can change it back to my edited way after the articles are posted :-) Keep up the good work :) —Catdude 19:25, 3 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image copyright problem with Image:Circa 1910s.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Circa 1910s.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. SteinbDJ 14:11, 17 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fair use images edit

I notice that you are using a number of fair use images on User:Xtreambar/Temporary. However, please note that fair use of copyright images cannot be claimed outside mainspace articles - please could you therefore remove these? Thanks, CLW 12:29, 6 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Regardless of the purpose for which the page is being used, for copyright reasons you still can't keep those images on the user page. Perhaps you could change the image links by adding a colon after the [[, so that instead of showing the actual images, it shows a clickable link to the image such as Image:Humec03.jpg. That way you wouldn't be showing copyrighted images in your user space. Regards, CLW 15:00, 6 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for that! CLW 08:45, 7 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image Tagging Image:Risley hall, backyard.gif edit

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Risley hall, backyard.gif. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -SCEhardT 17:07, 22 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Greetings; quick question: since Wellbery is not on the faculty of Cornell, but rather was a faculty member of one summer program it offers, is it accurate to include that link at the bottom? I can't seem to find anything about a degree in 1945 for this edit. I was trying to find in what subject the Ph.D. was granted, and wonder if you know anything. —mercuryboardtalk 21:01, 31 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I forget where I found those years. Sorry. I will try to do some research, but my initial look-up has given me zip. Hmm. I wonder where I got those years... --Xtreambar 21:08, 31 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I guess leave it as-is. What I've been doing is searching "Alumnus name" "cornell" on Google and have been able to quickly identify missing pieces of information: degree, year, field of study... whatever's missing. It's not hard to do and help would be appreciated if you have any time. —mercuryboardtalk 18:38, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Ed Marinaro Sports Illustrated.jpg) edit

  This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Ed Marinaro Sports Illustrated.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image can be used under a fair use license. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Kevin 10:10, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fair-use image removed from your user page edit

Hello, Xtreambar. I've removed Image:McArthur.JPG from your user page, as it is a copyrighted, unlicensed image that is being used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. Unfortunately, by Wikipedia policies, no fair-use images can be used on user pages; please see the ninth item of the Wikipedia fair-use policy and Wikipedia:Removal of fair use images. This image has not been deleted from any articles. If you have any questions, please let me know. —Bkell (talk) 16:14, 17 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image:Weill Medical College Qatar.jpg edit

Please do not remove speedy deletion tags from articles that you have created yourself. If you do not believe the article deserves to be deleted, then please place {{hangon}} on the page and make your case on the article's talk page. Administrators will look at your reasoning before deciding what to do with the article. Thank you. —Psychonaut 20:52, 28 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image:Weill_Medical_College_Qatar.jpg listed for deletion edit

Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as Image:Weill_Medical_College_Qatar.jpg has been listed for speedy deletion because you selected a copyright license type implying some type of restricted use, such as for non-commercial use only, or for use on Wikipedia by permission. While it might seem reasonable to assume that such files can be freely used on Wikipedia, a non-profit website, this is in fact not the case. Please do not upload any more files with these restrictions on them, because content on Wikipedia needs to be compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License, which allows anyone to use it for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial.

If you created this media file and want to use it on Wikipedia, you may re-upload it, but use the license {{GFDL-self}} to license it under the GFDL, or {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, or use {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain.

If you did not create this media file but want to use it on Wikipedia, there are two ways to proceed. First, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list if you believe one of those fair use rationales applies to this file. Second, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.

If you have any questions please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you. Thatcher131 22:28, 28 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think the infobox here speaks for itself. Images have to have a free license; "for use on Wikipedia" is not good enough, according to this e-mail from Wikipedia's founder [[1]. I'm not sure exactly why, only that it is official policy that images need a free license--"for Wikipedia only" "by permission" or "for educational use only" are not allowed. One of the licenses used a lot by Flickr contributors is the Creative Commons Share and Share Alike version 2.5 license. If you contact the photographer again and he agrees to the ShareAlike license, you can upload the image again using that license, and everything will be fine. Hope this helps. Image:Schoellkopf Field Postcard.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Schoellkopf Field Postcard.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- ccwaters 00:17, 3 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
