Categories

Thanks for your note about categories. I've enabled Hotcat at Multichill's suggestion. What happens now? Is it automatic or do I select something with each upload? Like maybe the category button I've noticed on the upload page?

Maybe I can help with the En edits if you get in touch (if I've understood you).

Sardaka (talk) 09:12, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

On tools, I'm no help. I'm "not very young" and have difficulties with them more often than not (unless I decide to use something constantly and get acquainted). So, best would probably be to ask Multichill for advice, or at least, to ask him where to go for advice. If I need to grab Categories, I do it manually, beginning from a similar file which seems to be well-categorized by someone else, for a while.
I also feel unable to get en=N or en=4 speakers (there's a category for each, but it is full of folks who did not edit for months, so, no help). Therefore, if you just could find out for me HOW to "tag" an article the best way, in order to attract as proofreader, or where I should apply for such, it would be great (and I would not need to address same few persons all too much).
Last articles I worked on in enWP were Wilhelm Jerusalem, Otto Glöckel, Otto Felix Kanitz, and I would be happy to know that they are in "English", one day, rather than in "W.'s English" ;)) [on facts, you mostly would have to trust me -- I of course used German language literature and a few Websites].
On COM, I work on an article (maybe it will be a series, one for each working period) about Van Gogh, to balance the WP+COM view on him (which is all-to-much "stereotype", up to now, and focussed just on painting [as the market did, too]. His draftsmanship was highly neglected for ~118 years). You can have a look at the exposé, but it's in my private backyard until at least one part of it is somewhat ~finished (I hoped to be able to present something for Christmas, but am going to fail; you may have a look at "Early period", which is "in [slow] progress", but the rest is not even a good dummy. Do not edit there up to now, there will be too many changes before it can be published). You would however be most welcome to care about questions I've put on Commons:Category_talk:Vincent_van_Gogh#Translation:_Help_needed -- Thanks, Wolfgang (talk) 16:10, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Joyeux nouvel an

Hi Diti,
although I'm able to READ French ~ as well as EN, I switch over to en when writing:
My not very young brain seems to "store" these two languages in "completely different departments," which means that I have serious troubles to switch from en (which I recently, say ~40 years, use by far more often than my fr, which I learned a while ago by far more better than en [8:4 years ;]) to fr when writing.

For a beginning:
I wish you (and your family) a Happy_New_Year, and, to have a good time, and also with your "bachot".

Question:
I do have troubles to translate (mostly even: to understand) "argot". Would you be willing to help? I'll pass by soon.
Best, [w.] 11:01, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi! =3
Damn, I just have the time to send you a quick reply... I'll do it quick, sorry! :(
Well, I think I know the reasons when you're asking for that translation... I took time to find out the English equivalent to this word! :p
Well, argot means... slang! Happy new year! ^v^ Diti (talk to the penguin) 23:25, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
Sorry to be misunderstood: What I needed to translate, is a statement "in argot", which is: "À mon ami Vincent ce croquin bête" (caption on an Émile Bernard picture -- guess for whom? ;)

::No need to hurry, BTW: Both are dead and won't complain for having to wait, or to be misunderstood. I just wonder whether "bête" in this case rather means "animal" or "stupid", so, whether to translate

  1. ~ "this stupid bastard" or rather
  2. ~ "this bloody fool" or
You may see from the wording that they were quite good fellows, hein? Have a good time, and do not overdo WP ;) -- you're too young to start missing real life, imnsvho ;)) [w.] 10:41, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
Thisone was a misunderstanding on my part (resoved by LEO): É. Bernard obviously just referred to his own watercolour sketch as "ce croquis bête, [=this silly sketch]. --[w.] 18:55, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

BTW: In case you pass by-here some day, and are not in a hurry, and have an idea about realising following desired "design":

I'd like to have look-somewhat-a-like my personal pages on most browsers, the way I'd like to see them, which is, the image directly above the babelboxes and ~same width (when visiting a friend, recently, I found out that "image display size" may considerably differ from the one I see on my FF2 / now:FF3. I'm aware that there are "boxes" which seem to be able to compensate such, like for instance for musicians, artists, ... (variations of {{Infobox}}, I think).

I'd just want to have one picture, some caption and the babelboxes within such box, but I am not able to manage this myself. Please: Do not worry if this is not a simple thing for you, and just forget about, but maybe it is easy for someone more experienced in similar, and that's why I ask you. You might have noticed that I do not invest very much time+energy into self-portrayal on my wiki pages. [w.] 10:41, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Émile Bernard 1888-06 - Brothel Scene, for Vincent.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Émile Bernard 1888-06 - Brothel Scene, for Vincent.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:20, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Émile Bernard

Any images that were published in any form (books, postcards, magazines, anything like that) before 1923 can be tagged with this and used freely. Other than that, only paintings that are actually discussed at length in the text (see this section for a good example of a non-free image used entirely legitimately) should be used. You can see an example of this in Color Field, where Modernist has carefully included only images that are discussed in the text to illustrate specific points. Adding images basically saying "here's another picture he did" or including paintings that are mentioned only in passing is not really acceptable. I doubt that 25 images could be justified, but it's possible. If you like, I can review specific uses/images and offer my opinion on their legitimacy? J Milburn (talk) 18:42, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Sorry to tell you that you're wrong on the first link -- THAT applies to work published in the USA, not to work published in the nowadays EU.
As that Bernard is dead for a couple of years (just missing ~3 to be PD ;) I wonder whether it might be better to just wait. On the other hand, I'd prefer to edit SOMEWHAT sooner ;]]]
[Are you aware about Majestix???] (from Asterix) -- [w.] 18:57, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, it's only the U.S., but Wikipedia is hosted in the U.S., and so it counts as public domain from Wikipedia's point of view (the English Wikipedia allows content free in the U.S., as opposed to Commons, where content must be free in the U.S. and the country of origin). Yeah, I know about Majestix- I read a lot of Asterix when I was younger. What about him? J Milburn (talk) 21:38, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
Sorry to have been offline for a while -- having had troubles with my computer 8[ +going to replace it next week].
So, you are sure that I can upload to enWP any work of, say, É. Bernard created before 1923 without having to fill in that Fair-Use rationale? This would for sure make things easier. As you're obviously familiar with that "stuff", would you please give me here [brlow] the template which I should use?
[On Majestix, I referred to his standard saying which I did never read in English, it is app. "for as long as the heaven [or sky? -- is the same word like heaven, both in de and in original fr] does not fall on our heads". -- that's why I, for-myself, dislike waiting with uploads ;]]
Best, Wolfgang, from Vienna [w.] 16:29, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Hi, in case, Template:PD-US-1923-abroad does the job, just endorse. [w.] 18:32, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

File:Otto Felix Kanitz.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Otto Felix Kanitz.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. Stifle (talk) 13:49, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Beloved bot, which you probably are: I had put a Fair.Use.Rationale when uploading this file, and moreover asked at Wikipedia:Non-free content review#Image:Otto_Felix_Kanitz.jpg on 26 November 2008 whether this is sufficiant -- without any reaction, up to now. [w.] 05:37, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Moreover, see above (E. Bernard), J.Milburn is convinced that anything published before 1923 would not create any problem on enWP. How about this? [w.] 05:47, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Images on Wikipedia must have a copyright tag, and fair use images must also have a fair use rationale. Your image has a fair use rationale, but not a copyright tag, which is required by item 10b at Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria. Please add a copyright tag to the image. You'll find a list at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free. Stifle (talk) 08:12, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for informing me. I've to apaolgize, but this was not an issue during ~last 3 years: Pics declared "Fair-use" were+are accepted without an extra copyright tag. See, e.g., File:Caesar Cardini (Cesare Cardini) 1896-1956.jpg
Question: How about J Milburn's opinion and my proposal? There are a lot of highly relevant É. Bernard paintings "out there", which will be free (for upload to COM) in 2011, but would be useful to be "gathered" now. Would I be allowed to create some "É. Bernard gallery" on enWP under terms of Template:PD-US-1923-abroad (whichs content easily might be transferred to COM, at appropriate time)? [w.] 16:14, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
This has been the policy since March 2007; if some images were missed then they will be found in time and tagged. I have marked the image you pointed out as lacking a tag accordingly.
Anything published before 1923 is considered free for use in Wikipedia and can be tagged {{PD-US}} if first published in the USA, and {{PD-US-1923-abroad}} if abroad. Stifle (talk) 10:34, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:Bix Beiderbecke and Rhythm Jugglers.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Bix Beiderbecke and Rhythm Jugglers.jpg. Replacing free images with nonfree

Hello! At Léo Ferré, I noticed you replaced a free image with a nonfree one. Please note that the addition of nonfree images to an article about a person with free images is not permitted for any reason. I have replaced the nonfree image with the free one, and the nonfree will be deleted if not legitimately used elsewhere. Since you may not have been aware of this, could you please ensure to perform similar cleanup anywhere else you may have done this? Seraphimblade Talk to me 13:21, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

Dear Seraphimblade, I'm sorry to have to admit that I'm "less than aware" that relatively meaningless "free images" MUST not be replaced by non-free ones, under "fair use" policy. I am confidential that this fine community will be able to remove any inadequate item of my uploads since 2005 -- albeit to the disadvantage of "readers" or "users" of this project.
Best, &eod, [w.] 15:46, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
NB, to put things somewhat more clear: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=L%C3%A9o_Ferr%C3%A9&action=historysubmit&diff=413292769&oldid=400480872

DOT.
I'm sorry you feel that way, and in the way you put it on my talk page as well. However, this is a free content project, so free content really is a requirement. Only limited exceptions are permitted, and one absolute and non-negotiable requirement is that the nonfree content not be replaceable with free. Since you're declining to do the cleanup, I'll certainly take a look. Seraphimblade Talk to me 07:44, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Émile Bernard 1888-06 - Brothel Scene, for Vincent.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Émile Bernard 1888-06 - Brothel Scene, for Vincent.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. W., I've been as patient as I can with this, but your behavior here is not acceptable. Please consider this a final warning. Please view the nonfree content guidelines, especially #1. (And by the way, I'm not German, I'm American, and find your insinuation I'm some kind of Nazi or something highly insulting.) Do not again reinsert a nonfree image where we have any free one. The reason I've gone through your image uploads is for no more or less reason than that you stated you were categorically unwilling to do so yourself, and many of them proved to be problematic and to fail NFCC. I realize those were honest mistakes made in good faith at the time, and that it was in no way your intent to upload images inappropriately, but at this point you do know better and have been advised of the rules. I'm afraid they're not negotiable, especially replaceability. Seraphimblade Talk to me 11:09, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
Where, please, did I ever call YOU a NAZI? I just think you're somewhat narrowminded, BECAUSE I do not see any reason why this non-free image which IMO complies with enWP NFCC should be removed.
Or, do you REALLY think that this teddy-bear-like portrait on his gravestone, showing a youngster [on which you insist, but where you did not even improve on description, after resetting again, recently!] could be an "equivalent" to the rather-well-dateable press photograph of an obvious sportsman in his World Champion's jersey?
Such seems, imNSVHo, less-than-ridiculous argueing.

Que sera, sera ... ;)

Hi Seraphimblade,
let us please stick to WP:AGF.

Until recently, you were opposing my opinion, in an IMO "somewhat harsh" way. To put things more clear, I tried today to address the comunity on these issues.

Feeling to be Babel=EN~2.321 ;), I am reasonably aware of my shortcomings in this language, therefore I might have missed subtleties in WP:NFCC, but I also do think that you might have missed subtleties in my rationales on artists or sportsmen.

Let's have the community deciding -- I will not interfere any more, besides probably commenting other people's comments, for another few days.

I'd prefer your answer(s) on either Wikipedia:Media_copyright_questions#Interpretation.2C_or_possible_test_cases_concerning_WP:NFCC
(or, whatever the community prefers) Wikipedia_talk:Non-free_content_review#Interpretation.2C_or_possible_test_cases_concerning_WP:NFCC

A little note on where you will comment would be welcome, HERE. I've set the delay for archiving this page to 15d, today.

You might consider initiating a specific discussion of the image at WP:NFR. Seems the "general question" is not receiving much attention. –xenotalk 14:44, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:Émile Bernard 1888-06 - Brothel Scene, for Vincent.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Émile Bernard 1888-06 - Brothel Scene, for Vincent.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 04:52, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

TX for the information.
As of 2012, however, this reproduction of a 2dimensional work of art does not seem to be NON-free any more, according to WP&EUROPEAN_law, as its author deceased in 1941.
Not being very much involved in WP, as-of-now, I however will not "PROTEST" against deletion of this file. :Best, 81.3.214.195 (talk) 20:08, 5 January 2012 (UTC) (by other words: [w.]

Disambiguation link notification for July 13

Hi. When you recently edited Loten Namling, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Dharamsala (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

A tag has been placed on File:RB Stratos test jump - Felix Baumgartner in free fall ((c) Luke Aikins Red Bull Content Pool).jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only," "non-derivative use" or "used with permission," it has not been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. [1], and it was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19, or is not used in any articles. If you agree with the deletion, there is no need to do anything. If, however, you believe that this image may be retained on Wikipedia under one of the permitted conditions then:

  • state clearly the source of the image. If it has been copied from elsewhere on the web you should provide links to: the image itself, the page which uses it and the page which contains the license conditions.
  • add the relevant copyright tag.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. ukexpat (talk) 16:37, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
