Welcome!

Hello, TwilligToves, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. your welcome for the welcome. Don't hesitate to ask if you need any help with anything. Happy editing. Bawolff 06:29, 29 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Wow you are the first person I think I've ever welcomed whose actually became an active member of wikipedia [not including other wikimedia projects/wikinews]. I guess that's because I mostly welcome people who I see vandalize stuff, and I don't really expect that they're going to be constructive. Its nice to see such an active new contributor. Keep up the good work. Bawolff 08:11, 10 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Copy-editing

edit

Glad to see yet another "wordnerd" on Wikipedia :) Journalists provide succinctness, which is what we need. You've probably found that Wikipedia's ideal writing style is very similar to that of journalism. — Deckiller 07:09, 29 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cad Operator

edit

Don't be offended but I've reverted a couple of well-intentioned but erroneous edits you made to the article Cad Operator. You altered "despatch" to "dispatch" throughout; whilst this is the correct American-English spelling, "despatch" is the correct spelling in this context as it forms part of the title of a (British) software package. I've also reverted your changing of "active duties" to "street patrols" - these are most definitely not the same thing! (At any time the Met has around 15,000 officers on active duties, of which at most 1000 - and usually no more than 100-200 - will be on street patrols.)

I've left your {{unsourced}} marker in place as it's technically accurate. However, I only recently separated this article out of its parent article, Metcall, and all relevant citations are there; in addition, all facts are drawn from the MPS documents listed in the References section. Dear BuddingJournalist,

Do you have the time to take a look at Activism at Ohio Wesleyan University. It is a short article and an easy read. I would like somebody, better than me in copyediting, to take a look at it and improve the prose and issues that might exist. Thank you so much! I appreciate it! Katie Blair

edit

Hi... apologies for that... I didn't catch the word "adequately" when I re-added it. I've changed the wording of the whole sentence... the important point was that Blairs was the only question with an answer that was either correct or incorrect as the others were asked to give opinions on issues. I've changed the wording. -- PageantUpdatertalk | contribs | esperanza 21:02, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your message: League of Copyeditors

Hi there! I came across your edits and noticed that you do a fair amount of copy-editing. I'm a member of the League of Copyeditors, a project dedicated to managing the sizable backlog of articles needing a copy-edit. We're always looking for new members, and you'd make a great addition to the project! We've started a participation drive for the remainder of February. If you're interested, you can help clear the backlog by adopting the following goals each week: Select an article to copy-edit from the backlog. After your copy-edit, list the article in the ready for final proofread section. Select a different article to proofread from the ready for final proofread section. Thanks, and happy editing! BuddingJournalist 13:31, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Ahha! Yes, you've already explained what to do. My question: how do I best navigate to the "ready for final proofread section"? Do you keep it as a bookmark or is there an easier way? Outlook 14:45, 8 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Budding Journalist. I read your invitation to me about the League of copyeditors and I must regretfully decline. I do support the direction of the project, but I have too much on my plate right now to take on another wikiproject. If it is any consolation, I'd be happy to be a sort of unofficial ally to the project (perhaps I'll make a few edits here and there). I'd also be happy to answer any questions you have (although you seem to be pretty wiki-savvy already!). Anyway, you're off to an awesome start here, and I hope you stick around for awhile, because the project needs more editors like you. Heart of Eternity Diamond

edit

The alternation between "Heart of Eternity" and "Blue diamond" is confusing. Can you address this? It's dizzying reading one and then the other. Rintrah 08:29, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, sorry. I come to expect confusing variation in wikipedia articles; so I thought they referred to the diamond. Mea culpa. Rintrah 08:39, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think many of Fowler's ideas are outdated, but I agree with the entry on Elegant variation. I'm not really a fan of journalism. Hehe — reverse order! I think variation is valid, but not for the purpose of avoiding repetition. I think better writing should do that. My position seems to be in the minority, though. :( Rintrah 08:47, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, that might have sounded rude. I didn't mean it that way. Rintrah 08:56, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I went a different direction. I used to use the thesaurus heavily, but now I rarely, if ever, use it. Rintrah 09:09, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re thesauribus

edit

In answer to your question: yes, "thesauri". "thesuarus" is a Greek-borrowing in Latin, hence "thesauri". But "thesuaruses" is also valid, albeit less lofty. In Latin and Greek, the word means "treaure, treasury". Rintrah 12:31, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bishop of Thatcher's War Playground—I mean, the Falkland Islands

edit

I am confused by this sentence: "Bishop of the Falkland Islands is a bishopric in the Church of England, originally the ordinary of the Diocese of the Falkland Islands. Contents."—First, what does everything following the comma mean? And second, what is its syntactic relation to the rest of the sentence?

As you can see, I couldn't get past the first sentence.

By the way, my father, a British citizen, was in the Falkland islands during the Falklands war. He actually encountered Argentian troops, who treated him rather well, despite their initial suspicions. He couldn't get over how patriotic the Argentinians were, but when he came to England, he found the citizens there were worse. Rintrah 07:40, 14 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re Hand of Goal Controversy

edit

If you asked me brother, you would probably get a diatribe. I was rather amused Maradona got away with it, but the incident was long before my time.

I was upset about a match not long ago between the Socceroos and Italy in the World Cup finals, which Italy won because an Italian player took a dive in the last minute. He suddenly lost balance because he saw a Socceroos defender in front of him on the ground. So, with just enough time to plan a dive, he slowly walked into the Socceroos player and leaned forward, and lo! He fell forward, making a dramatic dive and grinning afterward. Italy successfully converted the penalty. Later, Italy won the World Cup—those spaghetti-eating bastards. Rintrah 08:03, 14 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Answer: Eddie Izzard

5. Strategic Sheep

So after World War II, the whole world was going, "Come on, Europe, give these countries back. Come on, we just had a bloody war; let's give 'em back. Britain?"
"Wha'?"
"What's that behind your back?"
"Oh, it's India and a number of other countries."
"Give 'em back."
"Oh, all right. There's that one there, and there's that one…”
“Falkland Islands?”
“Oh, we need the Falkland Islands... for strategic sheep purposes!"

Re:DYK arranging

Oops. I thought that referred to the order of the sections rather than the DYKs themselves, but now I see that there isn't really much order in the earlier dates either… Thanks for telling me though, otherwise I would probably have wasted a lot more time rearranging them. --Grimhelm 07:41, 13 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for this. Hoping you will consider extending the study to include the Barack Obama article's current experiment with unprotection which (at least so far) looks encouraging. Here's something I did that might yield a few more ideas. My snap hypothesis after reviewing this sample: We are dealing mainly with badly behaved children at play (editing in the early evening, after school, mostly from small town, USA)... play is how children learn best, and encyclopedias are for learning. So what do we teach? In this line of thinking I think maximum openness is a smart investment in the future. --HailFire 18:08, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Are you still involved with the LoCE? I haven't seen you around there in a while. Also, there has been a bit of talk about me creating a bot to automatically update the template, but again, I wanted to get your input before proceeding. edit

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Vecoli, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached.
