Question from Greenwinch (22:55, 2 June 2024)

edit

While editing articles here does it comes with citations all times? --Greenwinch (talk) 22:55, 2 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Greenwinch – I'm not certain I understand what you are asking. If you are asking if all articles must have citations, the answer is yes, under the notability guidelines articles must demonstrate that the topic has been talked about in reliable sources through citations. If instead you are asking whether all content in an article must have citations, the answer is a bit complicated. Under the verifiability policy, inline citations are required when a statement has been challenged by someone else or is likely to be challenged by someone else, as well as for direct quotes and anything potentially controversial about a living person. This means that usually yes, most material needs a citation, but in some cases they are not required. Please be aware that if an unsourced change is reverted it may not be restored without including a citation. Tollens (talk) 18:39, 3 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

How do I create a page --Sata 126 (talk) 17:32, 3 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello Sata 126! It looks like you have figured it out, but there are a couple things you should additionally be aware of if you are attempting to write a new article. On Wikipedia, all articles must demonstrate that their topic is what we call notable, meaning that it has been talked about in reliable sources. Usually this requires that at least three sources are provided in the article before a draft can be published. Additionally, articles must be written from a neutral point of view, meaning that words such as "glorious" or "illustrious" are not usually appropriate in a Wikipedia article. You might be interested in the page Help:Your first article, which has some helpful information. Tollens (talk) 18:50, 3 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Hollywood454545 (01:43, 4 June 2024)

edit

Hello, thanks for your help. So. we've been having problems with stroll that each time we create an article for our artist, the troll goes and deletes it. Could you help me create a page for the artist and help me to lock it (if there's such a thing) so this troll editor can't delete it? --Hollywood454545 (talk) 01:43, 4 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker)
Who is this "we" you are referring to? What other accounts do you have here?
Someone who has the user right to delete pages isn't a troll, but an administrator, who likely deleted the article because it was unambiguously promotional. Without knowing who the article subject is, it's impossible to investigate.
Go to WP:YFA and follow the directions. You're a paid editor, you have a conflict of interest, and the only venue available on Wikipedia for users with a conflict of interest is to create an article in draft space (or your sandbox) and submit it for review. The reviewer then decides if the draft can be published as an article. ~Anachronist (talk) 01:52, 4 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from GJYFromOz (06:59, 11 June 2024)

edit

Hi, and thanks for mentoring.

I am responding to a "Citation Needed" comment in the article on Kylea Tink. I've added an appropriate citation, but I can't seem to make it replace the "Citation Needed" text; it just appears next to it. Am I doing it wrong? --GJYFromOz (talk) 06:59, 11 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi GJYFromOz! Citation needed tags are manually placed by other editors and have to be manually removed as well. If you edit the page again, you can remove it by clicking the tag (while editing the page), then clicking the backspace key. Tollens (talk) 17:58, 11 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello! I spoke with you a few days ago at the Teahouse about using non-free images. I have another question: Can I take a screenshot from a film myself and upload it? Wafflewombat (talk) 09:32, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Wafflewombat! That would absolutely be okay. The file upload wizard will help you add the necessary copyright information. Be aware, however, that you will need to replace the image currently in the article right after uploading it, and you should tag the old image with {{Di-orphaned non-free use}} once you've done so. Question from Trutherts (04:27, 21 June 2024)

edit

Greetings!

There has been some misinformation shared about my culture/society/religion/family. If I can't remove the misinformation from the page, can I remove my family's affiliation with the page?

Kind Regards.

Mr.T --Trutherts (talk) 04:27, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Trutherts, is this related to the edit you attempted to make at Gitlaan? It looks like you were alerted to the fact that your edit removed the category tags used for article sorting (I assume you didn't see that this was part of your edit and was unintentional). As far as I can tell there were no other issues with what you were trying to do at that article. You can try making the edit again, just make sure that the category isn't removed and it should go through. Alternatively, you can tell me exactly what you want changed and I can probably make the edit on your behalf. Tollens (talk) 17:05, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

edit

Hi Sir, I'm Brian and i had a question concerning writing prompts in the search bar, could you recommend some of the best practices pls --Ipogian (talk) 11:29, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Brian, I'm not certain I understand what you're asking about, are you referring to Wikipedia's internal search bar? I can only help with Wikipedia-related questions so I will assume that's the case. If so, in most cases you can just put in the topic you are looking for, and often you will be automatically redirected to the correct page even if you didn't put in the specific title. In more complicated cases, there are a wide variety of additional filters that can be used by going to Special:Search and opening up the advanced search dropdown. There are even more tools that can be used (like regexes if you know how to use them, don't worry if you don't) that are documented at mw:Help:CirrusSearch. If I've misunderstood your question please do let me know. Tollens (talk) 06:23, 24 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Qamarwari, (Kashmiri pronunciation: [Qamarwor]) in Kashmiri, is a neighborhood in Indian-administered Srinagar of Jammu and Kashmir. It is located about 6 km north of Lal Chowk, Srinagar on Srinagar-Baramullah Highway in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian administered Kashmir . DrAshrafmath (talk) 02:53, 26 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi DrAshrafmath! You can work on a new article by creating a draft; you can do so using the article wizard. I would suggest reading through Help:Your first article before starting. Once the draft is ready, you can submit it for review and publication. Tollens (talk) 03:54, 26 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from LeanLovingWriter (21:59, 1 July 2024)

edit

Hello,

Two questions.

1. I saw that 'trusted users' can change my name. If you're a trusted user, I'd like to change my screen name to 'PoetAndPriest' from LeanLovingWriter. This wd match up with my presence on a number of social media sites, and it was what I intended here. Wd this be OK?

2. I want to add a section to a page — specifically a "THIS in Popular Culture' section to an entry that has a had a short film made of his life.

Thank you.

Paul --LeanLovingWriter (talk) 21:59, 1 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Paul!
There is a very short request form for a username change that you can fill out at Special:GlobalRenameRequest; I don't personally see any issues with your request so it will almost certainly be accepted fairly quickly (a couple days max).
You can absolutely add information like that to an article, but a new section like that is maybe not the best way to go about it unless there are multiple other things that should go there (without knowing which article specifically, it's hard to say, though; if you are able to tell me which I'll be able to help better). It would also help to know a little bit about the film: depending on the person and the film it could be argued that it isn't relevant enough to warrant a mention in the article (for example, a high-school film project about a popular celebrity would clearly not, while an award-winning documentary about a relatively unknown person clearly would, as the two extremes). Tollens (talk) 05:32, 2 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
This is the page and this is the film.
In its small pond, it has done rather well [scroll down to see the 'official selection' roster], and involved quite a project [trekking to Patmos, many interviews, currently on a kind of tour of various screenings].
Thanks for the other.
Paul LeanLovingWriter (talk) 18:12, 2 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Looking at the film and article, this would probably be okay. Please be aware that secondary sources are preferred as citations – ideally you would not simply cite the film itself but rather an article about the film if possible. If no such articles exist that's likely an indication that there shouldn't be very much written about the film in that article, though even then a line or two simply mentioning that the film was made would probably still be fine. Based on the wording you've used, it seems like you might be personally connected to this film in some way (if not, apologies, the rest of this can be ignored). If so, you would be considered to have a conflict of interest and subject to a couple of extra rules (please consider at least skimming through the guideline linked there if you believe it might apply to you). Generally editors with conflicts of interest should not edit articles directly, instead they should propose edits to the page for others to review. This can be done through the edit request wizard. Tollens (talk) 08:50, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Swell, really helpful.
Not personally connected, but have seen it, and I'm Orthodox. But I have nothing to do with it, and have never met the people who made it.
I've corrected Wikipedia articles with conflicts of interest [WB Mason, I think was one; it was clearly (or rather not so, in a sense) written by a PR person ... professionally a[n old school] journalist so yes, of course. Hate that stuff. LeanLovingWriter (talk) 13:42, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Ort2233 (16:38, 3 July 2024)

edit

Hi! I am getting started here on Wikipedia. If anything is not satisfactory please let me know. I would like to make sure I do not get myself blocked! It seems very easy to do on here. --Ort2233 (talk) 16:38, 3 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello Ort2233, and welcome to Wikipedia, your contributions so far look great, thank you very much! I hope you like it here and decide to stay! Getting blocked is really not a concern at all assuming you aren't being deliberately disruptive or ignoring/being rude to others if they raise a concern (and based on the fact that you've asked this all of those things seem awfully unlikely to me), blocks are only used to prevent ongoing harm to Wikipedia. Unfortunately many people do disrupt Wikipedia on purpose, which leads to getting blocked seem like a common thing even though it isn't for anyone who is here to contribute in a positive way like you have been doing. Other editors who might come across your edits will nearly always explain, if they think there are any issues with any of your work, and if they don't you're always welcome to ask them. I've found that the vast majority of frequent contributors here are quite understanding and polite. Tollens (talk) 08:20, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Tollens, I greatly appreciate the warm welcome! I enjoy adding to Wikipedia quite a bit, it is a wonderful hobby to have. I do not mean to add anything deliberately disruptive. I had an account 3+ years ago and my first page creation had me blocked, unfortunately - I did not know how to request to unblock, and sadly marked an end to my Wikipedia career. I understand now, and know why I was blocked, it was an embaressingly bad page, with citations from the company I had cited, making it look like a marketing shceme.
I am excited to continue making edits, and eventually build up to building pages. I have a few pages in mind that are quite significant regarding ultrarunning (what I have been focusing on here), as some runners that have made large breakthroughs somehow already are not here! I think there is great opperunity to expand on it, since the sport is growing so rapidly.
If you or anyone else ever see any mistakes, or have suggestions, I am happy to talk about it, and keep improving,
Ort2233. Ort2233 (talk) 20:48, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from AniruddhaDas2001 (20:11, 3 July 2024)

edit

Hi Tollens. Is there any mechanism whereby recent edits get flagged, or looked at? And either modified or be the basis for a conversation with the person who made the edit in case there's a concern?

Or is it just left to chance that someone else may see the edit?

Thanks.. --AniruddhaDas2001 (talk) 20:11, 3 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi AniruddhaDas2001! All of the things you mention there are true. Special:RecentChanges is a live-updating list of every individual edit made to any page – many editors patrol this list, with the help of tools which help predict how likely it is for a given edit to be constructive. Every editor can also have a personal watchlist of pages where they would like to be notified each time an edit is made there so that they can review those edits. Random chance is of course also a factor as well. Any of these things could lead to completely undoing a particular edit, changing it, or talking about it with the editor and anyone else interested, if anyone has any issues with the change. One of the biggest advantages in the work verifying Wikipedia's content is the sheer number of people who do contribute (as of writing this, 114,893 people edited Wikipedia in the last 30 days) – even for relatively niche articles there are often a fairly large number of people watching the page as described above: as one potential example you might have been thinking about, Principal component analysis has 648 people watching the page, 13 of them checking the page recently.
