SA: Exchange rate policy

edit

An exchange rate policy outline the position that a government has adopted in relation to exchange its own currency with other currencies. South Africa used to have a dual exchange rate system. This means that the currency had two currencies which were used for exchange purposes. One was called the Financial Rand or Finrand and the other was called the Commercial Rand. The Finrand was introduced in 1961 as an incentive at attract foreign investors and to prevent money from leaving the country. Investors wishing to bring money into the country got a more favourable rate of exchange with the Finrand than they would have the Commercial Rand.

In March 1995 the Finrand was scrapped as it was no longer necessary to attract foreign investment. The government is now being pressurised by business to lift all remaining exchange controls, including the limit on the amount of money that can leave the country.
