RE:MOSNUM

I am not the best person to discuss the minutiae of the MOS I'm afraid. I locked the page because ti was the subject of an ongoing edit war which itself has ended up at ARBCOM. It seems that your request does not yet have consensus to be added onto the page yet, for a start, User:Tony1 has replied less than positively. I suggest you let the discussion go on for a little bit before outting in an {{editprotected}} request which is the standard thing to do if a page is protected and you want to edit it.

On a sidenote, why is this page an archive? I strongly suggest that you have your actual talkpage as the main area for discussion. This would mean you gain from the "new messages" bar at the very least, and it wouldn't be confusing for editors. This is regarding my redirect to a fresh archive from my talk page. Have you ever tried to look up something you left on somebody's talk page only to find yourself, with a link to an archived subsection, needing to search through dozens of archives? I have and it is a frustrating task that nearly crashes my computer. So I thought, "How can we both maintain an ongoing archive system and ensure that the link people have in their contributions will permanently take them to the right discussion?" If I redirect my talk page to a subdirectory that has my current archive and merely change the re-direct address when the page starts to tell me, "It takes xx bytes to load this page, maybe you should archive....", all links to that page will be to the permanent address. I do lose out on the "New messages" thing, which is unfortunate to me, but I thought I was being more mindful of everyone else. :)--Thecurran (talk) 19:55, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

On the subject of my talk page redirecting to an archive, I usually do not need to be notified in real time when someone writes on my talk page so I don't mind losing the warnings. I love the ability however to have a permanent link to any specific conversation I have participated in. I have spent dozens of hours sifting through user archives and article archives trying to find the point to which users have referred. It is even difficult finding what I wrote when I know the date from My Contributions because many archives are not dated but numbered and many are so large they take forever to load. Now, anyone that talks to me has a permanent link to that wikt:convo on their User Contributions page. As soon as i get an edit size warning on my talk page, I can make a new archive. List of country subdivisions

Hello Thecurran, do you really think this article is a good idea? You are just getting started, with less than 100 entries in the table, and the article is already about 16,000 bytes long. There are over 3000 first-level administrative divisions in the world, so I don't think this approach is scalable. There is already the Table of administrative divisions by country page, which is the top of the hierarchy of all the per-nation articles on administrative divisions. I don't see a need to duplicate that information in a single list. Perhaps you should reconsider. What problem are you trying to solve? Thanks, — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 21:44, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I do think this article is a good idea. It allows side-by-side comparisons of subdivisions of different countries. Table of administrative divisions by country seems to count the number of subdivisions, without actually listing most of them. It is useful and concise but only a handful of provinces, etc. are on it. I did not create this page but I am trying to make it into a useful list. I think it would be useful to compare the population or size of Ontario to that of Illinois, to expand upon [[Category:Ranked lists of country subdivisions]], and to solve the problem of people consistently confusing AU-WA with US-WA, etc.. I think it would be particularly pertinent when applied to the European Union as constituencies that are represented alongside of each other in votes can often be in different countries like in UEFA. I do hope that it is not just a waste of space and I do have good intentions. I would feel disappointed if I had to revert all of it but I would be willing to do so if that is what you and some other admins want. Ok - well then since you don't mind - I am wondering, is there any plan within this ISO xxxx project to add categories to these redirect pages? I added Category:Redirects from alternative names and Category:Redirects from abbreviations, but it seems like it might be more appropriate to have new categories to indicate that those pages are ISO codes. Edit questioned

This edit looks questionable. I haven't reverted it, but it looks oversimplified and possibly incorrect.

The Commonwealth of Nations article says, "... These aspects to the relationship were eventually formalised by the Statute of Westminster in 1931 (Australia, New Zealand and Newfoundland had to ratify the statute for it to come into effect; which Newfoundland never did and Australia and New Zealand did in 1942 and 1947 respectively). The word British was dropped when the modern Commonwealth of Nations was formed in April 1949, after the London Declaration."

The Australia article says, "Britain's Statute of Westminster 1931 formally ended most of the constitutional links between Australia and the UK. Australia adopted it in 1942, but backdated it to the beginning of World War II to confirm the validity of legislation passed by the Australian Parliament during the war."

The Canada article says, "Canada is also a constitutional monarchy, with The Crown acting as a symbolic or ceremonial executive.[81][82] The Crown consists of Queen Elizabeth II (legal head of state) and her appointed viceroys, the governor general (acting head of state), and provincial lieutenant-governors, who perform most of the monarch's ceremonial roles."

The New Zealand article says, "Queen Elizabeth II is the head of state and is titled Queen of New Zealand under the Royal Titles Act 1974. She is represented by the Governor-General, whom she appoints on the exclusive advice of the Prime Minister. The current Governor-General is Anand Satyanand."

TooCuteForWikipedia

Hi. Well, there *is* such a thing as text that is "non-encyclopedic" or with tone that is "inappropriate for wikipedia". This is is exhaustively explained somewhere among the 1,423,557 pages of the Wikpedia Manual of Style and Policies, but I have long forgotten where exactly. Try searching for "What Wkipedia is not", and good luck. But, basically, Wikipedia must not contain anything vaguely resembling humor. Even when discussing comedy and comical literature, one must use the same tone one would use to describe a dissected frog or the classification of basalt rocks. After all, "original humor" (like the CamelCase cartoon, I'm afraid) can be considered a form of "original research" --- another WikiHeresy. To begin with, I agree that the notation I followed too closely resembled WP:OR, so I will leave well enough alone. On the other hand, I disagree with the statements "Wikipedia must not contain anything vaguely resembling humor" & "Such things are not allowed in WP, not even on User: pages". Please do not take offence but the only humorous WP page that specifically addresses humour on WP that I know of to give as evidence is WP:WITCH. I apologize for not having a more appropriate repertoire of WP:MOS.

Flag templates

Please follow the conventions of Wikipedia:WikiProject Flag Template when creating new country data templates. The template name must match the value of the alias value, and we only have redirect aliases for ISO 3166-1 entries, not for ISO 3166-2. Thank you for updating your entry on the above page to show you visited!

I have renumbered the current requests list: the request's number will remain the same - otherwise, there are problems if someone on the older requests visits - for example, ThinkBlue visited the page today - and they are number 7... where do they go?

A request keeping the same number all the time means that people on the older requests list can just move their entry to the current requests list in numerical order without having to re-number all the entries. All new requests will just use the next number in sequence (for example, if NoSuchUser decided to add their name to the list, they would use number 123.

In that way, even if people's requests are removed (either because they start coaching, or no longer want it), although there will be gaps, no one needs to renumber any requests.

I have also proposed that anyone who does not visit the page in 6 months will have their request removed. If you want to comment on this, please feel free to comment here. Alternatively feel free to contact me!

I thought I'd better let you know - I didn't want you to think that I'd renumbered it for the sake of it, there is logic there!
