Wikipedia Redlinks edit

I reverted your edit to restore the Wikipedia:Red link at World War II Casualties. That redlink is a flag to alert editors that an article on that subject does not exist on Wikipedia and that we may need to create one. Last year I made a similar edit to remove a redlink and was reverted by another editor. Regards--Woogie10w (talk) 19:02, 2 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wow... edit

That edit of mine that you reverted, I can't believe it... I clicked the revert button at the same time as Tommy, and apparently, I reverted him. :) Hi878 (talk) 03:38, 12 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

MRPICKLE1234 edit

Listen, I'm sorry about what I did. I just wanted you to know that my article wasn't worthy of deletion. I'm an amatuer film historian and I'm sure that there are many where that came from. So to delete such a historical page (it's from 1927) is really what I was not looking forward to. I hope we are equal that I just wanted to make my point across. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MRPICKLE1234 (talkcontribs) 00:02, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thank's for the advice! I signed my message here. Oh, and I really like Wikipedia! It's always cool to know facts: AND tell the world ABOUT facts. I decided to add that page because that cartoon (a historical one, too!) wasn't on Wikipedia. So I added it and one more! Oh, and I forgive your "bloodthirsty-ness". It's okay, but I got furious when a historical cartoon was up for deletion. It's okay, I forgive you, but I just had a litte hurricane of anger a little while ago. Nothing personal, just plain able-to-be-cooled-off anger. I'm glad you forgive me, and I would be glad to contribute for more about these historical cartoons. I invite you to see them, too! If you want, you can go to YouTube.com and search for "Oswald The Lucky Rabbit". That way, you CAN know at least SOMETING about this and delete the claim about you knowing nothing about the subject. Plus, the cartoons are funny. Catch ya later; --MRPICKLE1234 (talk) 01:55, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, the cartoons are funny! They are a little old, and maybe not in the best of condition, but they are still funny! If you are wondering who the characters are: Oswald's girlfriend's name is Fanny. Later changed to Sadie, but for now it's Fanny. Oswald The Lucky Rabbit also got his own candy bar in April of 1928. I hope they haven't melted by now! "CRUNCH" Oh, and they had a stencil set and more! If you want to see some of that, try "Oswald The Lucky Rabbit merchandise" on Google Images. Works for me! See you soon; --MRPICKLE1234 (talk) 02:07, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Reviewer granted edit

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:20, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Apologies for the creation of the article. I realised afterwards that I had made a typo and as such replaced the article with Echoes (Klaxons song), so the deletion should indeed go ahead as planned. Apologies again for the inconvinience. Sllewellyn7 (talk) 20:35, 17 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Not A7 edit

Unfortunately, this edit isn't right; it's not A7. I tagged the article after you, with {{delete}}; unfortunately there's no CSD for these, despite multiple attempts at the talk page to create one. — Timneu22 · talk 00:50, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, why not just use WP:CSD/IAR? It's obviously not encyclopedic, even though it doesn't fall neatly into one CSD category. The Blade of the Northern Lights (talk) 00:51, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I tagged it with {{delete}} and said "just WP:IAR," so we're thinking the same way. But there's no clear CSD. — Timneu22 · talk 00:53, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I like when things happen that way. Great minds do think alike, don't they? The Blade of the Northern Lights (talk) 00:54, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Truly great minds would get a valid ESSAY or HOWTO reason for CSD. ;) I've tried to no avail. Later dude, have a good one. — Timneu22 · talk 00:58, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
You too; in a few days, I'll create a subpage to write a WP:CSD/IAR. The Blade of the Northern Lights (talk) 01:21, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
By the way, here's the rejected "A11" for how-to:
A11. Recently created articles written in second-person style that include instructions about how to do something.
A recently created article that answers a "how do I" question, where the article does not contain any encyclopedic information that is not already included in relevant articles. Articles titled with instructional titles, such as "how to do X", are unencyclopedic and inherently lend themselves to WP:POV. Other articles with content that is written in an instructional style are also eligible for deletion. Articles that discuss techniques of performing scientific or other notable endeavors (Methods of detecting extrasolar planets), or proper titles of works (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days) do not fall under this criterion.
Timneu22 · talk 13:21, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, that would cover a lot of the pages I run across- my favorite was "How to survive if different types of zoo animals break loose" or some other horrible name like that. Not only would this help catch articles like this, it would also help some things that could actually be notable, but full of OR, get deleted for the right reason (OR, not non-notability) to avoid the chilling effect A7 frequently has. The Blade of the Northern Lights (talk) 13:32, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
"How to survive if different types of zoo animals break loose" = funniest thing I've read in a week. — Timneu22 · talk 13:35, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
IAR is not an accepted reason for speedy. I changed it to proposed deletion. Nor should there be--speedy is an arbitrary process, and we admins using it need to follow strict guidelines--they tend to use them over-broadly as it is. DGG ( talk ) 01:53, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Admins delete pure shit like this article all the time using IAR. Why waste people's time? This is absolute nonsense. WTF — Timneu22 · talk 10:45, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Blade,

I just stumbled across your talk page randomly and happen to think your greeting is some seriously funny shit; useful too. I was wondering, would you mind if I copied it to a user sub-page of mine so that I might use it once I become more established as an editor? (with proper credit and citations of course :)) Cheers! • You know, just for the hell of it, I went and reviewed the Recall and Herostratus' contribs... It's a shame... He was, if nothing else one of the most honest editors I've run across; quite a complement these days. Well I appreciate the offer, honestly, it's always useful to know someone whose familiar with the inner workings of Wikipedia as I find myself easily lost in the mind-numbing, and oft-times pointless, bureaucracy of it all. If I may, I might list you as as Consiglieré (off the record of course, (chuckle). As for your talk page,... you know,.. I must've stumbled across it from this Diff. I posted a quick Thank You to Jimbo for a confidential favor, and from the conversation, I looked at the Contrib logs of User:Njsustain and User:Griswaldo on the random suspicion of WP:Sock vio. Didn't pan out; .DUCK... What're ya gonna do right? But somehow I noticed a post you made regarding you're "relaxed" ;) attitude towards WP:Civil, and I agreed with it, perhaps for different reasons but... whatever? In the end I saw the notice on your talk page and, indeed, "Thought it was funny as shit". But I digress: it's refreshing to find neighborly people in this vast, empty, rough-electronic-equivalent of socialism (Let's be honest). Pleased to know Ya! And reciprocally, if there's ever a favor I can do to make your job easier feel free to ask anytime. Cheers! Cwill151 (talk) 07:37, 27 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Tedious as the capitalization of Ddog Nnames might sound, I believe you when you say it's tougher than one might think. Though admittedly different in scope, IIRC there was an ARBCOM case awhile back about capitalization of "God" and "He" when in reference to deities (but let's be honest the problem mostly dealt with references to Jesus). People tend to get bent out of shape over nothing, which is fine with me, I mean... everyone has to care about something', right? But -my sympathies, for the fact that you're stuck holding the mop on this one, especially on something so otherwise trivial. Although, out of curiosity... dog names like: fido or rover, or are you talking about say: Canis lupus familiaris? Though your work on the "Geisha" Article seems worthwhile and yes, rather difficult. Well just offhand I did a little research myself on Autobiography of a Geisha and Sayo Masuda, I found these links were pretty informative [1], [2], though you may have already seen them. It looks like you have at least a basic understanding of Kanji; there are several blogs in Japanese which document the book and life of Sayo Masuda and some appear to be academic. I think it's possible to cite blogs in this case as they would be Japanese sources and most relevant information in Japan is housed in blogs. IIRC I think there is a codicil in the Japanese Wikipedia to that effect; could check that out. As for me I spend/spent most of my time on ITN and around that area, I tend to feel more like a reporter in this job: to wit, at ITN you essentially get "assigned" a story and you have to work on a clock to make it good enough for the Main Page. Ha!, never gets boring. Plus there's the added dose of Wiki-crack that comes with having most of the articles you write on MP so they can get anywhere from 50,000 to several hundred thousand page views in their first week. Though, I've sort of been wandering the past few days after the mess with this article. As a result of the Troktiko shutdown, a few posts I made to the Greek Wikipedia and some details about case, well... stewards had to become involved, it was just a mess. Kinda similar to User:Herostratus. But I guess those things happen, and that's probably why I found your template so appealing. As I said if I can ever help, feel free to ask anytime and I look forward to working with you in the future. Cheers! Cwill151 (talk) 22:26, 27 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Question edit

Hey Blade I have a question for you.

When you say you know your way around WP, do you mean in a bureaucratic or a technical way? See, I ask because I've an idea on how to improve the factual accuracy of WP:ITN but it involves template formatting and a little cross-wiki interaction, both things I am not schooled in. Would you know anything about that? Also, I know that you have an interest in history, and while not necessarily historical in the same vein as Sayo Masuda, I'm attempting to get FA status for Omar al-Bashir (current "president" of Sudan). I already got feedback from a peer review which was mostly positive (lots of little technical things) and if you wanted to help out at some point I would be more than happy to split the FA credit should it get accepted. Anyway, just a few random thoughts, but you seem busy taking care of the argument so if you don't feel like it, that's cool too. At any rate don't let that sissy motherfucker get in your face. Cheers! Cwill151 (talk) 04:56, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

My Idea, the one necessitating templates, is this: Most of the stories either posted, nominated or blurbed on WP:ITN are stories dealing with foreign countries or policies of foreign governments (Foreign in the sense of countries not the U.S. or the U.K.), and while we strive to check our facts by sourcing, sometimes even the international media does not give a clear picture of the situation. Given that, I was wondering if it would be possible/feasible to compile a list of editors from different language versions of WP that are bilingual in English so that we could ask them directly and clear up common misconceptions of stories before they get posted.
Something of a wild idea I'll admit, but you can see an example of this under the nomination of the Bullfighting Ban in Catalonia. MickMacNee posted the info that several municipalities in Spain had already banned the sport, (sounds true, but hard to check), but a user named Vilar posted that indeed it is not quite true as (other than the Canary Islands) there are Anti-Bullfighting Cities, but not formal bans. His user page says he is actually from Spain and therefore he is most probably correct in this matter. To wit: if we had access to editors from different countries who were bilingual in English, then we could instantly check the accuracy of any story first-hand; not as an article writing tool, merely as a fact-checking mechanism.

Would this be at all possible or even advisable? It could certainly help us find sources on less-then-covered stories and would open up a new route for cross-wiki interaction. Thoughts? Cwill151 (talk) 17:52, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Most Castellànos don't. But since the death of Francisco Franco in the 1970's, the entrance and growth of democratic Spanish economy in the common market in the 80's, and the ethnic expansion in Europe in the 90's and 2000's due to the travel de-regulation under the the E.U. there has been an influx of emigrès and tourists in Spain. Historically the Spaniards defended Bullfighting as a sport, but unfortunately a large part of the Spanish GDP is made from recent immigrants and tourists who come from cultures that consider it a form of cruelty. That's why there are Anti-Bullfighting Cities but not formal bans (until now apparently). You can't host a spectator sport if you can't pull a profit... Cwill151 (talk) 18:59, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

In regards to the idea above, it involves cross-wiki interaction... do you know any stewards or high-ranking admins who could make this possible? Cwill151 (talk) 21:55, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • I know HJ Mitchell well as I work with him often at ITN, in fact he was the first person I approached with the idea, indeed:
"Interesting idea. I'm afraid I'm embarrassingly monolingual, though I did manage a Google-translated post on a talk page on the Swedish WP. Because of the sheer size of enwiki, there are a fair number of editors who speak other languages. If people are willing to go cross-wiki and ask people, I suppose it could work, though a quick look at local sources for most countries should confirm or deny whatever we needed to know. As to the Catalonian bull fighting ban specifically, I believe it's the first such ban in mainland Spain and that's what I wrote in the Wikinews article. It's what the BBC and various other sources are saying. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:23, 29 July 2010 (UTC)"Reply
However, thanks a lot for the info on the others. HJ is a busy guy, and while he would be the best person to help us, I'm thinking it would be more appropriate to canvass a little for the proper technical know-how, project familiarity and planning before we present him with a formal request. I'll get on the others for a comment tomorrow. Cwill151 (talk) 06:01, 30 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Technically speaking, the image I have in my head is fairly simple. Basically an admin would create a redirect link that they would then place in a template on WP:ITN/C which would lead to essentially a talk page for A Story. Except the page would be cross-wiki accessible so that editors in other languages would be able to post there from their respective Wiki's. That way any story from a foreign country that had a lack of English coverage or was vague and abstract could be cleared up in minutes simply by posting an RfC on it's talk page and asking native editors for local sources or background knowledge. I know the word "portal" has a different meaning at WP, but where I'm from it means a live communications link in-page... something like that. After the programming involved, it would be a simple matter of sending out a general request to the other wiki's for editors who are bilingual and willing to contribute to Wikipedia.en. Hell, they'd even have an incentive since once the article was finished they could just port it to their wiki and claim local credit for it! Imagine: we could have Chinese sources suggested and interpreted by users who actually speak Chinese. The same goes for any language... we'd never miss a beat again either in nominations or in the articles themselves.
Also User:Physchim62 is a well traveled admin and is from Catalonia. He might also be sympathetic to this kind of idea...
Plus this seems to fit Jimbo's general ideology of collaboration as it has the potential to foster a global dialogue, many languages, many cultures, all toward the end of producing an accurate and reliable encyclopedia. But that's just my take and Jimbo might not see it that way... Cheers! Cwill151 (talk) 06:15, 30 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Yes, they all look like people in a position to act on this type of matter. I'll try contacting them soon to see if they would be willing/able to help. BTW you weren't kidding when you said you had connections! You've glad-handed many outstanding Wikipedians since March the 5, what's you're secret? Cwill151 (talk) 18:39, 30 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Canvassing... yeah I'll admit it. edit

Hey Blade,

I currently have a nomination at WP:ITN/C ostensibly regarding the discovery of the "Cell of Origin" of Prostate Cancer. Being that my entire education has revolved around medicine and especially cancer research I feel that this story merits ITN placement. However, in terms of news, it's not exactly front page. If you have the time, and the inclination, I wonder if you would just take a look at the material in a objective manner and the current votes. You can vote however you like, but a clear consensus is lacking.

P.S. Far be it from me to betray the trust of a colleague of mine, therefore if my request is unsavory, I will delete it forthwith and will not attempt to solicit again. Regards, Cheers! Cwill151 (talk) 22:14, 2 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Detective Molly edit

Please note that I have declined your speedy deletion request of Detective Molly under CSD G3 as an obvious hoax. Although it seems unlikiely to me that the subject of the article Dan Shulman is the author of family movies, this doesn't mean that there isn't some other person by the same name who is. Speedy deletion converted to PROD: Skeleton creek book edit

Hello The Blade of the Northern Lights. Just thought I'd pass the word along. Thanks for tagging! GorillaWarfare talk 05:03, 4 September 2010 (UTC)   Hello. You have a new message at GorillaWarfare's talk page.Reply

I'm the one who put the above page up for CSD. I included the correct rationale, which had nothing to do with vandalism. Unfortunately, the admin who did the delete didn't get the joke and changed the CSD code to vandalism. The reason I asked for the delete is the "shortcut" was intended for use on WP:ABF, however, the length of it destroyed the formatting in the title box on that page. I fixed the problem by changing the shortcut to WP:PROVEBEYOND-ALLREASONABLEDOUBT-TOABUNCHOFANGRYUSERS-YOUAREACTINGINGOODFAITH, which provides the proper line breaks. When I tried to move WP:PROVEBEYONDALLREASONABLEDOUBTTOABUNCHOFANGRYUSERSYOUAREACTINGINGOODFAITH to WP:PROVEBEYOND-ALLREASONABLEDOUBT-TOABUNCHOFANGRYUSERS-YOUAREACTINGINGOODFAITH, the operation triggered a blacklisted regular expression. Not being terribly surprised by this, I recreated the page with the new name and put the old one up for CSD. I don't see much reason to keep WP:PROVEBEYONDALLREASONABLEDOUBTTOABUNCHOFANGRYUSERSYOUAREACTINGINGOODFAITH around at this point. Sorry for any confusion. —UncleDouggie (talk) 05:00, 8 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Perished vs Killed edit

Dear The Blade of the Northern Lights, I have noticed that you replaced Perished with Killed in the Turkology article, and I understand your intent to avoid euphemisms, but I would also like to bring your attention to the difference that the phrasing contains: upon execution, you can receive the body, organize funerals, have funeral rites, and a grave to grieve. Upon perishment, a person evaporates, there is no grave, no death certificate, no physical remains, no trace, your inquiries are fruitless. In that respect, to disappear is much worse then to be killed, and that was implied in the WP phrasing and directly stated in the source listings. Sorry that my feedback is so much late. Regards, Barefact (talk) 14:27, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

So have you marked it for deletion under the new category?

Rollback edit

I have granted rollback rights to your account; the reason for this is that after a review of some of your contributions, I believe you can be trusted to use rollback correctly, and for its intended usage of reverting vandalism, and that you will not abuse it by reverting good-faith edits or to revert-war. For information on rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback and Wikipedia:Rollback feature. If you do not want rollback, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Good luck and thanks. Speedy deletion declined: It's Always Stormy In Tillamook edit

Hello The Blade of the Northern Lights, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of It's Always Stormy In Tillamook, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Artist is notable, and has an article. You may wish to review the Criteria for Speedy Deletion before tagging further pages. Thank you. Dabomb87 (talk) 20:54, 2 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have no problem if you wish to PROD it, though. Dabomb87 (talk) 20:55, 2 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I should I use PROD to mark it for deletion?

Also, your signature tells me nothing, it's just "Blade of the Northern Lights" followed be some wierd asian-style characters.

GoogleUnderscore edit

Just an FYI, but it looks like GoogleUnderscore has a facination with PirateCrackK as their first 2 edits were to the talk page and the user's page. 3rd edit was to report to WP:ANI. I smell a Alt Account or a SP/MP going on here. Hasteur (talk) 16:09, 13 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
