Horrible damage

edit

Please read my posts regarding the horrible damage you have inflicted upon the Welcomecreation page.

Read them right now. Then revert the changes you made.

You have no idea how much garbage gets generated. If you provide everyone with a quick-and-easy 'generate your own page' button, then that removes yet another barrier to the spewing of raw sewage directly onto the database.

With your addition, it will become several hundred times more difficult to find and remove inappropriate material. I expect you to help locate any further needles in the vastly augmented haystack you have made possible. DS (talk) 23:30, 25 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your post. I am sorry for any inconvenience that I have created. Do you know of any way to solve this besides reverting the page (which, as you can see below, has already happened)? Would making changes to the version of the Welcomecreation page help? Would alerting people beforehand help? (In that case, where?)
I will join in the discussion on the admins noticeboard to try and sort this out. Best wishes//SvHannibal (talk) 19:32, 26 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

MediaWiki:Welcomecreation

edit

Hi, Hannibal. I realise you're working on a WMF project and everything, but I've reverted your edits to MediaWiki:Welcomecreation because the constant creation of new userpages makes much more difficult to patrol the creation of userpages for problematic content. I understand the intentions and purpose of your changes but I think that the complications that your idea presents doesn't outweigh the problems it would cause -- DragonflySixtyseven is probably the most productive new page patroller out there, and knowing what sort of stuff he weeds out, if he says that it will cause havoc, I'm inclined to revert for now. I'm not blanket-opposing such a feature, merely it should be discussed beforehand with users who patrol new userpages to reach a position that is mutually acceptable. Thanks. No hard feelings, whatsoever. I have responded on the admins' noticeboard and hope that we can find a solution together.//SvHannibal (talk) 19:52, 26 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Success

edit

OK, so (after remembering something on Wikinews), I have a way to make the "MediaWiki:Customusertemplate ..." heading disappear.

First, add this to MediaWiki:Common.js:

 // use [[User:TheFearow]]'s perpage css/js code. Includes [[MediaWiki:common.css/PAGENAME]] and [[MediaWiki:common.js/PAGENAME]]
 importStylesheet("MediaWiki:Common.css/" + wgPageName);
 importScript("MediaWiki:Common.js/" + wgPageName);

Then, make a subpage of MediaWiki:Common.css (.css, not .js this time) for each page you want the title to disappear on, with the content:

#firstHeading {display:none;}

Example: create MediaWiki:Common.css/MediaWiki:Customusertemplate-ACP1:Fancycaptcha-createaccount with #firstHeading {display:none;} to hide the "MediaWiki:Customusertemplate-ACP1:Fancycaptcha-createaccount" title on MediaWiki:Customusertemplate-ACP1:Fancycaptcha-createaccount.

The only downside is that this method involves creating a ton of subpages, but it does work. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 01:56, 3 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Great. As always. Thank you. I'll better get on it.//Hannibal (talk) 20:10, 3 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
When I entered the code for the .js page, the apostrophe in the explanation, the text turned red. I guess that means that it reads it lika hyperlink or something like that. Is that the way it was intended?//Hannibal (talk) 20:27, 3 June 2011 (UTC) Sorry, that was my mistake. I pasted it in the wrong place.//Hannibal (talk) 20:32, 3 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please discuss changes you make to Common.js on it's talkpage before implementing them. This one was a terrible idea. There are only about 4 warning banners that tell you to discuss before making changes. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 22:02, 3 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I certainly meant no harm. As you can see above, it was Fetchcomms' code, but it was I who pasted it in there, assuming that this was one of the few subpages to common.js and common.css. And in the future I will put things on the talk page first. Well, now that we have your attention... do you have another solution to get the same result? My guess would be that we make common.js make inivisible the titles of all pages that begin with an even longer name, but is that feasible? Best wishes//Hannibal (talk) 22:13, 3 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Is this only for "MediaWiki:Customusertemplate-*" ? In that case I would say, add a conditional loader in Common.js. Then load MediaWiki:Common.css/ACP.css. Put the CSS in there. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 22:27, 3 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
More discussion here. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 22:39, 3 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

ACP

edit

Hi!

I wanted to give some feedback about the project, but it was really difficult to find where I should do that. So, I'll post my comments here (and you can redirect me to a more appropriated page, if necessary).

Helder 13:13, 4 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello,
Thanks for your feedback. They're really helpful comments. Let me quickly respond and hope that better minds than my own can complete my answers:
  • this version (ACP1) is still only in "test mode". That means that it lacks some of the functionalities of the normal signup process, including the secure server. While we designed this, we focused on first getting it to work at all, and then improve the content and looks. Anything else could wait until we got the results. If and when ACP1 or any of the others have been tested enough to yield a good result (inspire more people to start making more than five edits), we will replace the old one with a version that is measurable better. It could be ACP1, but it can also be something else. That "winning" version will have the secure server function, I'm sure.
  • placeholder attributes is a good idea that perhaps can solve one of the problems that we're having, and I hope that we can figure out a way to get that function. But I am not very good with wiki-code, so let me ask some people who are and get back to you.
Keep those ideas coming. Best wishes//Hannibal (talk) 13:33, 4 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
I could implement the placeholder attribute if I had a clean and simple way of checking if the browser have support for it. Sertion (talk) 23:24, 4 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
I suppose this plugin may help: /resources/jquery/jquery.placeholder.js. Helder 01:11, 5 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Misleading boilerplate text in user pages

edit

Hello! Thanks for your work on ACIP.

I've noticed (and I'm clearly not the first), that many users are leaving the boilerplate text in their auto-created user pages, which means not only that the user page is misleading, but also that the interface is not working as intended, and that the new users are not even reading their new user pages. For more discussion, please see here, and also the earlier discussions here and here

Could something please be done to stop this from happening? The current state of affairs is clearly less than optimal. -- The Anome (talk) 12:32, 17 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Update: I've edited MediaWiki:Common.js to remove the words in question, hopefully without breaking anything else. -- The Anome (talk) 18:19, 17 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your kind words. The reason the boilerplate text was there, was to inspire people to write something about themselves and to show them what kind of information they could enter. I know there's been some problems with that, and I'll gladly test your version for a while to see if that improves things. I do hope that people will still write things there. Another thing we could do is to make the text vanish as they click on it. Let's test that as well.//Hannibal (talk) 23:23, 17 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Or make the command button deactivated until the user has actually changed the text in the text box? Fut.Perf. 08:25, 18 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
I don't know if that possible without technical support from the Wikimedia Foundation, but if it is, we should definitely test that as well. Good suggestion.//Hannibal (talk) 13:08, 18 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Should be possible, since apparently we local admins can modify MediaWiki:Common.js. We'd just need to find an admin with .js skills. I'm not a big programmer, but apparently the <textarea> input box element has an "onChange""onKeyPress" event to which one can attach a script function. That function could compare the current value of the textarea with the default value, and switch the "activated" status of the submit button accordingly. Proposal to remove remaining unedited bolierplate from auto-generated user pages

edit

I'm proposing to remove the remaining unedited boilerplate text from those user pages that it was left in, limited to just removing the bit about snakes etc. where left unedited by the user, and leaving everything else on the user page. This will be accompanied by a non-bitey edit comment, and also a friendly message on the user's talk page, letting them know that they can write something on their user page to improve it. This should remove the confusing/misleading text from around 9000 user pages, and hopefully also help those users who are still editing here engage a bit more with the community.

Can you tell me whether that seems reasonable? -- The Anome (talk) 10:44, 19 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

This is a very good suggestion! It means renewed contact with many new users in an efficient manner, which increases the chances of them returning. I like it very much.
So how about we draft the text that goes on their user pages right here? My first draft for the message on the talk page(and please feel free to improve it):

Hello,

We have noticed that you simply used the boilerplate text about yourself on your user page. We think you will have an easier time finding things to do on Wikipedia (adding text, adding images, check for typos, etc) if you write a short presentation about yourself. We're not looking for you to divulge everything about you - we just want to help you find some articles that need your help. Click here to start add some information about yourself.

All the best from the other Wikipedians through ~~~~

Article creation & review interfaces

edit

I suppose you're aware, but I'm letting you know anyway that there's a WMF drive to revamp another core function (at mw:Article creation workflow), the article creation interface, in tandem with revamping the new-article patrol/review interface (at mw:New Page Triage it seems). That's a much tougher aspect to get right [I think] because it involves not only human-computer interaction, but also human-human interaction, i.e. writer-reviewer.

There are two de facto models here: the "normal" one where articles are created in main article space (perhaps staged in user-space first), and if they turn out unsuitable in main space they are deleted (through a three-pronged process CSD/PROD/AfD of increasing complexity and number of people needed to ascertain consensus), and there's another [pilot] article creation process at WP:AFC where articles are submitted and then reviewed by one editor, but they are not deleted right away if found unsuitable—authors may improve their writeup and re-submit. There was a proposal to conduct to conduct a large scale WP:ACTRIAL, whereby all newly registered users [roughly speaking] would have had to go through the AfC process. Anyway, the trial thing seems to have floundered when the WMF chose not to go ahead with it, and this seems to have generated a large amount of ill will, but the AfC process itself is alive an well, although it operates on much smaller scale compared to the "normal" article creation process.

It would be quite interesting to see some sort of A/B testing of these. I did post my (obviously anecdotal) impressions of the two on the mediawiki page. You seem qualified to do a scientific study on this... ASCIIn2Bme (talk) 22:48, 30 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

The interface pages at Special:PrefixIndex/MediaWiki:Customusertemplate-ACP

edit

You created a number of interface messages starting with MediaWiki:Customusertemplate-ACP, which seem to be part of some new user training project. I'm interested in what they're used for: are they still part of some process that's in use at the moment, and if so, where can I find it? I've noticed that many of them are not being kept up to date (there are numerous redlinks, and most articles that you list as suggestions to fix have now been fixed), and feel that they should probably be either maintained or deleted. Do you have opinions on what should be done with the pages? --ais523 01:48, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

The answer can be found here and in the history of my user page here. I don't have any good opinions on what should be done, since I've been out of the loop on the developments, but I know there are some efforts to improve the account creation process. Perhaps ask the WMF?//Hannibal (talk) 11:09, 5 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
