Administrators' newsletter – August 2022

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2022).

  Administrator changes

  Valereee
  Anthony Appleyard (deceased) • CapitalistroadsterSamsara

  Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC has been closed with consensus to add javascript that will show edit notices for editors editing via a mobile device. This only works for users using a mobile browser, so iOS app editors will still not be able to see edit notices.
  • An RfC has been closed with the consensus that train stations are not inherently notable.

  Technical news

  • The Wikimania 2022 Hackathon will take place virtually from 11 August to 14 August.
  • Administrators will now see links on user pages for "Change block" and "Unblock user" instead of just "Block user" if the user is already blocked. (T308570)

  Arbitration

  • The arbitration case request Geschichte has been automatically closed after a 3 month suspension of the case.

  Miscellaneous

  • You can vote for candidates in the 2022 Board of Trustees elections from 16 August to 30 August. Two community elected seats are up for election.
  • Wikimania 2022 is taking place virtually from 11 August to 14 August. The schedule for wikimania is listed here. There are also a number of in-person events associated with Wikimania around the world.
  • Tech tip: When revision-deleting on desktop, hold ⇧ Shift between clicking two checkboxes to select every box in that range.

Wrong speedy deletion

Hi. You deleted the article Prêmio LeBlanc based in “copyright infringement” criteria, but I explained in the discussion page that wasn’t right. Actually, the software which checks copyright infringement only found 1(one)% of similarity, so of course it wasn’t a copyright infringement. Also, this article was a translation from the Portuguese Wikipedia, so I believe it couldn’t be a speedy deletion. Thanks. Lucio Luiz (talk) 23:32, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

It was a copyright violation of the source added that was also done on ptwiki. PRAXIDICAE🌈 23:33, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
It wasn’t. I wrote with care. The only similarities were the name of the award and the name of the sponsors. I write in Wikipedia for more than 20 years, I would not make a copyright infringement. Lucio Luiz (talk) 23:37, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
No, it was an outright copy of the source linked. PRAXIDICAE🌈 23:40, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
How it can be a copy of I wrote this article in 2020 ([2]) and they created this page last month? Lucio Luiz (talk) 23:47, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
Praxidicae is unfortunately correct here, it was a word-for-word copy of the Google Translate result of the source she has linked above. stwalkerster (talk) 23:47, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
So they used the text from Wikipedia, as I showed above the text was written in 2020 and they launched this website last month Lucio Luiz (talk) 23:48, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
there were 4 other sources that predate the article as well. PRAXIDICAE🌈 23:53, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
Which sources? All the sources in the article have different texts. Lucio Luiz (talk) 23:56, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Raising Mamay

Could you please revert the edit of User:Kutingko[6]? The show has already ended last month. And the user reverted it to his/her edit, to add a google/facebook link. It is a completely unconstructive edit and made the article outdated. I also have suspicion that User:Kutingko and User:Raisingmamaygma are the same person and they have been persistent adding the same external links in the same article, for months.TheHotwiki (talk) 15:56, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

I figured I'd be asked this! 😀
I'm not going to become an active participant in the back-and-forth that's been going on in that article. The way forward would be to discuss the changes on the talk page and make an edit request when you have consensus. stwalkerster (talk) 16:02, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
The thing is though the two editors I mentioned are unresponsive in their talk pages. Basically their only contribution in that article was to add the same google/fb links in the article. Now that article is outdated once again.TheHotwiki (talk) 16:09, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Yup, that's kind of the point of the protection - to force everyone to the article talk page to discuss it and come to a consensus, so we avoid the constant reverting that's happening at the moment. stwalkerster (talk) 16:11, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
