Question

Hey there :-) Hope you had a great new years. I nominated Dreaming of You (album) at the GOCE page and it was copy-edited by User:Chaosdruid back in August 2011. I then asked User:Baffle gab1978 to c/e the article back in November 2011. I then submitted it to GAN and the reviewer wants to fail the article because of the prose. He's willing to give it a second chance if someone can c/e the article. So I was wondering if you can be so kind enough to c/e the article while I'll worry about the sourcing? Hi, Jona. I wish I could, but I really can't. I took a request like this once before, and others followed, and I came to realise it wouldn't be fair if I take some and not others. So now I only take requests from the requests page. I think Legolas is right, and the article still needs a fairly heavy copy edit. You already have three requests on the requests page, but Amor Prohibido (album) is getting near the top and may be done fairly soon. Your best bet is to wait until one of yours is done and then add a new request. You can mention that the article has had two GOCE edits but still had problems at GAN because of prose, and you can emphasise that it needs an experienced copy editor. Sorry I can't be more help. Advice

For the subspecies sub-section of the giraffe article, should I change the wording from "less than/fewer than [population]" to "around or close to"? I think the "less than" wording works for the subspecies have have population numbering in the hundreds but wording like "less than 40,000 remain" sounds weird. The source gives a < sign after every population number but I would assume that the actual populations would have to be within the ballpark. LittleJerry (talk) 19:47, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

That's a tricky one. I vaguely remember a comment in the last FAC review about it. The "less/fewer" wording slightly implies a worry that the population is falling below survival threshold, doesn't it? So I agree: good for the hundreds, strange for the tens of thousands. But I think you have to stick with the sources and avoid saying anything stronger than what they say. So, let me see if I understand. On 3 January you request Baffle gab to c/e the article. On 7 January he agrees and starts work. And on 8 January, when he has barely begun, you both add the request on the GOCE page and directly request me to do this. How do you expect Baffle gab to feel about that? How do you expect me to feel about being asked to stand over a colleague like that? I've already made clear many times that I don't accept copy edit requests here. Copy edit requests made here

In the light of recent and not-so-recent events, I want to make the following clear: Except in the case described below (item 3), I will not do copy edits requested on my talk page, but only those requested on the GOCE requests pages. If any editor has been directly requested (i.e. on their talk page) to copy edit an article, and has done so, then I will not copy edit the same article unless it has been submitted for PR, GAN or FAC and the reviewer has said that it needs a further copy edit. In such a case, the article should be listed on the GOCE Requests page and the circumstances described. I will make no exceptions. If an editor has fulfilled a request made on one of the GOCE Requests pages, I will follow the same policy as above, but may make an exception if the requester is dissatisified with the copy edit and has first gained the copy editor's consent. Grammar/copy edit review

Hi. Want to add some fact to My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic#International broadcast. Can you check for some grammar or something?

Some non-English dubs of the third episode of season one, "The Ticket Master" (and in turn, the opening theme), was bundled as a DVD in some G4 toys released in some region before the official dubs of the full series were premiered in respective region, and is available on some local My Little Pony websites. However, they are generally not related to the official dubs.

Hi. Before I suggest a revision, there's a difficulty with "dubs", which is jargon. Are you referring to straight copies or remixes? Also, there's a problem with "some G4 toys", "some region" and "some ... websites" -- in each case, it would be reasonable to ask which ones. Do you have a citation I can check in? Well, to clarify:

• "Dub" as in this definition (verb, 1), as explained in the Dubbing (filmmaking) article.
• For "some G4 toys", according to (I know, they are not reliable, but...) here, some packages of Playful Ponies bundle a DVD of "The Ticket Master". I don't know if Hasbro does the same thing with other G4 packs and those outside USA. And this fan wiki article says "["The Ticket Master"] appears in a promotional DVD distributed by Hasbro in multiple countries, which comes with a small, fully-molded Twilight Sparkle toy. Consequently, many of the show's language dubs were introduced via The Ticket Master, instead of ["Friendship is Magic" (part 1)]."
• For "some ... websites"... hmm... For example, the MLP website for the French Canadians (separated from European French) and that for Greece (1, 2) have some translated FIM intro and/or the full episode of "The Ticket Master" (GRE), despite FIM hasn't aired in and official translations weren't made for those areas yet. (To avoid confusion, in Canada, the English version is being broadcast on Treehouse TV, and full of the translated first season was broadcast in France.)
• And lastly, about the translations of "The Ticket Master" in bundled DVDs, I found those ripped from the DVD uploaded on YouTube (HUN, RUS P1, RUS P2), which are different from the versions later premiered on TV. (HUN, RUS)

(←) OK, I kinda see :) I'm not quite clear about the relationship between G4 body type, wave 4, and the "generations" mentioned in the first paragraph of the "Origin" section of the article. I'll try something, but you'll probably need to hack it around:

G4 toys were sold together with unofficial foreign-language versions of "The Ticket Master" (episode 3 of season 1) on DVD in country1,^[ref1] country2,^[ref2] and country3,^[ref3] even before the official versions of the full series were premiered in those countries. They are available on some local My Little Pony websites,^{[further refs if any]} but are generally unrelated to the official versions.

You'll need to have explained "G4" first, and you might want to replace "countries" with "regions". Sorry that this is the best I can do at the moment. I'm going on holiday for a week and am quite busy getting ready for that, so I won't have time for much more until I'm back on Sunday 29th. Best if you put whatever you believe best into the article. Spotchecks

At the FAC, SandyGeorgia is expecting source spotchecks for accuracy in representation of sources and close paraphrasing. I really don't know what to do about this. I completely sympathize. I've been moderately active in copyright work in WP for several months now, but only came across Wikipedia:Text Copyright Violations 101 recently, and then only because MRG specifically pointed it out to me. I've been looking at some of the entries in Category:Wikipedia copyright and it is simultaneously encouraging that there are so many resources, and discouraging that, well, that there are so many resources (within a less than ideal organizational structure). I proposed to MRG that we do something about this, but exactly what needs a fair bit of thought. Why did the user suggest GAN? If it's ready for FAC, you could go for FAC. If it isn't, then it still won't be after you get GA, so you're you're going to need further work to get to FAC -- aren't you? -- and then then you're going to need a further copy edit, surely. The article is (when the vote is closed) a A-class, close to FA, and I was planning to nominate it after a copy-edit. Another user has suggested to nom it for GA first for some reason, but it's still a Potential FA. With respect, I think you are confusing the issue. An article can't be trying for all of GA, A-class and FA at the same time. All articles on notable subjects are potential FAs, but that is sophistry.

The user who suggested GA did so because WP:MED apparently doesn't recognise A-class, so that project (specifically) would continue to call it B-class; no other reason. Don't worry about that! But you do really need to decide what you are trying to achieve at the moment, and to focus on that. It is an over-use of WP people resources, and may lead people to trip over one another, to try for GAN and A-class and seek a FAC-level copy edit all at the same time. I won't advise which is the best current step for this article, because I don't know; it's up to you. But I won't close the A-class review -- I'm a GOCE coordinator, not a reviewer. Please decide exactly what you want to achieve as your next stage towards your eventual FAC, and then I'll help you navigate our requests pages so that you don't lose out from this. --Stfg (talk) 11:26, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

I was wondering if you have time to help update the list by removing any inactive editors? What I was thinking is that anyone who has not edited in a year or longer should be removed from the mailing list. So restore the useful information. But don't undo the copy editing, remove the five references that have been added (there were none at all in the version you restored today) and reinsert florid POV language such as I have quoted on the talk page. Praise is not "information". The article actually needs a lot more moderating. Do you realise that language like:

Jaeckle was a liberal Republican who established a tough political machine, ran it with an iron fist, insisted on integrity in party and government affairs, and fostered a progressive agenda.

In his own dealings as party leader, he was attentive to his subordinates and fair but firm.

does Jaeckle no favours at all? All it does is to make the article look like a vanity article.

No probs, the pic was a little surprising - I tried to find another more suitable to "fossil" but as none were to be found, I thought that one seemed the only one appropriate (though it does remind me of the strange fish-men from a Doctor Who episode, The Sea Devils)

I am ok, thanks for asking. Things have returned to a little more normality for now after not losing my flat, though I have less time available for editing this year and probably won't be back to more normal levels until May or June. I am missing GOCE, though I will try and help where and when I can. The main issue has been time, which I have been devoting to the Robotics project for the past few months (as I left it on the back burner during my time as coordinator). Hopefully I can get it back on track - there are around 1500 or so articles that need reassessing for a start, and the pressing need for other editors to get involved with tasks other than just their particular little niches of interest, I am sure it will all come together this year :¬)

Charles Dickens' article.

Hi Sftg. You participate in copy editing, and i'm contacting you as the Charles Dickens article has been of a low standard for a long period and edits unvetted. The one issue that needs to be dealt with above all in Talk:Charles_Dickens was one editors sweeping allegations. This subject in particular, has been in dire need of a collaboration and discussion among editors, and not one editors POV, so that consensus on the material is reached on talkpage, and crucially that the addition and wording scholarly. Hello Harrison 1979. You are making several mistakes and are at risk of getting yourself into trouble. Please note the following:

• It's not a good idea to remove large tracts of text from articles when they have good secondary sources. If you feel that the article or section is unbalanced, raise this on the talk page.
• Don't do it in a heated way. Those double question marks on the talk page, and accusing an editor of "malicious misrepresentation of someone", are not conducive to collaborative discussion. It's urgent for you to read the Wikipedia policies Wikipedia:No personal attacks and Wikipedia:Civility, and the behavioural guideline Wikipedia:Assume good faith.
• If you're reverted, don't start edit warring; discuss the issue on the talk page. The page Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle isn't a policy or guideline, but it's good advice.
• Don't canvass. I suggest reading Wikipedia:Canvassing. This message that you've sent to me and the similar ones you've sent to several other editors is inappropriate because we are not involved editors and your message is not neutral.
