Speedy deletion nomination of File:Governor Elect Susana Martinez.jpg edit

A tag has been placed on File:Governor Elect Susana Martinez.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free file with a clearly invalid licensing tag; or it otherwise fails some part of the non-free content criteria. If you can find a valid tag that expresses why the file can be used under the fair use guidelines, please replace the current tag with that tag. If no such tag exists, please add the {{non-free fair use in|article name that the file is used in}} tag, along with a brief explanation of why this constitutes fair use of the file. If the file has been deleted, you can re-upload it, but please ensure you place the correct tag on it.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. 75.211.123.117 (talk) 14:22, 10 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

November 2010 edit

Please do not remove speedy deletion notices from pages you have created yourself, or files you have uploaded yourself, as you did with File:Governor Elect Susana Martinez.jpg. Please use the {{hangon}} template on the page instead if you disagree with the deletion, and make your case on the page's talk page. Thank you. JamesBWatson (talk) 15:59, 10 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please stop. Continuing to remove file deletion tags from file description pages on Wikipedia, as you did to File:Governor Elect Susana Martinez.jpg, without resolving the problem that the template refers to may be considered vandalism. Further edits of this type may result in your being blocked from editing Wikipedia. In addition, the copyright information you gave does not appear to be accurate. You stated that the image was released under the GNU Free Documentation License and the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, despite the fact that the image is commercially sold by the Associated Press (see here), and their license terms are by no stretch of the imagination consistent with either the GNU Free Documentation License or the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license. You also stated that it was a low resolution image, which does not appear to be the case. Please be careful over copyright attributions. Finally, I will remind you once again not to remove speedy deletion tags from files you have uploaded yourself. JamesBWatson (talk) 16:14, 10 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

After writing the above I have discovered that you had already uploaded the same image under the title File:Governor-Elect of NM, Susana Martinez.jpg, and it had been deleted for copyright reasons. Please do not continue to upload images or other material in violation of copyright. JamesBWatson (talk) 16:19, 10 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but you removed a speedy deletion tag from File:Governor Susana Martinez.jpg, a page you have created yourself. If you do not believe the page should be deleted, you can place a {{hangon}} tag on the page, under the existing speedy deletion tag (please do not remove the speedy deletion tag), and make your case on the page's talk page. Administrators will look at your reasoning before deciding what to do with the page. Thank you.

I removed this citation because the article cited to is a copy of a Wikipedia page and so it's not a reliable source. (In fact, the Wikipedia page it was copied from was eventually deleted.) Replaceable fair use File:S Martinez.png edit

Thanks for uploading File:S Martinez.png. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 06:20, 7 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi, StevoJ. I think you are missing one of the fundamental five pillars of Wikipedia—Wikipedia is free content. We take copyright seriously; we are building an encyclopedia that is freely licensed, and in order to do that we must respect the copyrights of others. You cannot just take images you found on the Internet and upload them here. That's a copyright violation. There are some special cases in which non-free images can be used here (see Wikipedia:Non-free content), but non-free photographs of living people are definitely not allowed. See the first non-free content criterion, which states, "Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose." A photograph of a living person is almost always potentially replaceable by a freely licensed photograph. That is the primary reason we cannot allow File:S Martinez.png here. If you have questions, please let me know or ask them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. —Bkell (talk) 06:38, 7 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
