Directors templates edit

Hello. Would you like to take a look at my reply at User_talk:Commander_Keane#Director_templates about this subject? The JPS 15:53, 5 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Agree 100% on director template, but do not agree on you comment on shark template, sure IF we ever get over 100 shark articles then we can start to change, but as it is now, this template makes it much easier for non wikipeda experts to find other shark articles. Think we should have a general discussion about nav templates, but do not know where to do it and do nto have enough time to follow up. Stefan 01:44, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, some tools (such as categories) are only easy to use if you know that they are there, and we must remember that we are collaborating to create material for a wider readership than those of us who know the intricies of wikipedia. I'm not bothered about the Shark template, but the vote doesn't appear close enough that wihdrawing mine would make much difference. My main reasoning is that directors templates provide the essential chronological order, which categories cannot achieve. The shark template lists them in alphabetical order, which is achievable by categorisation... The JPS 01:53, 10 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
Agree, categories have many very nice features, but for navigational purposes they suck! For occasional wiki users, you need a one click link, not multiple links. I know the shark template is lost, I can not understand, true there are 350+ sharks, but there is hardly enough know about 40 of them to write more than stubs, the argument that there will be 350 of them is not a good one, how many sharks can you name that is not in the box? it took almost one year to increase the number of sharks in that box by 16, wonder how many new articles that is not stubs we can make in the next year, I would doubt that we can make 10 more, better to fix the once we have with more meat. Nevermind, I guess my next task in wikiland is to make a nice list :-) Stefan 02:41, August 10, 2005 (UTC)

Link spam edit

I've seen that you deleted some link spam from shark articles. I seem that the same user has addes the same links to most, if not ALL, shark articles. I've deleted some, too. I advice you too check as more as shark articles to remove it. Ciao!! Attilios

Invitation to help me improve Tiger shark and Bull shark edit

I've noticed your outstanding work on some species of sharks. I don't know whether you have noticed the tremendous disparity in quality in respect to articles on individual shark species. Some articles like Oceanic Whitetip Shark (which both of us have worked on) and Great White Shark are top-drawer - examples of first-class effort by the Wikicommunity.

The two above-referenced articles are in great need of improvement. Bull shark, in particular, is pathetic. --Hokeman 18:12, 24 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

    • Thanks for your reply on my user page, and your willingness to help. Like you, I was pre-occupied with another Wiki-project;however, now I intend to turn my full attention to sharks. My pet project is going to be to compile a list detailing the people who died in unprovoked shark attacks in the United States and the circumstances of their deaths. There really is nothing comprehensive on the web in this regard - only piecemeal stuff. Burgess at Florida could do it, but he's so secretive and canny. I intend to add content to Bull shark, Tiger shark, and possibly Great White Shark as I progress--Hokeman 19:46, 25 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bronze Whaler edit

I have read that a few people have been killed by Bronze Whalers in Victoria(Australia), but your link seems to refute that, so I may have been wrong. (Khanada 02:56, 28 March 2006 (UTC))Reply

Yes, that is a good point about knowing which species was involved in a fatal attack, but you are correct about not adding it on wikipedia in asmuch as it is an encyclopedia & only information that is confirmed should be entered. (Khanada 05:21, 28 March 2006 (UTC))Reply

Help me! edit

Hello! I'm a Persian Wikipedian and I wanna build a robot, but I like to build a one in English Wikipedia. So Can you help to make a bot step by step??? Thanks a lot! --MehranVB 17:07, 12 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't understand exactly that what I do now! Can you tell me what I do step by step? Now, I downloaded the Python language (Because of here), but I don't know what I do now! I will happy if you help me. Thanks a lot again! --MehranVB 16:35, 15 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
No, I didn't get Pywikipedia framework and I don't know how I can download it!--MehranVB 05:56, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Excuse me for asking this stupid question! I can't download the files from sourceforge and I don't know how I can do it! When I click on Download button a page showing some buttons and I must choose one of them (They are names of the states), I choose one of them but next page is the same page! Please help me and tell me what I do?! Thanks! --MehranVB 13:27, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
I downloaded the package with no problem (of course with your help). As I told you, I want to use my robot in Persian Wikipedia but before it I want to have an English one to understand how it works. Tasks that I want to my robot do them are: Make Category, Raplace a letter with another, Make redirect, Interwiki (Especially Farsi language), Disambiguation pages, etc. So What's the next step? In here, I met the word "CVS". What's this? Is it neccesory for me? What should I do now?--MehranVB 16:27, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:WikiProject Sharks edit

You wanna take a week between the two of us to whip this project idea into shape and then present it to the community? Lemme know. Cheers, Tomertalk 04:53, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Stefan, Count me in. I have been working on golfers lately, but will be ready to start working on sharks again after I return from vacation on July 5.--Hokeman 18:53, 26 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Unblock 202.156.6.54 edit

{{unblock}}

User:202.156.6.54 is a shared IP of Singapores largest ISP (it blocks me even though I am logged in), it should only be blocked with care. It is now blocked "17:34, May 30, 2006 Mel Etitis blocked "202.156.6.54 (contribs)" with an expiry time of 24 hours (persistent vandalism after long string of warnings and earlier blocks) "

I can not find the vandalism! I can not find ANY page in the user log that is reverted for the last 2-3 hours before the block! Can some nice admin look into it and unblock the IP? Stefan 11:37, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Further study I think indicates that the IP did 2 cases of vandalism at 00:44, 30 May and 16:37, 29 May 2006 and was blocked at 09:35, 30 May with many many good edits in between. (only checked talk page, so there might have been more that I can not find). Stefan 11:59, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Done, you're the third guy I've come across today who was using that IP. --Sam Blanning(talk) 14:13, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Boot flag? edit

Hi! How did you get your bot flag [1] I checked Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approvals and Wikipedia:Bots/Approval_log no update there, is there another place to ask? Still no update on my request..... Stefan 01:11, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

It was approved by robchurch [2], and bot flag was given by Linuxbeak [3]. Seems no one's added it to the approval log. Good luck with yours :) —Pengo 01:56, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sawfish, not sawshark edit

Thanks for letting me know about this image. I don't recall exactly what made me think it was definitely a sawshark but I've looked at some photos of a sawshark elsewhere on the internet and I think the person that left a note on the talk page of the article is right - it is a sawfish after all. I'll make the change to the caption as well as move it to the correct article. Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 08:17, 25 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Shark project - user:HappyVR edit

Got your message, yes I am interested in sharks though my edits to the shark pages were to do with a bit of a work I was doing on category:live-bearing fish. I busy at the moment adding genera to the underpopulated catfish order (siluriformes), and I looks like that may continue for a long time. However if I ever finish there I would definately come and see if there is anything I can do for the sharks (and skates and rays as well which I like). I've marked your project page to watch so you never know - I might help occasionally.

I assume you know about Wikipedia:WikiProject Fishes which is probably doing the same for all fish as you are doing for sharks. I'll be reading shark articles as and when I get time - what I've seen suggests the project is going pretty well. Keep up the good work. I'll let you know if I start doing any major work on sharks etc.

I'll be adding to the live-bearing fish/viviparous/ovoviviparous category systematically as I have time. What would be really useful is if there was a log of pages added - I'm going to ask about this on the fishproject talk page.HappyVR 19:05, 26 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Shark project edit

Thanks for invitation Stefan. I will do whatever I can on shark subjects but my time too is limited. I will probably occasionally drop in and try to improve stuff. Janderk 16:46, 27 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Shark project case edit

I saw you changed my changes on the oceanic whitetip page: according to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Fishes project the names should be rendered in sentence case which would mean that the first word would be initially uppercased only if it was the first word in the sentence or phrase. Or did I miss something there? Yomangani 16:09, 28 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorry but this is my first ever vandalism varning i wikipedia and I must object a bit for getting it, since I put a speedy delete on the articles myself before you varned me, so no point in warning me really, not sure why you did it. Stefan 08:00, 29 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

It isn't a warning, it is a standard message to let you know that your requests have been actioned. No warning was issued in your edit history either. You have not been marked as a vandal by me or any other editor, so far as I know.  (aeropagitica)  (talk)  09:04, 29 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Peer review edit

I made a small mistake in the instructions; instead of adding {{subst:js|User:AndyZ/peerreviewer.js}}, just add {{subst:js|User:AndyZ/peerreviewer.js}} (without the nowiki tags) to your monobook. I placed an updated peer review on the peer review page. Cheers, AZ t 14:24, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Oceanic whitetip edit

I've filled it out with some references and rearranged it a bit. I think with the peer review comments and the fac rules we are just about there. I'll put it up for FAC on Monday unless you see anything obviously wrong/bad. I fancy doing the basking shark next, what about you? Yomangani 13:23, 28 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Quite agree on getting this one up first. BTW, started up Portal:Sharks yesterday - may as well get as much exposure as possible. Yomangani 10:47, 29 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've put it up as a FAC. Gulp. Yomangani 11:22, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I spent about an hour going through Oceanic Whitetip again. I was very impressed with the "clean-up" that you and Yomangani have done in the last few days. I didn't find any flaws or any weaknesses (and therefore made no edits). It compares structurally very favorably with some of the other scientific and technical featured articles. The photographs are very pleasing to the eye, albeit the committee might come back and say that they are both the same (single Oceanic whitetip with a small school of pilotfish).--Hokeman 03:16, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
It's all gone quiet - hopefully that means those who objected are re-reading it. Yomangani 15:33, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Do you, by any chance, have any references for this statement "Until the 16th century, sharks were known to mariners as 'sea dogs'"? Sandy has requested a citation for it and I can't find one anywhere. I can find a citation for shark being used after the 16th century, but not for sea dog being used before (although there a lot of uses of it). We are almost there... Yomangani 16:21, 8 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Found one, but if you have a better one it won't hurt. Yomangani 16:40, 8 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
    • Cogratulations to you and Yomangani on FA status for this article. You guys did a magnificent job putting on the finishing touches. (I was away for 12 days starting on 21 Aug. - that is the reason this congratulatory note is somewhat belated.)--Hokeman 19:39, 2 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Shark Portal edit

Good idea, i had thought that would be a good portal a while ago but never got round to doing anything about it. I will be interested in helping out and am currently working on the cetaceans portal. There really seems to be a lot missing on sharks on wikipedia so i think we need to fix this. --chris_huh 18:18, 29 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Shark project edit

Stefan, I have been trying to send you a response for days and days; however, the AOL IP's that I have been on have been steadily blocked. I am ready to jump into the shark project, and have started doing some research for a page on the Galapagos shark. I will also review Oceanic whitetip shark as you asked. I wholeheartedly agree that we shark editors should try to get at least one of our articles featured (and I wholeheartedly agree that Oceanic whitetip is the right one) - so it will serve as a "model of excellence" for other shark pages.--Hokeman 15:35, 30 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Project edit

I've tried to suggest to Lenny that merging the two projects would be a good idea, but he refuses to discuss it with me as I am a mere "member" of the project. He may accept suggestions from you, but I doubt it as he seems to believe he owns the project and by extension every shark article. Have a go anyway - there are few enough editors working on the project (although GrahamBould has been tearing through a few recently). If he won't discuss it we can suggest finding a neutral 3rd party to mediate. I was going to edit the WikiProject Shark page, but I think he would take that as an act of aggression. Good luck on the house move btw. Cheers, Yomangani 12:09, 10 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Doesn't do any harm to have it on my page too, no worries. Yomanganitalk 17:09, 10 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
if you want to run a project on your own then keep your project - case CLOSED. Lenny 18:13, 10 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I dont know where this problem will come to but in the mean time BOTH projects will stay running and BOTH templates will be on articles if needed. Lenny 07:49, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I am using userboxes to encourage people to join, if you remove them that will NEVER happen (so thats your plan). Thus merging might happen in the (very) distant future. Lenny 08:12, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
MY project dicourages bad articles and any article that features things that are bad to sharks like Shark fin soup and Shark net. So my project wants to rewrite these to make it what it is - a bad thing and not encouraging chinese fin soup. How would the feal if we in the uk made chinese scalp soup? In addition to this we also do what you do edit good to sharks articles to make them the best they can be. Lenny 08:26, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I might discuss merge. Lenny 08:58, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Must - At least some of my work must be included in 'the great merge of the level'. Otherwise it wouldn't be a merge but a deletion. I'll redo the logo to say sharks. OK? Lenny 09:35, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I am afraid it is hand made, it took hours to write all of it, then add syntax codes to it. I have redone the logo and you can see it at [:image:WikiProject Sharks by Lenny.PNG]. We got there eventually.
I placed it under logo licence, I guess I should move it to GFDL. Lenny 10:24, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
So what do we do now? Lenny 11:01, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
