Thanks for changing all those tables over, it's a big help :-) T.PK 05:08, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

What's with the new facility station tables? TPK came up with that idea a while ago, but I objected then - and still do now - because it's just not very encyclopedic information. Most of the good articles we already have either don't mention this stuff at all, or very briefly in passing. Ambi 02:46, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

From your recent edit: "It is also one of the few suburban stations to have Metcard barrier gates installed." - Erm, huh?! Every single metro premium station I've ever seen has Metcard barrier gates these days, and most regular stations too. Unless Frankston has recently installed some new type of barrier gate which this statement is meant to emphasise, then it's not correct. If that is the case, could you please reword it to reflect how Frankston's gates are different to the Metcard gates at every other station? Thanks. - Vaelor 23:00, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)

From the page at [1] that you directed me to:- "Page last modified/checked: Monday, 7 October 2002". I have no proof to the contrary, and nor am I an avid public transport enthusiast, but I just have a strong hunch that since that article was written, several if not many more stations have been equipped with barriers, particularly since Connex's partial takeover. If there's no more recent evidence than that, I'm going to add the date to the statement. - Vaelor 23:15, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Well, as I mentioned above, I'm not any kind of public transport enthusiast, in fact this really does come under the category of things I couldn't likely care less about. I just like to keep Wikipedia accurate, or at the very least factual, so in absence of any more recent corroborating evidence as to the number of stations that have Metcard barriers, I felt it was important to make note of the date of information on the article. I still personally suspect that there are surely more than 13 train stations in Melbourne with Metcard barriers today, but you're obviously a much more dedicated train lover than I am, so I won't sit here arguing the fact in the absence of proof. Heck, I don't even like public transport! =) - Vaelor 13:39, 18 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Moving categories

edit

Hello! You requested a move for Category:Victorian regional railway stations, and that request was moved to Wikipedia:Categories for deletion because that's where we handle category moves. I went ahead and added a {{cfd}} tag also.

There is currently no easy way to move categories. What we do is manually move the individual articles to the new category and then delete the old one. I just wanted you to know why I tagged your category for deletion. :) -[[User:Aranel|Aranel ("Sarah")]] 19:41, 22 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hey there. Thanks for uploading Image:Aircraft-metfink.jpg to Wikipedia. Unfortunately, the license terms (no third-party use) make the image nonfree and incompatible with Wikipedia's license. Can you obtain terms compatible with our license from the copyright holder? —Tkinias 01:38, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Greetings again. Image:72ReliantSuperRobin.jpg also has license problems; the restriction on modifying the image and the prohibition of third-party use both make the image nonfree. Can you obtain GFDL-compatible terms on this image from the copyright holder? —Tkinias 01:47, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

User:TPK afaik got permission to use images from [2] on Wikipedia earlier this month. See Talk:List of closed Melbourne railway stations. With Image:72ReliantSuperRobin.jpg, I got permission to use it (but not modify it) on Wikipedia. Has there been some change in policy or something? Somebody in the WWW 01:49, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)
No, policy hasn't exactly changed, but as User:Ambi says on Talk:List of closed Melbourne railway stations "the days of non-free images here are probably numbered"; saying "probably" is really just cushioning it, as it is only a matter of time. We aren't supposed to be uploading any more nonfree images; the nonfree tags (e.g. {{permission}}) are only there so that nonfree images already uploaded can be tracked and dealt with. "No third-party use" and "no modification" are both terms that are incompatible with GFDL and make an image nonfree. What we need is GFDL, a compatible Creative Commons license, or "any use" with no strings attached. —Tkinias 02:00, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hi there: last time I looked, CopyrightFreeUse was the appropriate tag: it's a PR image for press usage and would definitely qualify (according to an attorney at work) as fair use for Wikipedia. Please let me know if there's a better tag and I'll be happy to oblige. Stombs 06:27, Jan 5, 2005 (UTC)

Funny, I definitely saw CopyrightFreeUse at the time—otherwise I wouldn't have entered it. It must have changed. It did exist (see the talk page to Ed g2s); and it was on a page of copyright tags here at Wikipedia last month. Stombs 06:37, Jan 5, 2005 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of images

edit

I see you marked Image:Tea.jpg for speedy deletion, but you didn't say why. You also marked it as {{unverified}}, but that isn't a criteria for speedy deletion. Could you please include a reason in your edit summary, and mark images as {{ifd}} if they don't meet speedy criteria. Thanks.-gadfium 05:35, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I've put it up for ifd.-gadfium 06:10, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm back (albeit trying not to be as active). Ambi 01:22, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Sure - although I'm moving to Canberra in five weeks, which will limit the photography and stuff that I'll be able to do. I've been planning to do at least one more line before I leave, in the same way that I did Alamein (catch the train to a station, take photos, catch train to next station, etc.) Any suggestions as to a good line to do? Ford Territory image

edit

The Ford Territory image (Image:0817tmp3.jpg) you enquired about has exactly the source I said: Ford New Zealand publicity photograph. You are allowed to have foreign plates on cars in New Zealand for six months. This vehicle was, according to Ford, used for press demonstrations in New Zealand, and the scenery is New Zealand, too. Two of my colleagues drove SSP 229, with Victoria plates, around New Zealand in August. Stombs 08:42, Jan 11, 2005 (UTC)

Removal of Upfield Bike Path Image

edit

Hi, Can you explain the reason you removed Image:Upfield_bike_path_melbourne.jpg from the Upfield_bike_path page?--Takver 06:48, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I saw your explanation on Tirin's talk page, and that's fair enough, but I'm re-adding it until that picture is actually taken - as the existing picture is better than nothing. It would've been nice if you had a) not marked it as a minor edit, and b) explained why in the edit summary, rather than just removing it without explanation.

Secondly, why did you remove the image from the Coldstream page? Ambi 23:54, 26 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Blackburn railway station

edit

I reverted the edit because, while it added a couple of things, it removed considerably more information, including references, historical details, and location details that were markedly more notable than the number of bike lockers. Ambi 07:10, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

It was hardly irrelevant material. I re-added the factoid, though - I'd missed that amidst all the other deletions. Ambi 07:48, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Melbourne railway stations

edit

I think that Essendon railway station, Melbourne has now surpassed Ashburton railway station, Melbourne in article quality, and I'm thinking I like the layout too. I'd like to start flushing the format throughout the network. What's your opinion? Josh Parris 07:50, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Good to see you back and active. Josh Parris 7 July 2005 11:42 (UTC)

Nice to see you editing again - any chance we'll see it a bit more frequently? With you gone, a lot of the work on rail articles has slowed to a trickle. :( Ambi 05:12, 25 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

MVMs

edit

May I ask what the point is of adding MVM numbers to the adjacent station tables? It seems like a completely random piece of information to include in a completely random location, not to mention that it looks like gibberish to anyone that doesn't know what an MVM does. TPK 06:55, 30 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

It's out of the way but frankly, just because some articles had MVM information doesn't mean it needs to be there. IMHO, it does not. TPK 07:29, 30 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
FTR, I also agree with TPK. Ambi 07:19, 3 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Changes to the Somerton Line

edit

Dear Somebody in the WWW

You wrote that I altered your entry in Closed Melbourne Lines, to wit the Somerton Line.

I did no such thing intentionally. I added information regarding the closed St Kilda-Windsor loop line. I know nothing about the Somerton Line, and would not enter in anything about which I have little or no knowledge.

If my actions somehow erased your entry then I have no idea how this happened, but please accept my apologies. Nevertheless I suggest that a polite enquiry might be more appropriate rather than accusing someone of vandalism. I respectfully draw your attention to Please do not bite the newcomers, and dispute resolution.

On the other hand, I am keen to know more about closed railway lines, and will look for your entries on the subject. As it is a subject we are both interested in it would be a pity to be engaged in pointless squabbles.

Image Tagging Image:Tangarapic.jpg

edit

This image may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Tangarapic.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --OrphanBot 12:33, 27 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:WikiProject Cat breeds

edit

I noted that you are one of the listed members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Cat breeds. That project has seemed to go dormant lately, although my recent joining has reactivated it. I was wondering if you would think it might be a good idea to merge the two projects together. I acknowledge that the scope of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Cats is a lot broader than that of the cat breeds project, but it does at least seem to have gotten a fair amount of new members lately. Also, given its breadth, it could easily take on the duties of the Cat breeds project now that it has become dormant. I would be very interested in hearing from you on either project page whether you think the two projects should merge or not. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 19:17, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Here is a copy of the first newsletter of the Cats WikiProject, mentioning the proposed merger. I'm sending it out to all of the members of the Cat Breeds Project so that they can know a little about the group with which there is an existing merger proposal. We would welcome any and all comments about the project, and the newsletter, from members of both groups. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 16:29, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:VBcan.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Orphaned fair use image (Image:Cityraillogo.gif)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Cityraillogo.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Fifth Melbourne meetup

edit

The fifth meetup of Melbourne Wikipedians is being planned as a breakfast meeting in the city with Jimbo Wales (at a venue to be arranged) on Friday, 27 April 2007.

Jimbo has proposed breakfast as the one real window of opportunity during his tightly scheduled stay in Melbourne. Tbe precise time has to be sorted out with Jimbo, but the arrangements for the equivalent Adelaide meetup a few days before may give a good idea.

Feel free to edit the relevant page in any way that might be helpful. I feel like a bit of an interloper, not having attended previous meetups. If there's anything you can do to help, I'll be grateful. Please think about whether you'll be able to make it, assuming the arrangements are similar to those Adelaide is adopting (i.e. a block of time with people being fairly free to arrive when it suits them). Some indication on the page of your possible participation would be really helpful. Metamagician3000 06:28, 29 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please stop adding a speedy-delete tag to this article; it is so clearly not "patent nonsense" that I don't understand what you think you're doing. --Mel Etitis (Talk) 11:56, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

You need to read the criteria for speedy deletion:
"Patent nonsense and gibberish, an unsalvageably incoherent page with no meaningful content. This does not include: poor writing, partisan screeds, obscene remarks, vandalism, fictional material, material not in English, badly translated material, implausible theories, or hoaxes."
This article makes perfect sense — as you point out, it's imperfect, and merits "cleanup" and other templates, but it's simply not a candidate for speedy deletion. --Mel Etitis (Talk) 12:09, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Unspecified source for Image:Apache_HTTPd_logo.png

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Apache_HTTPd_logo.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 19:54, 18 May 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — pd_THOR | =/\= | 19:54, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image (Image:LFS logo.png)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:LFS logo.png. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 07:21, 21 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Mtdandybus.gif

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Mtdandybus.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. After Midnight 0001 04:49, 30 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use Image:EssendonAirport.jpg

edit

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:EssendonAirport.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Quadell (talk) (random) 13:11, 21 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
