Ananda Maitreya Central College (බලන්ගොඩ ආනන්ද මෛත්‍රෙය ජාතික පාසල) is a Buddhist school for Sri Lankan boys and girls, with classes in secondary, on a land adjacent to Ananda Maitreya Thero's pirivena[2] in Miriswattha, Balangoda[3].

Early history

On July o5th of 1943 this school was started based on Balangoda Miriswatta Sri Dhammananda Monastery with the courage and will of above mentioned Monks and after that it has been feeding education for thousands of innocent students of Balangoda area for 60 years of time. Find until the school was inherited by the Sri Lankan Government all the needs such as financial aids, buildings, infrastructures, requirements and maintainance were fulfilled with the generous hand of the Donators of Balangoda Area.

The Motto of the school is “A man is not a slave of another”. The students of the school do their education in different streams such as Art, Commerce, Mathematics, Biology and Technology and many have succeeded in their education and are serving the mother land as Doctors, Engineers, Administrative officers and so many respectable and they have become the honor and the light of the R/ Balangoda Ananda Maithreya Central College.

This school which was started in order to give the light of education to the lives of Balangoda rural children became world famous as a secondary education institute and, it was renamed as R/ Balangoda Ananda Maithreya Central College in order to respect the founder Balangoda Ananda Maithreya Sangaraja Thero and it was announced in front of the Maha Nayake thero by the Ex Minister of Education honorable V. J. M. Lokubandara in 1991. On 23rd December 1993 the school was named as a National School of Sri Lanka.

The school which was started with only 128 students and a small shelter now has become a major college in Sabaragamuwa province with more than 2500 students and well facilitated buildings and other infrastructures.

Founders of the School

When Sri Lanka started so many Buddhist Schools to give education to the children in the country the Balangoda area also worried about education of the rural children. To achieve this objective there were many respectable, honorable theroes who took the initiative actions. Some of the monasteries which were started with the help of those theroes are mentioned as follows.

The forefathers of the R/ Balangoda Ananda Maithreya Central College, which was well known as Balangoda Central college all over the country are mentioned with respect as follows.

Aggha maha panditha Maharattaguru, the Ex chancellor of university of Vidyodaya (Currently Sri Jayawardanapura University). The mahanayake thero of Amarapura Siri Saddhammawansha maha nika temple of Rassagala and President thero of Amarapura Maha Sangasabha, honorable Balangoda Ananda Maithreya Sangaraja thero.

Balangoda Sri Sumanajothi Maha Thero resided at Sri Sudarshana Maha Viharaya Thumbagoda and the Major Sanganayake of of Sabaragamuwa province of Amarapura Sri Saddhammawansa Maha nika.

Emanating the fragrance of wisdom and virtues since 5th July 1943, in a salubrious atmosphere there stands proudly R/ Balangoda Ananda Maithreya Central College with the blessings of its founder “The most Venerable Abhidhaja Maharattaguru Agga Mahapanditha Balangoda Ananda Maithreya Mahanayaka Thero”. Although there were only 13 students at the very inception, at present the school community consists of 2700 students, 144 teachers and a non academic staff 21 officials. At present, the school has become one of the leading schools in the island securing its place among the best 50 schools in Sri Lanka based on the G.C.E. O/L results. Furthermore, each year the school paves the way for almost 200 students at the G.C.E A/L Examination to have their higher education at universities. Over and above that R/Balangoda Ananda Maithreya Central College is always on the crest of a wave when it comes to co-curricular and extra–curricular activities performing its best at all levels.

Also known as "Balangoda Ananda Maithreya National School". Both of Girls & Boys are educated in Balangoda Ananda Maithreya Central Collage and there are classes from grade 6 to Grade 13 including Advanced Level with Science, Commerce & Arts. There are some Associations such as Sinhala Literary Association, Buddhist Association, IT club, Sports club, Old Pupil's Association. Mr. Ravindra De Silva is the new principal in A.M.C.C. There are 2200 students more. Ananda Maithriya Central Collage is one of Best school in Balangoda.

Houses

The students are belonged to four houses:

  • Thissa ( තිස්ස) - Colour -   Red
  • Gamunu ( ගැමුණු) - Colour -   Yellow
  • Vijaya ( විජය)- Colour -   Green
  • Gajaba ( ගජබා)- Colour -   Blue

An annual track-and-field tournament among these houses is held at the beginning of the first term.
