Thar she be... edit

They're pretty ruthless about pics (though Clio's page is littered with them big and small) so I thought there might have been a loophole. Still, she's intact so far, so I'll keep her on my talk page. Thanks for getting back to me, salut, Julia Rossi (talk) 04:14, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bordell Makejewka edit

I'm fairly convinced by your analysis and shall work it into our caption as an editor's note. Saves me from having to prowl those websites of NS-memorabilia that tend to make my skin crawl more than the real stuff. (I help document the GFH Archives collection but we decline to post these on our website's online archive lest it become a locus of unsavory homage.) Thanks much! -- Deborahjay (talk) 23:12, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good to hear from you, dear DJ! I don't know a lot about the Reichskommissariat Ukraine and Case Blue, but I understand the Nazis were in Makeyevka by 1942. Maybe these tickets were found on POWs or fallen soldiers in Stalingrad before their bearers could use them in occupied territory. I may be very wrong, but I did do some more searching in German too, and found no second "Makejewka" or anything else pointing to another explanation.
On a completely unrelated note (unrelated, unless you hang out at WP:RD/H it seems :-( ...), I was about to drop a message on your talk page, because I don't wish to enter debates at WT:RD. Here I am, breaking one of our core policies, and yes, I detect a rank odor from under the bridge. In 99% of similarly smelling cases, I completely ignore the bait, and also those who take it. This is what I recommend here too. As difficult as it is, and as upsetting and polemical some of the arguments are, it's just not worth any serious volunteer's bother. Just my opinion, YMMV of course. (And I wouldn't complain if the thread got removed either, I'm just not up for another freedom-of-speech debate). There, that really helped, didn't it :( ---Sluzzelin talk 23:39, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
...actually, after reconsidering, it was wrong to say it's "not worth any serious volunteer's bother". It might well be worth trying to educate here too. It's just very difficult to get it right in debates like this. On rare occasions, someone thoughtful will land a lucky punch, and no one else will post anything after that, but usually the mess just continues, no matter how well you argue. The desks aren't as good as they want to be. ---Sluzzelin talk 23:55, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
....and I'm not as good as I want to be, so I keep trying. :-) You're so kind to advise me, and I do take it to heart, to keep in mind. Hearts and minds is what keeps me on the, what shall we call it, task force? of the Humanities RD, with my belief—hopefully not mistaken—that it's widely read. Think, as I do, about the paradigm of The Four Sons...though that's "family," from which trolls are excluded, being a separate species. Yes, I spend (and waste) precious time, but I'm not alone; I just try to step in with what I have to offer. It's a constant (however intermittent) refining process, but that's life! Bottom line: you're right, and I'll take heed as I keep on keepin' on. I do hope those who read what I wrote on the RD talk will take a more active role (as Eron already did) as I'm not a vigilante, only one determined but overloaded person. OTOH, you can understand from what I've written to you here (and will respond there later), in antagonistic queries about Israel and the Jews that aren't removed for outright trolling, I don't agree with SteveBaker that these should be ignored. Thanks for writing as and what you did, here and in the RD talk; that thread really did upset me. -- yrs. truly, Deborahjay (talk) 08:48, 26 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ah the four sons, thanks for that! It's a great approach, and I shall keep reminding myself that the four sons show their faces in the responses as well :-) I certainly don't think there is anything wrong in setting things straight, and usually find myself agreeing with what you write. I guess I was more concerned about your individual sanity (and mine; empathy is painful) than about the best collective approach (that hardly ever works smoothly anyway). Already, the next chapter is at WT:RD, and I continue to agree with Eron, as do you I presume. ---Sluzzelin talk 18:09, 26 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Mokrous it is! edit

Dear Sluzzelin, whatever would we do without you?! Your suggested spelling yields Google hits that evince a thriving community in our time, and I'm content to go with this. As always, many thanks for sharing your knowledge! In case you're curious, let me explain what I'm up to: a months'-long project of checking and registering "hints" (= #redirect in WP markup) for the Ghetto Fighters' House online archive data base's key words (places, people, organizations, and concepts). Tremendous fun for a pedantic infoholic like yrs. truly; the only real problem is restraining myself from going off on tangents! -- Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 08:29, 26 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

How many pedantic infoholics does it take to change a light bulb? (And how many to write an encyclopedia :-) Thank you for the feedback and link to archives. On this computer it doesn't seem to be working right. I get the GFH header, but the rest is blank. I've browsed through the GFH homepage on other occasions, and found it most interesting. It is satisfying to research questions serving a purpose. ---Sluzzelin talk 17:58, 26 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh! Is your browser Windows IE or other—and if another, which? The GFH website is undergoing evaluation for revision and I'm on the committee that's getting underway in fits and starts. I have a particular and undisguised vested interest as my work in English is a large part of its content, particularly the online archives. We'd been advised in the past that the site is incompatible (or perhaps just flaky) with Firefox, Netscape, and whatever else is becoming a popular alternative to IE (whose Version 7 barely works on our home computers :-/ so I'd like to solicit some testimony for that. -- Deborahjay (talk) 13:21, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
I was using Safari, but there may be some other problem. I'll try it with firefox on the same computer when I get the chance (right now I'm using IE on a different computer, and the archives work fine). ---Sluzzelin talk 01:02, 28 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

RD Regs edit

Good catch, the list is indeed ordered by sig name. -hydnjo (talk) 20:56, 14 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

How do we fit in those who frequently (and radically) change their signature, while keeping their username? Update it ever so often? Stick to the user name and ignore the sigs? Display the entire palette? ---Sluzzelin talk -Disruptive signature change reverted by Hydnjo 19:11, 15 April 2009 (UTC) -Disruptive signature change reverted by Hydnjo -Disruptive signature change reverted by Hydnjo -Disruptive signature change reverted by SigBotReply
Ridicule from hydnjo? That's ridiculous! hydnjo (talk) 18:05, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Wait, are you saying I'm ridiculous? ---Sluzzelin talk 03:31, 10 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
No, of course not - just your edit summary. Furthermore, it is your blatant abuse of WP:EA in this edit summary that will be reported. -hydnjo (talk) 13:25, 10 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the response.

I've narrowed down the query for you at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Humanities#What are the benefits of a tree structure?.

Architecture question edit

I've added more information to the Reference Desk request about the architecture style of that unusual diner, about which you commented. Would you be willing to leave another note? Nyttend (talk) 04:18, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I added what little I found. I probably won't be able to edit for the next couple of days. I'm merely interested in architecture, but by no means an expert. Maybe WP:ARCH can be of assistance regarding the building's appropriate categorization. ---Sluzzelin talk 04:58, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Dexter's Tune edit

Every time I see Awakenings I get affected by that tune, and I always intend to track it down, but never followed it up. So thanks for the link. It cost me $4.95 for 3 pages, but it was worth it. I've now played it 20 times, with nary a tear in sight. One gloomy day, though, when everything's going catastrophically wrong in my life, I'm sure it'll be different. (Universe: That is NOT an invitation, OK.) -- JackofOz (talk) 00:17, 24 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm a bit sad that I helped demystify that tune's emotive power, but I echo your appeal to the Universe :-). ---Sluzzelin talk 05:04, 25 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

ThankSpam edit

My RfA

Thank you for participating in my "RecFA", which passed with a final tally of 153/39/22. There were issues raised regarding my adminship that I intend to cogitate upon, but I am grateful for the very many supportive comments I received and for the efforts of certain editors (Ceoil, Noroton and Lar especially) in responding to some issues. I wish to note how humbled I was when I read Buster7's support comment, although a fair majority gave me great pleasure. I would also note those whose opposes or neutral were based in process concerns and who otherwise commented kindly in regard to my record.
I recognise that the process itself was unusual, and the format was generally considered questionable - and I accept that I was mistaken in my perception of how it would be received - but I am particularly grateful for those whose opposes and neutrals were based in perceptions of how I was not performing to the standards expected of an administrator. As much as the support I received, those comments are hopefully going to allow me to be a better contributor to the project. Thank you. Very much. LessHeard vanU (talk) 16:49, 24 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pola Flotilla edit

I see you’ve dabbbed Pula on a couple of artices I’ve been involved with. Which is fair enough, but “Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore” as an edit history? Curiouser and curiouser!Xyl 54 (talk) 23:40, 27 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Entangled in automatisms, I pasted the Università instead of "Pula". It is perhaps unfortunate that edit summaries cannot be changed once you hit "Save page". ---Sluzzelin talk 07:12, 31 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

... or not, as the case may be. I had started to write something, intending the same general message you have articulated, but found mine full of sneak attacks on belief as a system for understanding. I am one of the anti-religionists and am seldom successful in hiding it. Thank you for your better sense and more elegant wording, including the funny edit summary. I can now cease trying to be polite on a matter where I usually find best amusement in ridicule. That, however, is not appropriate on WP. // BL \\ (talk) 17:04, 23 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, Bielle. My sense is no better, maybe the little self-censor in my head has more power over me ... then again, it is possible I had the Sunny Side lyrics in mind as performed by The Pogues. ---Sluzzelin talk 20:28, 23 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Embarrasing, and very revealing, is the fact that I have never heard of the Pogues. It's an age thing; I'd been married for (counting slowly on her arthritic fingers) 10 years by then and my world view didn't involve much in the way of new bands. // BL \\ (talk) 03:51, 27 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
