Restrictive - me?

Thanks for that. Most of my interventions are intended to be ironic but irony often doesn't work on the RD. I think WP is a bit censorious on the RD which is a sort of irony in itself given the much quoted 'no censorship' pillar that it is built on. I really love the say-anything format that Yahoo answers follows. Cerebrally it is often depressingly awful with it's text script questions and scary exhibitions of scientific ignorance and interweaving of reality and fantasy, but, hey each to his own and at least we have the freedom to display our ignorance, and boy I realise mine when I read some of the answers here on the RD! I'm back.

Hello Julia:

Thank you for your messages. I went away before Christmas and returned home yesterday. In between, I was in Mexico City where it was warm (though not as warm as I expected), trying to communicate in abysmal Spanish. I was fortunate not to be pushed in front of a subway train.

The pattern was 1) I would laboriously construct and rehearse a sentence, then unleash it on the waiting public, 2) They, if they understood it at all, would respond in rapid Spanish, which I would not understand. 3) I would spend the next while trying to express my request differently.

I think a big part of the problem was that by saying anything in Spanish, I gave the highly erroneous impression that I understood "some" Spanish.

The problem is exemplified by the old story of Joe, who immigrated from Europe to North America, with no knowledge of English. Joe had a buddy who helped him get a job on a construction site, and who taught him to say "apple pie and coffee" in English. Each day at lunchtime Joe went to the restaurant and said "apple pie and coffee". This worked fine until he tired of this diet and asked his friend how to order something else for a change. His friend taught him to say "ham sandwich and coffee". So the next day Joe went to the restaurant and happily said to the waiter "ham sandwich and coffee". The waiter replied "white or rye?". Joe said "apple pie and coffee".

I would be forever in your debt, because I wouldn't pay you back, if you would do whatever you think is necessary for the article above and beyond what I've done, like cats or refs or whatever might need to be done about my having used pics from the French article unmodified. As for the diacritics, I too believe in consistency, and I did sort of try to keep that, leaving the diacritics in the actual French stuff and leaving them off the English, but I'm sure I was somewhat sloppy. SETI theology

Hi Julia,. There are several ways to approach your question. If SETI's failure is due to the fact that there are no other sentient creatures:

1. This gives great heart to those who believe that humankind is the be all and end all of creation.
2. There must have been a Creator.
3. There is no spontaneous generation, and perhaps there is no evolution. What seems to be evolutionary force is God's causation.
4. God actively prevents humanity from destroying itself.
5. We are just damn lucky.
6. Etc. I'm sure you can think of a lot more.
   

Of course SETI's failure does not prove any of the above. There are always alternate explanations.
If you want my personal beliefs, "I'll show you mine if you show me yours".

I meant the British Apprentice, which is the only one I've seen. I only know one joke, it's kind of rude (no leather though, unfortunately) but I'm sure you can take that in your elegant stride. A man is trudging across the desert with his camel and his thoughts turn, as men's thoughts inevitably do, to sexual congress. Frustrated by his lack of recent activity, he contemplates trying it on with the beast of burden, but dismisses the thought as repulsive. Eventually however he can resist no longer, gets behind the camel and attempts to "enter" it. He has no luck though, the creature wriggles around, bites him and won't co-operate. A few days later, still appalled by the idea, he tries again but once again the beast turns round, bites him and refuses to keep still. His frustration mounts even further. Finally, after several more days of weary trudging, a beautiful girl appears from behind a sand dune, dressed in a diaphonous gown. She approaches him eagerly, saying "Oh, it's been months since I've had a man, I'll do anything for you, anything!" To which the man replies, "Right love, if you could just hold this camel's head still..." Tell me your country music joke – I love country music. Copyright problem: George Chapman (healer)

On February 6, 2010, the article George Chapman (healer) was tagged for investigation into potential copyright infringement of [3]. Investigation shows that when you created the article in July 2007, you did incorporate substantial content from that article.

For one example, compare the following from your contribution:

Chapman's "surgery" on his patients was carried out on their spirit (or etheric) bodies, from which the benefits were transferred to the subjects' physical bodies. Among other cancers, he was credited with curing an inoperable and malignant brain tumour, as well as with improving various eye conditions and even lengthening a patient's leg. Chapman himself maintained that the purpose of his healing mission was to prove that there was life after death; he said the healings were secondary.

White horse (mythology)

Hi Julia, there is a discussion about a segment of this article regarding whether mythology surrounding the white donkey (in reference to Jewish tradition) should or should not be included in a "horse" article. As there is only one editor on each side of the issue, I am inviting some of the folks who were actively involved in creating the article and adding substantive content to take a peek and weigh in.
