Managing a conflict of interest

edit

Hello, Sigurd Hole. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Sigurd Hole, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Bbb23 (talk) 12:45, 6 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi! I spent quite some time updating the wikipedia article about myself, as it was not up to date. Am I not allowed to update information about myself?
Sigurd Sigurd Hole (talk) 12:53, 6 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Do let me know if any of the things I wrote was out of place, then I will change accordingly. I spent a few hours doing updates and it is really frustrating to see everything disappear like it just did..

I see now one is not allowed to write about oneself. Ok - I guess that makes sense. Anyway, I would greatly appreciate if you could send me the lates version of the text I made as I put a lot of effort into creating it. Then I can ask whomever wrote my article in the first place to update it. Sigurd Hole (talk) 13:01, 6 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'm afraid that's not how it works. First, you have to declare you conflict (per the instructions above) on your userpage. Second, you can then use the article talk page to request changes to the article. Each change must be reliably sourced and sufficiently noteworthy to include in the article. I strongly suggest that your requests be small rather than a large amount of material as that would be much harder for another editor to evaluate. Different editors have contributed to your article over the years, not a single one. The editor who initially created the article was blocked a long time ago. In any event, your requests should not normally be addressed to a single editor but to the Wikipedia "community". You will also have to be patient because almost no one on Wikipedia "watches" your article.--Bbb23 (talk) 13:11, 6 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
I am sorry, but I do not understand what it is I am required to do. I cannot see "declare conflict" anywhere above. Do you mean "disclose conflict?" I do not even have a user page, but I guess to resolve this then I have to get one? Sigurd Hole (talk) 13:19, 6 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Yes, "disclose". You don't "have to get" a userpage; you just click on the red "Sigurd Hole", and you can then create your userpage. Editing at Wikipedia is tough; as it states at the top of this page, you can ask questions about how to do things at the WP:Teahouse. Editors there are used to helping new editors and will no doubt be more patient than I am. :-) --Bbb23 (talk) 13:26, 6 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
I find your patience to be just what I needed:-) Thank you for your help, and for pointing out my mistake. At first I was a bit put off, as you might imagine when having spent quite some time updating - and then have all deleted. But now, in my newly found enlightenment , I am glad you interfered and I totally get the point. It would not be sound to have people create their own wiki-pages, not even little watched pages of Norwegian double bassists :-) I will pursue the matter like you advice and hopefully my wiki-page will be updated eventually - even if it takes some time!
