Query on New Contributors' Help Page edit

Hi there. IN response to your query on the above page, what happened is another administrator blanked your user page because he felt that it was not within the guidelines set out for user page use. He probably should have left more of a note than he did, honestly, but ah well. What I've done is gone back to the previous revision of that page, and copied the source over to a sandbox page for you to edit there - it's now at User:SJSJR2D2/Sandbox.

Having said that, there are some problems with the material as you've presented it - most importantly, the subject doesn't seem to meet our notability guidelines. The copy as you've presented it is highly promotional of the journal, but does nothing to indicate why it is important enough to be considered for a page on Wikipedia. To be deemed notable, we need to see multiple, non-trivial reliable sources that have discussed the subject in a substantial manner. We also need to be sure that the articles are not written in a style that suggests they're for marketing or advertising, and there's also the concern that if you're involved with the project in any way, you may have a conflict of interest that should be considered. As it is, the version on the sandbox page would be quickly deleted.

If you think you can clear up these issues with the article, please feel free to keep working on it in the sandbox. You may find this page useful in determining what needs to be done. When you reach a point where you think it could stand up in mainspace, please drop me a note on my talk page and I'll take a look at it for you at that point. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask me. Tony Fox (arf!) 19:22, 28 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

This looks like it covers anything I would have said very well indeed. However if you do have other queries then do let me know. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 11:56, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey there; sorry for the delay in responding to you - holidays have kept me from the computer for a while. A quick glance at the article draft is all I've been able to do so far; I hate to say it, but it still reads like something that you'd find on a personal web space and not as an encyclopedia article. You use the word "our" in there, which is totally wrong for an encyclopedia article - these articles are supposed to be informational, not promotional, and anything that uses possessives like that is not going to be informational. I don't see the required outside sources yet; if there is nobody writing about the subject, then it's likely not notable enough for Wikipedia. I'll take a closer look later today, probably, and see if there's anything else that stands out specifically. Tony Fox (arf!) 17:13, 5 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Here are a few journals that look pretty good to me; while they don't have a lot of cited references, they do have notable alumni that help with notability: Boston College Law Review; Columbia Law Review; Stanford Law Review. I've also asked for some assistance from knowledgeable people at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Academic Journals who hopefully will be able to answer some of your questions with a bit more background knowledge than I can offer.
