Pidgin

Hello Royote, and thank you for your recent edit on Pidgin. I agree that there needs to be some more citations there, but I think having one "citation needed" for every line of text is overkill - it makes the article a lot less readable. Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

IPA Transcriptions

Hi Royote.

Thank you for comments. I shall take virtually everything you say on board. You are clearly far more experienced than I when it comes to Wikipedia.

However I do just have one area I thought I should raise if I might.

You mention that I should use non-regional pronunciations. All of mine are already RP.

I write sounds literally as people say them rather than using the (IMO) slightly inaccurate usages of some aspects of the IPA that have crept in over time by convention. For instance in the article about scones I said that the two ways of saying the word are /sgɒn/ and /sgəʊn/. Tradition dictates that they are /skɒn/ and /skoun/. Actually I think those would be hard to pronounce: I’m not sure I’ve come across anyone who can make the /k/ sound after a /s/ anymore than I’m aware of having met anyone who could make a /p/ sound after a /s/ sound – ‘Spain’ is actually /sbein/ and not /spein/ as the latter would be very difficult to say, I should have thought. There’s a good reason why the Welsh spell the word ‘sport’ “sbort” and the Scottish Gaels spell their word for knife “sgian” unlike the Irish Gaels who spell the word with a “c”. The Welsh and the Scots are two of the very few Europeans who really feel and see the sounds in the way that perhaps a lot of the rest of us don’t. (Indeed look at the Gaelic for “scone” – see the “g” there?)

I don’t know if I’ve made my case very clearly but I hope you can see where I’m coming from.

I’m always open to discussion of course.
