Welcome! edit

Hi there, RandomGalen, and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm a regular contributor here, and when I notice on the recent changes log that a new editor has registered, I like to send them a welcome message - that's how I ended up on your talk page.

If you've never edited here before, there are a few useful links that you might want to look at, designed to help newcomers learn the ropes:

Here are a few features of Wikipedia that I find particularly helpful:

  • If you leave a message on a talk page, you can sign it with four tildes (~~~~), which will automatically produce your name and a date stamp when you save the page
  • The "Show preview" button allows you to look at what your post will look like before you save it - that way, you can proofread what you've written and not have to back and correct spelling mistakes, failed links, etc.
  • You can create a watchlist for yourself that will keep a record of any changes made to a page that interests you.

There are plenty of other features and facets of Wikipedia, many of which I probably haven't even discovered myself, so have fun looking around and finding them.

If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions.

Again, welcome! - Tapir Terrific, 19:08, 8 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

comment please edit

In Talk:Hezbollah#Jospin, User:Bertilvidet keeps removing a double-sourced statement about the PM of France who said Hezbollah was carrying out "terrorist" activities against Israel. He argues that because Jospion is not the PM of France anymore and was not during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict, his statement does not belong. However, Hezbollah carries such activities long before this conflict and if the PM of France made a statement during his time in office, it is worth a note in Hezbollah#Designation as a 'terrorist' organization. Thank you. Shamir1 19:45, 10 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Military and economic aid in the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict edit

I see that you're involved with this article, I found a seven page report on US aid to the Israelis that may be of great use; it's entitled U.S. Millitary Assistance and Arms Transfers to Israel: U.S. Aid, Companies Fuel Israeli Military by Frida Berrigan and William D. Hartung from this web site here. Click here to download the PDF file. --Inahet 16:33, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

AMA request edit

Tewfik is pursuing an edit war at Military and economic aid in the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict. This is despite being given numerous examples of evidence backing up the case for inclusion of detail on aid to Israel and despite having this corroborated as a necessary balance in the article by other interested editors.

Despite the arguments of me and other editors he persists in removing it. He has adopted a number of arguments to justify this. The validity of these arguments is in dispute by other editors but Tewfik has ignored the protests and requests to stop the reversions and deletions.

Given his attitude I feel there is no other way but to take this matter to arbitration and have lodged a request for assistance here. I did ask Tewfik twice to signal if he would stop acting unilaterally and take note of either what other editors were saying, or take part in mediation/arbitration. Both times he refused to answer and only persisted in claiming that his point was being missed. I would like some assistance in pursuing this matter.

Tewfiks reversions often happen without discussion having taken place. This was the case when I was using an IP address, he just ignored the arguments on the talk page for the inclusion of the detail and reverted it. Having now secured an ID that I use for posting he has taken to responding on the talk then reverting afterwards. This is despite having no new arguments to bring to the discussion. This is also after a series of postings I and other editors made arguing for inclusion of the detail on the talk page. He has either chosen to ignore these calls or refused to treat the sources with good faith. Describing the World Policy Institute as a "minor organisation" and citing WP:V and maintaining that even though Congressional documents describe billions in military aid & defense sales to Israel each year there is "no evidence" of a connection between the makeup of the IDF operating in Lebanon and aid to Israel. He has also accused me of WP:OR despite the aid being a well known and understood component in the defense of Israel.

Per the dispute resolution guide I first tried the Third Opinion avenue here but it appears not to have worked. I then made a prolonged attempt to reason with Tewfik and invited other editors to comment on what was taking place. Tewfik termed this "spammming"- an indication of the wikilawyering style I and other users have been battling against. Trying to reason with Tewfik was totally unproductive and degenerated into him continually asserting that the sources and connection they showed were either

  • non notable in the context of the conflict,
  • that the detail was not referenced,
  • that the detail constituted original research on my part, or
  • that his understanding of UN Resolution 1559 ruled that Hezbollah was illegal and in that context aid to Israel was "artificial equation of details".

Tewfik also accused me of trying to offset or diminish the allegations of military aid to Hezbollah from Iran/Syria- this is despite the fact that those details werent even present in the article when I began editing it and were only subsequently edited in by him following the removal of the aid to Israel summary.

Original inclusion of detail under existing section headings by me under 82.29.227.171: [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]

Tewfik's reverts/deletes of the Israel aid detail: [10] [11] [12] [13] [14]

Reverts by me reincluding the detail under RandomGalen & IP 82.29.227.171: [15] [16] [17]

Revert by Paraphelion reincluding the detail: [18]

Revert by Inahet reincluding the detail: [19]

There have been other 1 revert so far to remove the detail by Tasc [20] but no effort has been made by him to explain why. This is the culture of edit warfare that Tewfik has promoted on the page by his unilateral action and perception of the article as being in his "domain".

I find this user to be argumentative, belligerent, uncooperative, and largely unaware of the subject matter. However my specific complaint is about the lack of balance that is being deliberately promoted in the article and his edit warfare to impose that imbalance on everyone else. I believe he is employing a filibuster and double standard of his own devising to the article which makes the article fail set standards of WP:NPOV and balance.

While he is happy to see foreign aid to Hezbollah listed in the article for the last 5 years he refuses to allow a brief summary of aid that Israel received during the same time period appear. Both combatants are using that respective aid in the fighting so I concur with fellow editors that in the interests of balance it should appear. RandomGalen 19:57, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Please keep in mind though that we are currently discussiong his alleged wikilawyering, and doing so may disrupt the conversation. We are trying to focus on one thing at a time. Wikipedia:Vandalism edit

Please review the policy on vandalism. It is extremely bad form to accuse someone of vandalism if they haven't engaged in it. TewfikTalk 15:13, 16 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I repeat, please stop calling good-faith edits vandalism. TewfikTalk 15:19, 16 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I certainly did read the sources, and while I'm not interested in arguing, you seem to be aware based on your revision that the initial passage made claims unsupported by those sources. That said, even if you were correct, it is extremely improper to label a content dispute as vandalism, which is why I provided the link above so that you can understand exactly what it is and isn't. And my point vis-a-vis the Hezbollah, was that if the Red Cross or whoever aren't saying who attacked them, that means that they don't know, and it is certainly not our place to assume one side or the other. Good day, TewfikTalk 16:08, 16 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
