Reminder + Suggestion edit

When using template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template.

Blank map of India edit

Hi Sage! Thanks for your comments on FPC. I've resolved the issue on the border inconsistency. As for the other borders, the same would be visible on full or higher resolutions. I've replied to the issue here: Image talk:India-locator-map-blank.svg. Please let me know if this resolves your objection. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:15, 13 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for responding. I still find some things about it problematic:
 • (minor) The two tiny disputed area 1 regions with the dash-dot lines on the inside and the undisputed line outside have smaller dash-dot lines than everywhere else.
 • Near the top, by the small section of undisputed border, the color regions and the line borders do not match up. There is some disputed area 2 coloring in what, from the lines, looks like part of disputed area 1.
 • The internal pure-dot line near the top does not seem to demarcate any separate region, based on the colors, and appears to be completely inside the rest of the claimed by India regions, based on borders.--ragesoss 06:37, 13 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

You do have a really good pair of eyes! :)

 1. I'll be fixing that
 2. That area is the Siachen Glacier. Strictly speaking, the area is undemarcated. I'll have to think of a better way of representing it.
 3. The pure dot line forms the defacto boundary between India and Pakistan.

Thanks for your review, regards =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:47, 13 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Sage: Here's an update:

 1. Fixed those border areas
 2. The area which had disparate colouring is now fixed. It's the Siachen Glacier and the boundary there is undemarcated.

I hope I have addressed your objection? Thanks and regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 12:51, 13 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Sage! I've changed the boundary of the undemarkated area in the Siachen region to a dashed line. Have I now addressed all your objections? Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:38, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image:15th century egyptian anatomy of horse.jpg edit

I seem to recall that the book I took it from was terribly unhelpful in the caption department, and on top of that I'm out of town until June 6, so I can't even double check the book for more info. I agree that the caption needs expansion, but unfortunately I don't think there's anything I can do about it just now. I'll take a look when I get back home. — Laura Scudder 21:22, 18 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

P. S. I don't know which I liked better, Hooke's flea, Haeckel's aquatics, Vesalius's flayed human being, or the fancy French paper's depiction of Darwin among the monkeys. It was definitely a lot of fun. --arkuat (talk) 05:43, 20 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Haeckel on de.wikisource edit

Hi. Just letting you know I suggested on the German wikisource to turn the Haeckel prints into a Wikisource book: http://de.wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:Skriptorium#Kunstformen_der_Natur

There seems to be some interest, and there's a bit of conversation going on about it, but I don't speak any German (babelfish helps a little). Anyway just a heads up. Cheers. —Pengo 12:35, 7 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I hope you like it, and have a great day! Big hug, Phædriel tell me - 17:57, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Portal edit

Thanks for supporting the proposal to create a portal for U.S. government (and politics?) topics. The proposal has passed, and I copied my draft over the the portal namespace. It's at Portal:Government of the United States. If you are at all interested in making any updates, improvements, changes, etc., feel free to stop by the portal talk page or just go in and make the edits. In its current state, the portal is just a starting point. Thanks again for the support. --Aude (talk contribs) 03:01, 27 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Darwinism and racism edit

You removed a link to The Mis-portrayal of Darwin as a Racist from the Charles Darwin article on the justifiable grounds that "WP is not the place to advertise minor websites of original research". While basically agreeing with this point, the article seemed to me interesting and valid enough to justify covering this significant issue on the Darwinism page, with the article being linked in a footnote along with relevant direct cites. I've suggested this in more detail at talk:Darwinism, and your thoughts on this will be welcome. ..dave souza, talk 19:21, 29 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

history of science edit

Brya, you might be interested in Wikipedia:WikiProject History of Science. Keep up the good work.--ragesoss 22:43, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the note, but I had already noticed this project. I am only marginally interest in this, as wikipedia is empty in all too many fields, some of which look more important to me. Also, there is a pretty determined campaign waged against me, which rather limits my options to do anything. Brya 14:21, 2 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

AID edit

In response to your perceptive comment Wikipedia talk:Article Improvement Drive#Retention time and reviving old noms, I assume you followed the protracted discussion starting somewhere around here. You may see that I was not entirely in favour of the proposals at the time, although I eventually voted for them. The problem seems to stem from what we call the "summer hole". At WP:SCOTM we've also made drastic changes in order to keep up morale. So I basically agree with you and would be interested in discussing it further, just wanted to check that you were aware of the earlier talk. - Samsara (talkcontribs) 14:02, 4 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Your "example" edit

Your oppose vote was accompanied by an example which was not to any of my edits. Can you change that? --ScienceApologist 15:33, 7 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

There is no rule regarding what you can link to on RfA, of course, but if you will indulge me and read your opposition vote, you make it seem like you are linking to an instance of me personally attacking someone. I'm just pointing out that by the principle of least astonishment I was surprised to have you link to a third-person hearsay rather than the horse's mouth, so to speak. --ScienceApologist 15:56, 7 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for addressing that. Your comments are much clearer now! --ScienceApologist 16:25, 7 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I may have spoke too soon. You wrote that I have a "tendency to cause more disputes [than] resolve" and as evidence cite Flying Jazz's objection to the conflict between me an Iantresman. Could I ask that you reword this? I actually pride myself on the fact that I have successfully resolved many disputes, I would say on an editor-by-editor basis that I have been successfully resolved more than I have caused (per my answer to part 3, for example). --ScienceApologist 16:39, 7 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks again. I'll stop pestering you. --ScienceApologist 16:51, 7 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Reply to Reply edit

Well, at least I know what your WP nick means -- had me going for quite some time there. I'm not sure why I wrote supernatural when I meant "mildy anti-science", and I've corrected that error by striking supernatural and insering the other. Can I plead mental confusion created by 3 kids running around making a lot of noise?
As for SA and incivility, I've never noticed it as a pattern on his part, but I think we all have different thresholds as to what incivility really means. In any case, I think the idea of what an admin is has gotten out of hand -- they are really just regular users with a few extra tools. Most will intentionally refrain from using their admin powers in a dispute in which they are involved -- and I don't think that SA would be any different. But, I respect your reason regarding incivility, but I would rather have seen that as your primary reason, rather than "Combative editor who (as one might guess from his name) consistently pushes for a scientific...point of view". (BTW, an apologist is not inherently combative.)
In any case, I corrected my flub and would like you to know that I intended no slight. Take care, •Jim62sch• 09:56, 10 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism on History of Science Portal edit

Hi,

In case you haven't seen it, an anonymous editor (87.109.49.76) has been changing the name of the Persian astrolabe file and breaking the links to the image -- once converting it to Arabic, once deleting the nationality entirely. I fixed it for the moment; we'll have to see what happens. It sounds like one of those silly Arab/Persian nationality edits. --SteveMcCluskey 02:58, 22 August 2006 (UTC)aReply
