Speedy deletion nomination of Sneh Chakraburtty edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Sneh Chakraburtty requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Sneh Chakraburtty edit

Wikipedia's core requirement for determining whether or not a person is notable enough to have an article on here is the presence or absence of reliable sources about the topic — that is, evidence that she's garnered coverage in real media, such as newspaper or magazine articles about her. This isn't a site where anybody is entitled to an article just because you can prove that they exist — regardless of the copyright on the text itself, an article can still be deleted if real sources which demonstrate real notability aren't present.

Her own web page and the webpage of the company that publishes her books aren't sufficient in and of themselves to demonstrate that she's notable, because they're primary sources whose purpose is to promote or advertise her work — our primary test for determining whether or not someone is notable enough for a Wikipedia article is whether or not she's already garnered significant coverage in media independent of herself. That's not to say that her own webpage or the pages of groups and companies directly affiliated with her can't be cited in the article at all, because they're still acceptable as supplementary sources once notability has been proven by citing some proper media sources, but they aren't valid sourcing to justify a Wikipedia article by themselves.

Basically, what we need is evidence that newspaper or magazine editors, television or radio producers, or other people who have time and space and resource limitations on what they can realistically cover, and who thus need to apply editorial judgement to filter what they do or don't give attention to and what they do or don't say about those topics, have deemed her to be prominent or interesting or relevant enough a topic to merit the coverage. It's not a comment on her worth as a person or the value of her work — it's just that we have to maintain certain standards of article quality on here, and one of those is the use of reliable media sources so that we can ensure that our content is accurate and verifiable and relevant to an international audience. • Furthermore, Wikipedia does not have articles on people or organisations because we approve of the work done by those people or organisations, and wish to publicise their work or help to "spread the word". Doing so is contrary to the policy that Wikipedia is not a medium for promotion of any sort. JamesBWatson (talk) 09:56, 26 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
