Grant Kauffman is an educational leader who has and continues to make a great impact in education in South Africa. He has contributed to research in various fields related to education, educational leadership, counseling psychology and strategic leadership in education. He is a bold, creative free thinker who has often challenged the status-quo. A principled man who has created much controversy with his views on the current state of education. Highly respected by many in academia and disliked by those who have been challenged by his views on tertiary models, perceived obsession of higher education on university rankings, ethics of leadership in education and what he considers to be an archaic system which has little benefit for students in the 21st Century.

Grant Kauffman is currently the Deputy Director of Accelerated Education Enterprises (International Tertiary Liasion). He has previously served as the Head of Campus and Principal for two higher education brands of the Independent Institute of Education, Vice Principal of Sonrise Academy and served on numerous boards. He continues to provide mentorship (pro-bono) to underprivileged school leadership and boards and teaches history, life orientation and political science at under resourced schools. He also assists with drafting policies for private schools. He consults with public universities in South Africa on various issues and he has been outspoken on his views of the inadequacies of the National Benchmark Tests and the over complicated and politically motivated education system which is disadvantageous to the majority of students in South Africa. His research has into the various mechanisms which quality assure or measure performance have caused much debate in private and public Higher education.

He has gone so far as to state that political, corporate and religious agendas are at play in discriminating against private education curricula which are not considered to 'fit into the frameweork'. I'm a statement made in April 2013 on Radio 702, he said, "There are deliberate attempts to discredit systems which outperform the NSC in South Africa despite the fact that a number of private schooling systems far outperform their NSC counterparts in higher education. The research has been accepted by many in academia which proves this as fact; however, it is apparent that a number of stakeholders are hiding behind contradictory statements and policies which are open to interpretation".

Kauffman has a strong belief that the solution to South Africa's 'educational crisis', lies in the adoption of multi-grade classes with a stronger focus on holistic education. He also maintains that the education system only measures particular types of intelligence and that although the current teacher training curriculum is good in theory, it is not practically implementable. (He claims) the NSC is bolstered in former model C schools by providing for the shortfalls in the system. Therefore, the current system is neglecting the 'previously disadvantaged'. He claims that as much as 80% of students are currently disadvantaged due to the lack of progress of the education system.

Most recently, he has stated that the fees must fall campaign is symptomatic of a deeper issue in education and that more noise should be made by those in positions of power, regarding the a paling state of school education (funding, teachers, curriculum, safety, resources). Next edit →
