WikiProject Ice Hockey Newsletter

Dear Pparazorback/Archive 1! You are receiving as you are a member of WikiProject Ice Hockey There's been more new thing going on at WP:HOCKEY, and I think this will help you to stay informed. Since the last newsletter sent out in August, there's been great changes. Read on to find out! Maxim(talk)

This just in:
Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy has just been promoted to featured list status, while the bot was delivering the newsletter. Maxim(talk) 02:02, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

And I've just promoted Art Ross Trophy. And Clarence S. Campbell Bowl is at FLC. This should be the last update. Maxim(talk) 00:40, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
New recognized content

By Maxim

Especially due to the featured topic drive, there have been many new featured lists promoted concerning NHL awards. Here's the full list of all the 13 FL's promoted since the last newsletter.[1][2]

  1.   Hart Memorial Trophy
  2.   James Norris Memorial Trophy
  3.   Vezina Trophy
  4.   Conn Smythe Trophy
  5.   Frank J. Selke Trophy
  6.   Lady Byng Memorial Trophy
  7.   Lester B. Pearson Award
  8.   Calder Memorial Trophy
  9.   Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy
  10.   King Clancy Memorial Trophy
  11.   Jack Adams Award
  12.   Presidents' Trophy
  13.   List of Calgary Flames players

There have been no new good articles or featured articles. Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy has been given A-Class status due to multiple issues raised at FLC.

  1. ^ The last one, List of Calgary Flames players, is the only one not associated with the featured topic drive.
  2. ^ At the time of publishing, there were 5 lists at WP:FLC and 2 lists in the "Holding cell", as there's been an accepted guideline to not put more that 5 trophy lists at the same time to, "compensate for the sanity of the reviewers".
Did You Know?

There have been 4 new articles featured in the Did You Know section? on the Main Page since August.

Featured Topic Drive

By Maxim

Started by User:Scorpion0422, the aim of this drive is to make NHL awards a featured topic. A featured topic is basically a set of very high quality articles (good articles and featured articles/lists). In this case, the topic is NHL awards. Many users have helped, including Scorpion0422, Resolute, Serte, Hasek is the best, Maxim, Croat Canuck, Spike Wilbury, FutureNJGov, and T Rex/Dinosaur puppy. The progress has been very good; there are 12 featured lists promoted, and 2 good articles:

  1.   Hart Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  2.   James Norris Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  3.   Vezina Trophy (Scorpion)
  4.   Conn Smythe Trophy (Serte)
  5.   Frank J. Selke Trophy (FutureNJGov)
  6.   Lady Byng Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  7.   Lester B. Pearson Award (Scorpion)
  8.   Calder Memorial Trophy (Croat Canuck)
  9.   Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy (Maxim)
  10.   King Clancy Memorial Trophy (Maxim)
  11.   Jack Adams Award (Maxim)
  12.   Presidents' Trophy (Scorpion)
  13.   Stanley Cup (Earlier collaboration, very many involved)
  14.   Traditions and anecdotes associated with the Stanley Cup (Maxim)

Check the project page if you are interested in helping out. Although it's closer to being done than not, there's still work to be done. The next topic that might be tackled is Stanley Cup, but this remains purely speculative and in discussion.

Carolina Hurricanes

An anon user had earlier added an 'A' to Ray Whitney. I suspected Whitney wasn't an alternate captain, but wasn't sure. Before Kevyn Adams was traded, the 'Canes' did have (serving under Captain Rod Brind'Amour) 3 alternate captains (Adams, Stillman & Wesley). Teams do have more then 2 alternates with their captain though (see the Thrashers, Blackhawks, Blue Jackets, Panthers, Kings, Devils, Coyotes and Blues. GoodDay 22:01, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

not a problem. I knew that Whitney wore the "A" just after Kevyn Adams was traded, and continued while Wesley was injured, but I noticed he did not have the "A" on his jersey the last couple of games. I will make note of that trend in future games I watch (I DVR all of them, have NHL Center Ice). Pparazorback 03:44, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
I guessing it's temporary (Whitney's 'A'), Stillman is injured & out of the lineup. GoodDay 19:28, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
Due to Stillman's absence from the lineup (day-to-day injury), I've unwiki-linked Whitney's 'A' (interim alternate). GoodDay 19:37, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
Not a problem, 'til Stillman returns, then. GoodDay 19:51, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
Checked the 'Canes' official website, I haven't been able to find where it says Stillman was put on IR. GoodDay 04:43, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
Nevermind, I've found it. Stillman is on the IR. GoodDay 04:47, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
Yep, looks like Whitney's a permanent 'A'. GoodDay 00:43, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Franchise Record Edits

Greetings - You may have noticed that I modified the Franchise Sweep records on 5 NHL Teams. The original individual who added the records to the 5 teams included Carolina as one of 5 franchises that have never been swept in the playoffs (of those who have ever qualified for the playoffs). I edited this back down to 4 teams, because the current page for the Carolina Hurricanes show franchise records for individuals in Hartford, and if those records are going to be included, then the playoff history for Hartford also needs to be considered. Hartford was swept twice, once in 1979/80 and again in 1988/89, both by Montreal. If my thought process is wrong on this, please let me know. Pparazorback 02:22, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

You're correct on your interpretation. GoodDay 17:19, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

2006-07 NHL Season-by-Team articles

Thank you very much for your recent efforts to update the 2006-07 NHL Season-by-Team articles. I had been keeping up with them myself for quite some time, but recently many of them had fallen woefully behind. Thanks for updating them! Skudrafan1 00:55, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Wow, your method sure beats typing the wikicode one game at a time, as I have been doing! I'll stick with maintaining the 2006-07 Buffalo Sabres season and you can handle the others, if you want. :) Skudrafan1 01:16, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

The Golfer Infobox

Thank you for adding it to Zach Johnson's page, just keep in mind that the Major Championships results section is not only meant for wins, but for the player's best result in each major. Thanks once again. Supertigerman 01:00, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Category:Sorel Black Hawks alumni

Thanks for moving those four articles to the proper category. I don't know why I didn't realize that is really all I needed to do. Skudrafan1 03:14, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

New Jersey Devils

Thanks for settleing this dispute, about the Devils alternate captains. I knew, Langenbrunner had replaced Rafalski, but couldn't find a source. Njdhockey had a (outdated) source & as he/she was a novice at Wikipedia, it was difficult to persuade him/her my way. Though, I knew I was correct, I chose not to enter an 'Edit war' with him/her (instead, going along with him/her), I think (in the short term) I made the right choice. Again, thanks for settleing the matter. GoodDay 17:12, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Carolina Hurricanes

Hello Pparazorback, I've checked the Canes official website's roster. They still have an 'A' (alternate captain) listed next to Ray Whitney. GoodDay 21:05, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

The people at the 'Canes website' probably accidently removed the 'A' while adding Leighton's jersey number. PS- I'll add my name to the WikiProject membership. GoodDay 22:35, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Article Improvement

By Maxim

Upon some discussion on the WikiProject talk page, the Article Improvement Drive page was revamped by Krm500 and Maxim. It was renamed Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey/Article Improvement, and it includes two section. The first section is called articles in dire need of improvement. It list articles, usually important, that are in very poor shape. The second section is called requested help. Users list an article they request help improving a certain article, which will facilitate collaboration, which is the aim of any WikiProject. There is one article currently listed there, Henrik Lundqvist, here. The goal is to at least get it to Good article status.

Diacritics

By Maxim

In the past few weeks, there has been quite heated discussion about the use of diacritics in article name. The current guideline is using diacritics in the pages of articles of all player names which require them, but redirects are exempt.

Task forces

By Maxim
There have been two new task forces started within the WikiProject to coordinate major topics.

Sweden Ice Hockey task force

This task force was initiated by Krm500. Its current goal is to improve Henrik Lundqvist to Good or Featured article status. It covers all Swedish clubs, leagues and competitions and associated articles, players and coaches that are Swedish, or have played/coached for a Swedish club, and arenas in Sweden. They plan to eventually operate as a sort of a sub-project, which will have its own articles for creation, ranking importance and quality of articles, and co-ordinate article improvement. Its current members are Krm500, Bamsefar75, and CLAES.

New Jersey Devils task force

This task force was initiated by Bsroiaadn. Its goal is to improve New Jersey Devils to Featured Topic status. Although it currently meets the required article count, the task force wishes to improve it further. Its area of coverage is very similar to the Sweden Ice Hockey task force. Its members are Bsroiaadn, JHMM13, FutureNJGov, Sportskido8, Michael Greiner, JRWalko, and Soxrock.

Requested Images

By Maxim
After discussion on the WikiProject talk page, Serte created a page for Requested Images. The page encourages users to license images for use on articles. The page also has section to request images for players, arenas, game situations, miscellaneous, and team and league logos. The page has been quite popular; since it was created on July 21, there have been six completed requests. There are four currently outstanding requests:

Article assessement completed

By Maxim
On July 12, Kaiser matias announced that he had completed assessing all the articles with a {{ice hockey}} tag, sorting them into Category:Unassessed Ice Hockey articles. Kaiser matias has ranked about 9000 articles in that category, and most were stubs, and "have no information at all", according to him. Everybody is encouraged to expand the stubs into real articles. This effort took around 5 months. A big thanks goes to Kaiser matias from me and all the project.

Hello WikiProject Ice Hockey/Participant

I am an advisor to the National Hockey League. With your help over the next few months I plan to review and correct any information on wikipedia relating to the National Hockey League, its franchises, players, executives and partership organisations. I am here to provide you with information. Your work is appreciated. --NHLsource 18:14, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Hurricanes

As you can probably tell from my name, I am a huge Hurricanes fan; however, I do realize about the edit and am not at all offended. It would get pretty long especially with Detroit and Chicago. I have a question on the 2007-08 season. If it is not going to be a problem, I do have the whole season (like no one hasn't!) and I was wondering if I could fill the rest in or will that also have problem with space. It is on 2007-08 Carolina Hurricanes season and hopefully you can return this message ASAP. Go 'Canes. Hurricane06 12:36, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

2007-08 Season for Carolina Hurricanes

As you have possibly realized, I started trying to take over using the Season Standings for the Hurricanes on this link; however, I don't know how to find the attendance to put into the board. Just asking for advice and sources to find this so I can help a lot more. Also, one more thing, can you tell me how to create the colors and the code names for them. I just copied and pasted onto the one I updated; however, I would like to know what the codes are and how to put them on. Thanks, Hurricane06 (talk) 12:58, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Hello Pparazorback, why did you remove the semi-protection? It was put there to prevent the anon editors from updating the article. GoodDay 18:44, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks!

Thank you for the codes and site. Now it feels like I can do it all by myself. I am wondering about being on the NHL Wiki group. I put my name on it but wasn't sure if it came off or they just assume I would do it. Answer back ASAP! Thanks, Hurricane06 (talk) 14:58, 5 December 2007 (UTC).

Archiving

Thanks Pparazorback, I'll be checking it over. GoodDay (talk) 23:32, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Thought of working together:

I was wondering if I can take over with the Hurricanes season work. I can do the schedule and the record stuff easily now, as you can see on the page. Since you also work with Carolina Hurricanes things, I thought if you can do the main page while I do the current seasons for the Hurricanes, we won't run into each other while working on what we need to do. If you have any other thoughts or comments or your say on this thought, write back. This, I thought, would be easier since both of us are working on the Hurricanes site. Oh, and by the way, have you looked at my quote on my main page. It is kind of cool. I used it in one of my speeches at school. Tell me how you feel about it and if you think it is a quote to go into the books. Thanks Hurricane06 (talk) 02:54, 9 December 2007 (UTC).

LSU Football

Hey, I think that change was correct. Alabama has a big rivalry against Tennessee, some argue bigger than Auburn. Auburn has a historic rivalry with Georgia. A pretty funny play on that rivalry is that when Minnesota was beating Alabama in Nashville's Music City Bowl a couple years ago, the Minnesota band, paying homage to the host state, unknowingly serenaded Alabama with Rocky Top as the game was winding down. Mdlawmba (talk) 21:02, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

Carolina vs. Philadelphia

The game between Carolina and Philly was a astounding one. If that puck in the shootout didn't keep going forward, I believe that Philadelphia would've found a way to win. Anyway, just thought that was kind of weird. Hurricane06 (talk) 03:30, 16 December 2007 (UTC).

Thought on the Season

Featured Topic Drive

By Maxim

The original featured topic drive, initiated by Scorpion0422, has concluded succesfully. National Hockey League awards is now a featured topic, with 24 articles in total. Of them, 20 are featured lists, one is a featured article, and the other three are trophy articles that were too short to become featured lists. Eight users signed up to help out, shown here. The next Featured Topic hasn't been decided upon, and the ideas and organization for it fell apart. If you have any ideas, don't hesitate to share them at WT:HOCKEY.

Notes
  • More editors are needed to help out with the newsletter. The newsletter creator doesn't have an infinite nor perfect supply of ideas, and thus he might omit some interesting news.
  • Portal:Ice hockey is being considered for featured status.
  • Should Chris Pronger have been suspended for more than eight games for stomping on Ryan Kesler? Vote here!
  • Help Patrik Stefan -- one of the greatest NHL draft busts -- become a GA status article.

I have accidentaly created a different new season for the Carolina Hurricanes and don't know how to delete it. If you can do it for me, the link is this one. I moved the actual article to the right one, but I can't delete the other one. Contact me on my page when you have done this and checked the right article for the right season. Oh, and by the way. I am glad that the Washington Capitals are out of the playoffs, however, I am not sure why someone would delete what I said about Ovechkin. I do realize that this isn't a blog page for him; however, I want the community to know how much of a ego he has. Can you explain this to me and possibly help find a way for me to actually get this out to the rest of the Wikipedians. If you can't that is fine. Reviewer permission

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 03:01, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

Making all 4 bags into the hole in Cornhole is indeed a Platypus!!!

Paparatziback, you're killing me! The common term down here in Houston for making all 4 bags into the hole is called a Platypus. Everyone knows that. Also, Michael King did start a game (aka "a challenge") with 17 consecutive tosses into the hole, which is called 4 Platypi. This is similar to someone in bowling making 3 consecutive strikes and calling that a Turkey.
