wow - rpotd edit

Wow, beautiful rpotd. Do you mind if I make that one one of the ones that recycle when there isn't a potd for that day? My rpotd is getting much less contributors recently, so I had to start a recycling system using m:ParserFunctions. GeorgeMoney (talk) 01:49, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

By all means, add it to the rotation. I'll see if I have anything else particularly impressive to contribute as well.  :-) --ghoti 21:40, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Year pages edit

I see that you've gone through some year pages unlinkifying dates. Please don't. On these pages, all dates must be linked. This is because Wikipedia allows the user to change how dates are displayed, and when the dates are not links, this formatting becomes totally messed up to anybody whose date format setting isn't the same as yours. -- Smjg 21:41, 25 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I looked for documentation on this before making these changes to standardize on a convention I saw inconsistently employed. The only thing I could find that made any reference to it was the Overlinking section of WP:MOS-L. The formatting of the wikisource at this level should have no effect on the rendered output. But I'd be happy to oblige your request. Can you point me at the WP guideline article that describes the exception you suggest?  ◉ ghoti 02:05, 26 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I see what you mean; the personal preferences can cause links that look like dates to be munged in rendering. I see your point. Personally, I'd consider this a bug in MediaWiki; wikilinks are text, and should not be translated on-the-fly any more than plaintext. But given that this is the way of the land, I'll follow it. Thanks for your note.  ◉ ghoti 02:16, 26 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

sffaudio.com links edit

Hi -- Thanks for your message about these links. Well, the site has ads, so I'd consider it commercial. In any case, if you look at all the articles they've been adding links to, IMO it's just completely inappropriate in every case. External links should be to materials that are the best stuff out there, not just some guy's site that he wants to promote.--24.52.254.62 02:37, 2 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

hiya edit

Dear PMC,

I noticed that you removed my link on the Newsletter page - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newsletter under External Links - May I ask why? The newsletter page discusses newsletters but volunteers no software information to the reader on how to create/manager them. I feel this would be very beneficial information.

Mikeloi 03:47, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

The link you added was for a commercial electronic mailing list hosting provider, not a reference to external information about newsletters. If there is useful information about mailing list software, you might add a link on Electronic mailing list to a list of software? On the other hand, Wikipedia is not an advertising medium; see WP:ADS for guidelines.  ◉ ghoti 03:55, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for Image:Bon Echo - Old Walt.png edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Bon Echo - Old Walt.png. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 21:05, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

route info? edit

Hi. How much detail do you figure is appropriate for route information? I added NE ridge to Bugaboo spire and could probably add a pitch-by-pitch description before my memory fades; too much? I could do kain rote and maybe lion's way (crescent towers), too.

I also have misc. pictures of some of the mountains on your todo list and some other wapta stuff, etcetera.

cheers, MikeWarren 17:30, 1 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: Drupal advert tag edit

You're right, I didn't leave any comments because I was in kind of a hurry, sorry about that.

I think some parts of the article read a lot like adverts... I mean things like "Drupal 5.0 will come with feature X" (maybe "it has been said that... [cite source]") or "Drupal achieves clean integration..." (without citing authoritative sources on integration cleanliness) or "Thankfully there are extensive support documentation and videos to help configure" ("thankfully" sounds biased), etc.

Besides that, I think it's a very good article overall.

I'll try to contribute better if I get the time! :-)

British Association of Mountain Guides edit

Hi Pmc,

I've decided to nominate the article British Association of Mountain Guides, which you created, for deletion, because I do not believe it is notable enough to pass WP:ORG. If you would like to participate in the discussion, see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/British Association of Mountain Guides.--Carabinieri 19:35, 13 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

AfD Nomination: Good Times Magazine (music) edit

An editor has nominated the article Good Times Magazine (music) for deletion, under the Articles for deletion process. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the nomination (also see What Wikipedia is not and Deletion policy). Your opinions on why the topic of the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome: participate in the discussion by editing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Good Times Magazine (music). Add four tildes like this ~~~~ to sign your comments. You can also edit the article Good Times Magazine (music) during the discussion, but do not remove the "Articles for Deletion" template (the box at the top of the article), this will not end the deletion debate. Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. Image copyright problem with Image:Jennys-promoshot.jpg edit

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Jennys-promoshot.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. MER-C 13:16, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image:Abbot_Pass_hut.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Abbot_Pass_hut.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast 22:33, 18 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.

Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MER-C 12:47, 11 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Copyright status of Anna Friz edit

Please do not post copyrighted material to Wikipedia without permission from the copyright holder, as you did to Anna Friz. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites (http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:9DXn6lANcdEJ:www.kunstradio.at/BIOS/frizbio.html+anna+friz+site:kunstradio.at&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us in this case) or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) then you should do one of the following:

  • If you have permission from the author leave a message explaining the details on the article Talk page and send an email with the message to "permissions-en (at) wikimedia (dot) org". See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for instructions.
  • If a note on the original website states that re-use is permitted under the GFDL or released into the public domain leave a note at Talk:Anna Friz with a link to where we can find that note;
  • If you own the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the GFDL, and note that you have done so on the article Talk page. Alternatively, you may create a note on your web page releasing the work under the GFDL and then leave a note at Talk:Anna Friz with a link to the details.

Otherwise, you are encouraged to rewrite this article in your own words to avoid any copyright infringement. After you do so, you should place a {{hangon}} tag on the article page and leave a note at Talk:Anna Friz saying you have done so. An administrator will review the new content before taking action.

It is also important that all Wikipedia articles have an encyclopedic tone and follow Wikipedia article layout. For more information on Wikipedia's policies, see Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If you want to edit constructively, take a look at the welcome page. Thank you.

I'm somewhat confused about your message concerning my deletion; the link provided to prove the copyright violation was http://www.kunstradio.at/ (and the article was a verbatiom copy off the link provided), not the one you used on my talk-page. Regards. Lectonar 14:47, 15 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Okay, so we're both confused. http://www.kunstradio.at/BIOS/frizbio.html is the source bio. You're saying the text you deleted was THAT text, not the stuff that answers.com grabbed from Wikipedia? This is a page I put online a *long* time ago -- I don't remember when, and the page's history has been deleted too. But the text from answers.com does look like something I might have written.  Any idea where this disconnect is? Shall I just re-create the page using the text that answers.com came from WP in the first place? ◉ ghoti 15:56, 15 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
I looked into it, and still can't explain it. So it would be best to do as you said, as it is not allowed to restore copyvios. Thanks for your understanding, and happy editing. Lectonar 15:23, 16 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image source problem with Image:ACMG generic.gif edit

Image Copyright problem

This is an automated message from a robot. You have recently uploaded Image:ACMG generic.gif. The file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 11:23, 7 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If you believe you received this message in error, please notify the bot's owner. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Fay hut.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Fay hut.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 10:35, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Redirect of Canadian Photovoltaic Industries Association edit

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Canadian Photovoltaic Industries Association, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Canadian Photovoltaic Industries Association is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Canadian Photovoltaic Industries Association, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Fair use rationale for Image:Ploticus logo.png edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Ploticus logo.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:WailinJennys Firecracker.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:WailinJennys Firecracker.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 03:18, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Good Times (magazine) edit

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Good Times (magazine), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Good Times (magazine). Re: Why an {{unreferenced}} on x2x ? edit

Hi! Yes, I used NewPageWatcher (a Wikipedia tool) to add {{unreferenced}} to the x2x page. This is because the page does not cite any reference sources, meaning that none of the content in the page is verifiable. The references should be about the article's content; for example, the line "x2x allows the console (keyboard and mouse) on one X terminal to be used to control another X terminal. It also provides ancilliary functions like clipboard sharing" might need a reference to verify that it's true. Let me know if this doesn't make sense. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 19:57, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi again pmc. Placing an {{unreferenced}} tag on an article does not insist references; it merely places the article in Category:Articles lacking sources, as well as notifies other users that there are no references, in the hopes that some may be added. Unfortunately, the x2x homepage can probably not be considered a reference because it is a primary source. For the most part, Wikipedia's sources come from secondary sources, and that is mainly what the {{unreferenced}} tag is asking for. The articles you pointed out (Lynx, AWK or BusyBox) in fact all do have references (look under the references, books, or notes sections), and therefore, they do not have an {{unreferenced}} tag. Thanks for getting back to me - feel free to do so again, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 21:14, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Chuck edit

reassembled from User talk:JHunterJ#Chuck

Howdy. I was just going over my watchlist and noticed that on April 30th you removed a comment on the Chuck article advising people to follow Wikipedia guidelines for partial title matches on disambiguation pages. Was your removal intentional? What's your position on this sort of thing in disambiguation pages? I'll clean it up again, unless I'm misinterpreting something... I'd appreciate it if you could include your reply on my talk page, to get my attention.  :)  ◉ ghoti 22:25, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, my removal was intentional. Chuck is (now) an anthroponymy article, with a list of people with the (nick)name. The disambiguation page is (now) at Chuck (disambiguation). See also Wikipedia:WikiProject Anthroponymy, which has its own set of guidelines, independent of the disambiguation project. -- JHunterJ (talk) 23:34, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your response. Now that I see the Anthroponymy project I agree with the change. Interesting project. It would seem, then, that that Chuck page should either be redirected to Charles, or should have the list of names remove in its entirety and be marked as a {{stub}}. Do you agree? (For that matter, the list of names on the Charles page should also be removed.)  ◉ ghoti 14:28, 13 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
That'd be up to the consensus at Talk:Chuck, but in general, many anthroponymy list articles include lists of name-holders. -- JHunterJ (talk) 21:50, 17 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
When I brought it up on Talk:Chuck I got no response -- either for or against the idea of upholding WP:D#Lists. I see from a search that there are over 18000 articles with "Chuck" in their title. Do you plan to include them all? If not, which ones should be included?  ◉ ghoti 18:14, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
No, I don't plan to include them all (and articles that start with Chuck would be a better list of possibles). It should include the ones that there is consensus to include, or that any editor adds if there is no consensus to remove them. -- JHunterJ (talk) 20:54, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of X2vnc edit

The article X2vnc has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Does not indicate encyclopedic notability.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Jeandré (talk), 2009-09-09t17:58z 17:58, 9 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
