Infoboxes

I understand your position, and definitely want to work with you on this. However, your suggested guideline is creates bad results. For instance, it would lead to exclusion of two third party candidates who received a substantial percentage of the vote (Perot in '92 and '96, Anderson in '80) despite having an impact on the race. Indeed, Perot in '92 and Anderson in '80 participated in televised debates against major candidates during the Fall election campaign (Anderson against Reagan, Perot against Bush and Clinton). At the same time, it means that candidates who received electoral votes, such as Hospers in '72 and Byrd in '60 despite receiving minimal votes (Hospers) or, really, none at all (Byrd) SHOULD be included.

I suggest instead that Third party/independent candidates should not be included in the infobox unless either (a) they receive a substantial percentage of votes, or otherwise significantly affected the race, or (b) received any electoral votes. I suggest that Nader in '00 had an impact in the race (certainly many believe, rightly or wrongly, that his presence 'threw' the election to Bush. Don't want to debate that issue, but the idea is out there and I think that his candidacy should be recognized.) I also suggest that Perot ('96 and '92) and Anderson ('80) either had an impact on the race, or received a significant portion of the popular vote (in all cases, more than 5%) to merit inclusion.

Of course, there are other candidates that could be discussed, but in essence I think that by not including any candidates that had an impact on the race (and the only case where there were more than 4 I think would be 1860,) a disservice is done to history. Because it's a copyrighted image, you need to fill out this little form here (see below) and put it on the image page or the WikiGods will throw a hissy fit. I'm telling you this because the jerk who tagged the image didn't let you know about it. I just happened to stumble across it. If you don't put the form up by Wednesday, they'll delete the image. I'll bring it up on the image help desk and tell them you weren't notified until five days after the image was tagged.

Defaultsort vs. BD

Hi, Philip.

The Template:BD is rather controversial, see its talkpage. Deletion is suggested. Using the defaultsort template is preferred, as it acts on all catagories, including those that come via templates (like bio-stubs). That's why a parameter is not needed for the template recentdeath.

2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

UK Deputy PM

You seem to be one of the most knowledgeable people on the UK's government, so I think I'll go to you! Nobody has responded on Brown's page on who his deputy is. I've narrowed it to Harriet Harman because of the deputy position in Commons, Alister Darling because (from my point of view) he seems to be the next most powerful minister and Jack Straw because of his new, prestigious positions and how most of us thought he was actually given the Deputy PM and First Secretary of State position. • There is currently no Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom - there's no constitutional requirement for one. Harriet Harman is the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and would become Acting Leader if anything were to happen to Gordon Brown. Sorry to interrupt, but we could not put anyone in the deputy section — as Mr Stevens noted, there are reasons for Harman to be named as such, but equally, as you said, Darling is the Second Lord and Chancellor is without exception the second most powerful minister (even above the DPM when there is one)... It's just too nuanced to be expressed as "deputy is X" DBD 20:48, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Well what if I put her in as deputy ad interim? That is effectively what she is. And if a DPM is ever chosen, would it be appropriate to place them there at all then? Well, I'm not sure what you're saying. As I understood it, someone (you?) a few months ago took the contents of Template:Infobox Military Person and copied the unique parts of it into Template:Infobox Officeholder. That person neglected to include the nickname= field, which is actually rather widely used in military biographies. I don't understand these templates well enough (not do I have admin permissions) to modify the template. Unsourced statement about the Palace of Westminster

I should like to ask you about one element in particular: do you have access to any source supporting that Spencer Perceval was officially pronounced dead at 10 Downing Street? The existing source does not make any mention of this, and if no source can be found the fact in question cannot be added back to the article. Salmond

Because the Banff and Buchan (Scottish Parliament constituency) info was already included in the MSP office part of the infobox see Gordon Brown's page for a similar layout it saves space and stops the infobox from becoming unwieldy thanks Barryob (Contribs) (Talk) 16:40, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

I don't know why the seats carried (number) of third/forth party is in bold while the others are not except the first (leading) party which usually indicates the party that gets plurality or forms the government (e.g. Canadian elections, Bloc Québécois - third party - did not join in the government after that, but its seats carried is in bold -- Conservatives formed a minority government instead) . Election templates

Hi Philip. I've reverted your changes to the templates {{British elections (1707-1800)‎}} and {{British elections}}, largely on the basis that they do not cover the same entity - it was not just a name or area change - the UK is a merger of two separate kingdoms (Ireland and GB), so I don't believe elections just for GB should be in the UK template. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.
