Well, I'm kinda new at this, so if anybody has any gripes, complaints, concerns and (maybe) some compliments, I would like to hear from you.

After a very long abscence, I'm getting back in the swing of things as far as Olympic pages are concerned. (April 2011)

Olympic Sports

Hi, this guy is a known vandal (see Wikipedia:Long term abuse/Roitr), but uses so many IP addresses that it is difficult to block them permanently. I have been trying to be as accomodating as possible with some of the vaguely legitimate edits he makes, but I will continue to delete the obviously incorrect ones. Thanks for the vote of confidence! Roitr again

I've found the quickest way to get his sockpuppets banned - just report him for obvious vandalism at WP:AIV! It's slightly off rules (you are typically required to issue several warnings), but otherwise the powers that be have shown little interest in tracking activity reports at User:Roitr/sockpuppetry.

Provided that you take your time and provide some evidence from edit histories (like I did in [1] [2] [3] [4]), admins will gladly block him with no furhter warning even if there were no prior warnings. They are usually reluctant to bother tagging him with {{indefblock}}, so that is left upon the reporting person. --Dmitry _{(talk •contibs )} 18:52, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Rugby

Hi Perakhantu, thanks for leaving me a message. As far as I know, the last time rugby was even demonstrated at the Olympics was in 1936. Whilst rugby is huge in Australia, I do not remember a 7s event ever taking place. Did a few searches and nothing came up. Translaters are usually dodgy, so I would not rely on that, so unless it can be well sourced, leave it out. Also, I was thinking of nominating rugby union at the Summer Olympics for featured status (it has failed once in the past), so if you have any free time, it would be great to get someone run over it. Most web pages are protected by copyright. That makes plagarism from those pages a copyright violation. While credit could be given, in trying to write a free encyclopedia it doesn't make sense to copy whole sections from copyright sources. --Sue Anne 06:22, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

Sue Anne is correct. Even if a website doesn't explicitly note that the material on it is copyrighted, the material on it is generally still protected by copyright law. It would be wonderful if someone would write good descriptions for the emblems without violating the IOC's copyright, but copying and pasting text from the IOC website is not acceptable for Wikipedia. 2010 World Championships

I am going on the assumption that the FIS will do this given their past history with other events that were not included in the Winter Olympics (Women's 20 km in 1980, Nordic combined 3 x 10 km team event in 1984, and Ski jumping team large hill event.). If past history holds true which I think it does, then it should be held. It would not surprise me if FIS does this. Chris 20:06, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

I see what you mean about the redundancy. The first thing I should tell you about me on Wikipedia is that my template skill isn't that great. I had an idea for using those templates I saw on the Olympic pages, so I wasn't ignoring them at all; but I couldn't use them as I wanted (since I couldn't get them to display medal counts for both summer and winter and links for every year), so I decided to be bold and modify the template as I saw fit. I think the result is what I wanted, and I never had any idea that it might cause concern.

In your message, you mention the pages I created, but you discuss the templates more. I began creating these pages after trying to check Cyprus (my college roommate from last year is from Cyprus) and finding that there was no Cyprus at the Olympics article. Had there been no articles of this sort at all, I wouldn't have done anything, but the existence of Belarus and United States articles (and the prior existence of the NationsinOlympics template, created by SEWilco in June 2005) gave me an idea of consolidating individual games' data into one page for each country. I should also tell you: I'm primarily an article-improving person, taking what's already there and organising it better. Most of my Wikipedia work is either minor grammatical cleanups or categorisation; I simply started this because I saw a matter that could be organised better, as some people create "List of ___" articles.

Now that I've had my say, I ask: what should I do, if anything? Please understand that I'm not unhappy, just surprised that this has caused problems and sorry for so doing. Tell me what to do; I'm willing to do whatever you guys want. I'll just say that I'm not interested in joining the wikiproject, since this was simply another expression of my attempt to organise matters better (as far as improving the content of Wikipedia Olympic coverage, I'd not be doing that), and I'd not be a very helpful member at all. Thanks for letting me know about this.

By the way, don't expect a quick reply to anything else you send me. It's finals week for me at college, and I may or may not have time to answer very often — this message itself was supposed to be posted three hours ago! I'll do my best to reply in a timely manner. Olympic template issues

Regarding the busting up of the Olympic games with the events, most of the templates are the dynamic navigational ones. If you look at the view part of each template, it shows you the name of the template. Doing it that way, you can split the template accordingly. I have already done this for baseball. 2008 Olympic Template

As a leading editor at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Olympics, you should be aware that I think a rash template deletion decision is being made at Wikipedia:Templates_for_deletion/Log/2008_August_18#Template:Nations_at_the_2008_Summer_Olympics. I have attempted to created the sidebar template Template:Nations at the 2008 Summer Olympics to complement Template:NOCin2008SummerOlympics as a navigational aid for some of the larger countries. Although the links are the same it is not redundant because it greatly improves the experience for the reader who wants to quickly visit different countries. When I visit a page like United States at the 2008 Summer Olympics, I often want to jump to another page and I don't think I am the only reader who would like to do so. Currently, the reader has to scroll down for pages and pages in hopes that the proper template is at the bottom. It would help the reader if there were a sidebar navbox like the one I created. It is not uncommon for a sidebar to include only duplicate links of a template at the bottom (See Barack Obama, which has a sidebar template that includes only redundant links).--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 13:21, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
