Hi, Paul! Actually, any editor can revert to previous versions; you don't have to ask anyone to do it for you. To undo your changes, go to the Krasnodar Krai page, click on the "History" tab (located immediately to the right of the "edit this page" tab), which will bring you here. Now, to revert to one of the previous versions, click on that version's datestamp. For example, if you want to revert the article to the version as it was after STDBotD edited it, click on "tt:21, February 26, 2007", which will bring you here. Now click "edit this page", type in an edit summary in the "edit summary box" ("reverting self" or something along those lines should do fine), and click the "Save this page" button. Voilà—all your changes are now reverted.

Language sections in Canadian province articles

The sections you've been adding have a badly-constucted reference in them. When you use the {{cite paper}} template, you need to supply the title of the paper in addition to its URL - in this case:

Canadian Ethnicity info

Hi there.

I'm happy to see someone moving and shaking in the Canadian Ethnicity sections - I spent quite a bit of time on them a while ago - nice when someone cares! I'm just going to poke at one or two things, though, and then maybe we can come to an agreement on them, and go harmonize the articles throughout. My thoughts come from the Demographics of Newfoundland and Labrador article, which I noticed you doing some work in.

1. "Ethnicity" vs. "Ethnic Origin" - I am not a semantic politician, but I think that we should use the term "Ethnic Origin" that Statistics Canada uses when we use their data. I'm not saying that it fully expresses the concept perfectly, but I do think that it is best to be very strict in using their terms - that way we don't get into messy debates about race, culture, etc. (for instance, when I got here, I found a few articles that simply added together Jamaican and African numbers, and called it "Black" - as opposed to just using the "Black" response numbers from the census for that category, and maintaining seperate Jamaican and African categories). Touchy stuff! This is particularly true, because the actual question on the census asks people to list "the ethnic or cultural group(s) to which the respondent's ancestors belong." - the reference to "ancestors" makes me believe that including the word "Origin" is good.

2. I don't think "Canadian" can be expressed by including dual links to "English Canadian" and "Québecois". For one, "Québecois" is a category counted on the census in its own right, separate from "Canadian". Secondly, there are many people who would have listed "Canadian" who are of neither English nor French descent.

3. Acadian - you've listed both Acadian and Acadien. However, as you can see if you follow the links in my previous sentence - those two redirect to the same page. Thus, (and because this is the English Wikipedia) I think we should just list "Acadian".

4. American (USA) - You've linked this to United Empire Loyalists. However, many Americans (60s draft dodgers, as an example, but really anybody) don't fit this description. Thus, I've changed the link to a simple "Demographics of the USA" page, as I did with Canada.

On all of these, I'm happy to be wrong - let me know what you think, and we can work to implement whatever we decide is best.

You have raised some good points. I will address them by your numbering system.

1. There have been major changes in the way this subject is understood in the last few censuses. The 1996 categorisations for exaple, refer much more specifically to quasi-geographic origins and so I prefer the word origins for those figures which have such a geographical bias. By contrast the proliferation of self-identified categories and dual identities in the 2001 census lend themselves more toward a less precise more self-expressionist terminology. The 2001 census in fact frequently uses the term ethnocultural as in 'ethnocultural portrait' for these numbers. I kinda like tht term too. I know the question mentions 'ancestors' but I still think the question is fundamentally understood in terms of personal identification. I know the term 'origins' is ocassionally used in the presentation of the data but I'm not sure it used in the question in either census. I am also kinda waiting for the results of the 2006 census due in April. BUT I do think that it is absolutely imperative tbat we steadfastly adhere to and respect the use of the precise terminologies given for the actual individual self-choices themselves. e.g. 'Jamaican' linmks to 'Jamaican Canadian'; 'African' links to 'Afro-Canadian' and 'Black' links to 'Black people',

2.I have not divided Canadian into Canadian and Quebecois but rather into English-Canadian and Canadien-Francais (French-Canadian). The term 'Quebecois' is handled distinctly elsewhere. I think the Canadian/Canadien concept is a fundamental construct here in 'bilingual' (actually more like dually unilingual) Canada (historically described as having 'two founding races'). Persons who are of neither English nor French ancestry may often list Canadian (+?) but do however almost always identify primarily with the community surrounding just one of the official languages - which would be most clearly established by knowing in which language they filled out the questionnaire although unfortunately Statscan does not give us that information. Nevertheless it is certain that most people in Quebec filled out the questionnaire in French and that is why I put Canadien before Canadian on that page. For both Canadians and Canadiens many do not identify as English or French people, however. One should perhaps also consider the fact that many Canadiens do not feel themselves to be Canadian even if they are (often unwillingly) Canadian subjects (by citisenship but not by nationality which concept has been severely muddied by the Canadian Parliament of late). This whole question is fundamentally intrinsically ambiguous and ambivalent. Citizens in (or of?) Quebec (but notably NOT the 'Quebecois' nor the 'Quebecers') are now officially a distinct people comprising perhaps most but certainly not all French Canadians (Canadiens Francais) and perhaps also not most Canadians of French ancestry. Tricky stuff indeed. It is perhaps better to err on the side of caution which would mean I think the use of more inclusive and also of more particular groupings (which is perhaps a typically Candian contradiction). Unfortunately both English-Canadian and French-Candian are by definition exclusionistic although English-Candian is perhaps less so ideologically it is almost certainly more so numerically (relatively speaking not in absolute numbers of course) but now I am straying into dangerous politically sensitive territory. I am pretty sure however that most or at least many Canadiens do not feel that the term Canadians describes them adequately even in English. I think there is a host of data polled on this topic although its value is also questionable. Sigh!

3. You are right that Acadien and Acadian link to the same page. And they are not different peoples at all. Historically amongst Acadians/Acadiens the linguistic divide was much more blurred. I think a good compromise here would be for me to list Acadian (Acadien) rather than Acadian / Acadien to show that Acadien is really just an alternate English-language spelling for Acadian rather than in any way a quasi-distinct grouping in the way that the Canadians and the Canadien(ne)s are. Incidentally I decided to just use Canadien for 2 rather than the cumbersome French Canadien(ne) or sexist? Canadien (Canadienne) ...

4. You are quite right that UEL is utterly inappropriate in the Newfoundland context and also most probably out West. In the four original provinces of Canada the situation is much more tricky. I think the balance leans toward American demographics in Ontario despite the foundational importance of the UELs there, but in Quebec and the Maritimes the UEL influence appears still to be dominant. Perhaps historical immigration figures might help us here.

It is nice to discuss this with someone who cares. I am sure we will find more questionable sensitive tricky hot potato(e)s. :)
