Advice relating to problems with article writing

At Talk:The Divine Comedy: Heaven, Purgatory and Hell Revisited by Contemporary African Artists you asked "is it possible to point out exactly what in the tone of the article makes it come across as promotional?" I have every sympathy with people such as yourself who come to Wikipedia in good faith, putting some time and effort into creating an article which they believe is suitable, only to be told that it is likely to be deleted. I will offer you a few comments which I hope may be some help to you.

1. I can only guess that you are closely associated with the project which the article was about. A person who is closely involved in a subject will very often find it difficult to stand back from the subject and see how their writing about it will look from the detached perspective of an uninvolved outside observer. That is, in fact, one of the main reasons why Wikipedia's conflict of interest guideline discourages us from writing about subjects in which we have a close personal involvement: even a person who sincerely thinks that he or she is writing in a neutral way about a subject is likely to unknowingly come across as promoting it if they are closely involved. It is difficult to "point out exactly what in the tone of the article makes it come across as promotional", because it was the whole character of the article from start to finish. The very first sentence, "Over fifty upcoming and established artists associated with over twenty African countries and the Diaspora participated in an exploration of themes contained within Dante’s classic of world literature", while perhaps not containing any actual statement that is not a matter of objective fact, is expressed in a way that gives the feeling, as I read it, that the person who wrote it was trying to impress me with how wonderfully broad and inclusive the project is. The "Dates and Venues" section looked as though it was there to enable readers to attend: i.e. to market it. So it was throughout the article.
2. Even if the article had been written in totally non-promotional terms, I am by no means sure that it would have survived long, as it does not look to me as though its subject satisfies Wikipedia's notability standards. Certainly nothing in the article itself showed that it did so, and my searches for suitable sources have failed to produce anything suitable.
3. My advice to new editors is that it is best to start by making small improvements to existing articles, rather than creating new articles. That way any mistakes you make (which you will, because we all do) will be small ones, and you won't have the discouraging experience of repeatedly seeing hours of work deleted. Gradually, you will get to learn how Wikipedia works, and after a while you will know enough about what is acceptable to be able to write whole new articles without fear that they will be deleted. Over the years I have found that editors who start by making small changes to existing articles and work up from there have a far better chance of having a successful time here than those who jump right into creating new articles from the start. I admit to being 'invested' in the project because of what I think it represents....one of (if not 'the') the largest ever exhibition(s) of contemporary African art and artists...which I think meets criteria for notability, but I couldn't find a citation to back up that assertion so I avoided speaking in those terms

1. I was told the same thing (small edits/baby steps) by a pretty experienced wikipedian but *shrug* I thought I'd try...

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Maurice pefura for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.
