Welcome!

Hello Narcoholic! I'm PartTimeGnome, a Wikipedia editor like yourself, and I'd like to say welcome to Wikipedia! I saw your feedback, and thought you'd appreciate some advice on getting started here.

Wikipedia is not just a collection of articles; it's an active community. The real fun here is contributing to Wikipedia. Don't feel hurt if some of your first few edits are removed for not meeting Wikipedia guidelines. Learn from your initial mistakes, and no one will hold them against you.

Some good advice: Be bold in your editing, and use the talk pages to discuss with other editors. Be kind to others, because there's a lot you can learn from them, and there's lots they can help you with.

E-mail: The Wikipedia community prefers discussion to be on talk pages (like this one), so the whole community can see the discussion. If you want a Wikipedia editor to e-mail you for something private or personal, you will need to add your e-mail address to your Wikipedia account in preferences. After doing this, you will get an e-mail asking you to confirm your email address. Click the link in this e-mail to allow other Wikipedians to e-mail you.

If you don't log on to Wikipedia very often, you can have Wikipedia send you an e-mail when anyone leaves a message on your personal talk page (this page), or edits a page you have chosen to watch. The options to enable these are in your preferences, beneath your e-mail address.

What to do? There are many things you can do on Wikipedia. You are not expected to do anything in particular; what you do depends on your interests and skills.

  • Wikipedia:Contributing to Wikipedia lists some of the ways you can contribute.
  • Find a WikiProject that works on something you like, and join it. Most projects will have a list of tasks you can help with. Some WikiProjects help to improve the encyclopedia's coverage of a given topic (e.g. military history), while others help improve a specific thing across the whole encyclopedia (e.g. external links). Many projects have a list of tasks you

More resources: There are lots of resources to help you become a great editor, from our basic introduction to our in-depth manual (which I see you've already found). If you haven't done so, tell us a bit about yourself. If you need some help, visit the Teahouse questions and answers board. Or, you can type {{helpme}} followed by your question on this page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. You can also leave a message on my talk page. Oh, and please sign your name on talk pages by typing ~~~~; our software automatically converts this to your username and the date.

I'm glad you're here, and wish you happy editing! – PartTimeGnome (talk | contribs) 16:56, 29 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
